a citizen of the United States, residing at Waukegan, county of Lake, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Display Cartons, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to produce a simple and novel cart-on construction which will permit the carton to be used as a container for shipping goods and also as a display case adapted to display the goods in an attractive way when placed on sale. One of the requisites of a carton intended to serve as a display case is that it has the capacity of being self-supporting in an inclined position instead of simply lying flat on a counter or table and, therefore, viewed in one of its aspects, my invention may be said to have for its object to produce a simple and novel carton construction which will permit the carton to be position. g

It may at times be desirable to permit the closing of a carton while it is occupying a display position, without disturbing it or moving the same. Viewed in another of its aspects, one of the objects of the present invention may be said to be the provision of a simple attachment for supporting a carton in an inclined position independently of the cover or lid, so that the carton may be closed or opened, at will, while supported in a display position.

Another desirable characteristic of a car-. ton adapted to serve as a display case is the capacity to associate with the goods adverti sing matter shown in an attractive manner. A further object of the present invention is to produce a simple and novel carton conplaced in an inclined struction in which the lid may be made to serve as an attractive display card firmly supported at a convenient angle so as not apt to become accidentally displaced even when moving the carton from one location to another.

- The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of .my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the closed carton, a fragment of the side being broken away at one corner.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a carton the top of which is closed by a lid, B, hinged at one end to one end of the carton and having a flange, C, at its free end adapt-ed to be bent down into the carton adjacent to one of the end walls in any usual or suitable manner. The flange, is provided at about the middle thereof with a tongue, D, cut out of the same, this tongue being adapted to be inserted through aslot, E, in the rear wall, F, of the carton, when the lid or cover is folded back upon itself approximately midway between its ends and is then swung into an upright position as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3; the tongue being so positioned that it projects upwardly when the parts are in the positions shown in Figs. 1 to 3, so-that it may be inserted into the slot, E, from below. Consequently, if the carton is grasped in such a way as to tend to swing the cover or lid forward or lift the same when it is in dis play position its free end will not become disengaged but will be tightly held. If desired, there may be two parallel slots in the rear wall of the carton instead of the single slot, E, a second slot, G, being shown. This arrangement permits the tongue to extend through both slots as shown- When the lid is brought into a display position it is bent back upon itself along the dotted line indicated at H in Fig. 5. If it be desired to give an ornamental appearance to the upper edge of the display card thus produced, the lid or Fig. 215 a vertical longitudinal section I wings or feet, M, lie flat against the sides cover may be cut through to form an suitable design such as indicated at I in ig. 5, the design remaining attached to the lid at its base which forms a continuation of the dotted line H. That part of the lid which forms the display surface, including the part I, may contain any desired printed matter and be decorated in any desired way.

The second feature of my invention has to do with the means for supporting the carton in an inclined position. For this purpose I hinge at one end of the bottom, K, a suitable supporting piece so constructed that when the carton is closed it'may be swung upwardly past and embrace one end of the same, taking up very little room. The support may conveniently consist of a section, L, forming a continuation of the bottom wall of the carton having at the ends pieces or feet,'M, extending at right angles thereto. When the-support is not in use and the carton is closed, the part L swings up against one end of the carton while the lfmake the support as a whole rigid, I prefer to provide and form a connecting piece between the wings or feet with an extension,

N, at the free end thereof which may be bent at right angles thereto. Where this is done the member L must be of the same width as the depth of the carton so that the part N can rise above the top of the carton and rest thereon when the support is swung into its inoperative position. In the arrangement shown, the support is located at the same end as that at which the display card is placed, namely at the end at which the lid is hingedflout it will of course be understood that the support may be located at either end. i

It will of course be understood that my improved carton may be built up in a variety of ways. It will often be found convenient, however, to form the entire structure out of a single blank and I have therefore illustrated a blank suitable forthis purpose; this blank being shown in Fig. 4.

