rllhis novel coin slot guard designated generallyl by 60 comprises a sheet metal support `61 conformed to the cylindrical wall 2 of the casing and secured by foot lugs 62 to the bottom 8 of the casing and arranged just within `the slot 18. The end portions 68 of the support 61 are wide enough to contact with the bottom plate 8 and rise to the underside of the rotatablemember and thereby constitute a support therefor' if euch is desired. The middle portion of the support 61 is cut away forming a slot 6414 arranged opposite to and in registry with the slot 18 and thru which the coins can enter past the support 60 to the box. The upper and lower bars 65 and 66 forming the upper and lower edges of the slot 64 are bent or formedinwardly at their adjacent edges 67 as shown in liligure 14: so that these two bars are iuclined inwardly at an angle of substantially 800 to the outer wall of the box. The slot 64 is wider than the thickest coin which the box is adapted to receive and l provide a yieldable guard carried by the support 61 adapted to yield to permit the insertion of the coins andto automatically prevent the ejection or removal of the coins thru the coin slot. For this purpose l provide two spring members 67 secured to the support 61 and carried thereby. rlhese members. are each made of flat spring sheet metal as best illustrated in ligure 12 and each is prow vided with two longitudinal arms 68 at one end and with a slot 69 at the other end.
Each end of the support 61 is provided with a tongue 70 which is adapted to be received in the slot 69 of one of the spring members to secure them to the support as best shown in Figures l() and 11. The arms 68 are adapted to lie cio-incident with bars 65 and 66 and 'their free ends 71 are arranged adj athese bars are slightly narrower at their middle portions than at their ends to provide space between the lower bar and the bottom of the box and between the upper bar and the underside of the rotatable member to receive portions of the spring forming` hooks for retaining the springs in pon sition, For the purpose of providing the projections which guard the coin slot l provide a lateral prong 72 extending inwardly from the free end of each arm 68 which are adaptedto be turned inwardly or away from the shell of the boi; thus providing a tapered opening between them for the entrance of the coin. As the coin is entered thru the slot 18 against the prongs 72 the spring arms 68 are forced inwardly into inclined posi tions as shown by dotted line in Figure 14 spreading the prongs 72 apart and permitT ting the coin to enter freely into the coin box.` To prevent the coin distorting the springs and carrying them thru the opening in the support 61 l provide outwardly extending projections .78 on the free ends of the arms 68 adapted'to be formed into hooks for engaging the upper and lower edges of the bars 65 and 66 respectively. As best shown iu lltigure 14 it will be seen that if a coin is projected against `the inner ends of the projections 72 from within the box it vwill press directly against the said ends and press the spring arms 68 outwardly against the wall 4of the box and as they cannot yield any farther the opening between them cannot be made large enough to permit the escape of a coin. The hoolrs 78 are `freely movable around the outer edges of the bars 65 and 66and the springs arefree to respond to the pressure "of the coin to permit the coin to enter the box but cannot be distorted too `much as they 'are pressed against the bars 65 and 66.
Preferably for making the projections 72 at the inner ends of the arms `68 long enough to form suitable curved guards for the coin slot l maire the member 6T in the fiat form shown in ,Figure 12 the arms 68 being outwardly inclined relatively A to each other spreading their outer ends apart so that by severing the bar connecting their outer ends l. provide prongs of sufficient length. ln Figure 13 l have shown a modied manner of producing prongs of sufficient length without the necessity of outwardly inclining the arms in their process of manufacture. ln this form the two prongs 72 on the members 6i are offset from each other so as to enable me to malte each prong the full length from arm to arin thus avoiding the necessityY of forming the member 67' after the production of the arm to bring the arms 68 parallel with each other and reducing the width of metal necessary from which to produce the spring members.` It will be understood that after the member 67 has 'whether stationary n not be freed from.

In Figure 22 I have shown a modified form of locking device. In this form I provide a, stationary U-shaped guard ring 75 having an outer flange 7 6 turned up at its edge and an inner flange 77. The outer liange 7G is adapted to contact with the body flange 4 adjacent to the outer wall 2 of the box and the inner flange 7 T to contact with the cover 5 just within the cover lugs 7 and thus forni a solid and rigid guard for the locking member providing a suitable liatringlike channel 7S in which the locking member freely rotates. In this form the inner locking ring 79 which takes the place of the guard ring in the first form is provided at its outer edge with an upturned flange 80 adapted to contact with a fiat tumbler or locking ring Sl at its outer edge the two rings 79 and 81 being spaced apartfor receiving the locking lugs 7 between them and these rings being formed similar to the rings already described for interloelment with the cover lug and provided with suitable notches for registering with the notches in the flange t for receiving and releasing the cover lugs. In this formv the stationary guard ring 75 is provided with a suitable opening 82 in proper relation to the coin slot 18 for receiving the key projection 47 for releasing the cover lug from the spring 35 in theimanner already described. Preferably I interlock the ring 79 with the ring 8l by means of interlocking lugs 83 and Sl similar to the interlocking lugs 3l and 82 already described in relation to the rings 26 and 2l.
The stationary guard ring 75 is forced into position and is formed to fit so tightly within the wall 2 of the boX that it requires no other fastenings and I can dispense with the legs 59.
It will now be seen that the guard ring or rotatable protects the locking ring against the pressure of the contents of the container and the contents of the'container are protected by the guard ring from the cover lugs.
It will now be understood that I have provided a very simple means of locking` thc cover upon a box leaving the cover rot-at able and simulating` a. permutation or combination lock in that the cover can rotate to any extent in either direction when interlocled with the rotatable member and canthe box until unlocked bv means of the key and furthermore that the construction is simple and provides a box in which no protuberances are movable in contact with the coins as such protuberances tend to bunch the coins or wear upon them and are particularl;Y objectionable when tho boX .is used for the storage olf jewelry or such like delicate eziilicnsive articles.