In Fig. 4 I have used the same reference letters as in the remaining figures to indicate corresponding parts and have used numerals to indicate the other parts. Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the blank comprises a long central strip having various extensions and flaps at the sides. At one extreme end of the strip isa section constituting the flap, C, with its tongue, D. The next section is the lid, B, and beyond the lid section is the outermost end section, F, provided with the slots E and G.- Beyond the section F isa section, 1, forming the inner bottom of the carton; then in order come two end sections, 2 and 3, which overthe next 'sectionis the outer bottom wall, K, beyond which is the section, L, forming part of the support; beyond the section L are the section N and a similar section, 4, which is adapted to be folded inwardly upon the section N so as to form a double thickness of material. If desired, there may be be yond the section 4 a narrow section, 5, which, in the completed structure, is adapted to be folded at right angles of the overlying members N and 4 and be inserted beneath a tongue, 6, cut out of the part L. As best shown inFigs. 2 and 3, the part L may be reinforced by means of a stiffening piece, 7,

6. The parts of the blank just described form the central strip or panel. At each end ofthe section F is a wing, 8, of the same width as the section F and slightly shorter than the latter, these wings being adapted to. be folded into the carton and lie agalnst the inner side of the wall F. On each side of the bottom section K are sections, 9 and 10, respectively adapted to form the sides of the carton; the sections 9 and 10 being of the same size and shape and being adapted to be folded so as to lie against each other and thus form double Walls at each of the two sides of the' carton.

The sections 9 are provided with wings, 11, similar to the wings 8 but disposed at right angles to the wings 8-and being directed toward the latter in the blank. The wings 11 are severed along their inner edges from the body of the blank. The sections 10 are provided with wings, 12, similar to the wings Sand 11, disposed in the same way as the wings 11, but projecting from the ends of the sections '10 opposite those from which the wings 11 extend. At each end of the section L is one of the wing sections, M. Each of the sections M is provided with a wing, 14, extending therefrom past the sections N and 4 but severed from the latter; the wings 14 being bent inwardly at right angles to the members M and being brought between the sections N and 4 so that when the narrow section, 5, is slipped under the tongue, 6, the parts of the support will be held firmly together in a box-like state.

While I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A- carton having a bottom wall, said wall having an integral extension projecting beyond one end of the carton and adapttension having wings or feet projecting approximately at right angles therefrom in position to serve as a support for the carton when said extension is swung underneath the carton and to lie against the walls of the carton adjacent to said end when said extension is swung upwardly against said end.

2. A carton having a bottom wall, said wall being provided with an integral extension projecting beyond one end of the carton and adapted to be folded downwardly underneath said bottom wall or upwardly against said end, said extension having connected flanges extending respectively along the free edge and along the sides transversely of the plane of said extension in a position to serve as feet for supporting the-carton when the extension is swung underneath the carton and to lie flatagainst the sides and top of the carton when the extension is swung upwardly.

A carton comprising side, end and bottom walls made out of a single blank properly shaped and folded; the bottom wall being continued at one end beyond the end of the carton and being folded into a boxlike structure hinged -at one corner to the carton and adapted to be swung underneath the carton to form a support therefor or upwardly against the end of the carton, said box-like structure being open on the sides which are. the bottom side and the outermost side .When in the box-supporting position, whereby said box-like struoture is caused to embrace the end of the carton when swung upwardly.

4. A carton having a lid hinged at 'one end and adapted to be folded upon itself along a transverse line between its ends, said lid having near the free end a tongue partially cut from the same, and the end wall of the carton at the hinged end of the lid being provided with a slot adapted to receive said tongue when the lid is swung back in a folded condition so as to hold the lid in a more or less upright display position.

A carton having a bottom wall. said wall having an extension at one end thereof adapted to be swung underneath the carton so as to lie against the under side thereof or upwardly in contact with the end wall of the carton about an axis coinciding with the lower edge of the carton at said end, said extension having at the sides and at the free end wings projecting substantially at right angles therefrom to form feet for supporting the carton when said extension is swung underneath the latter.

6. A carton made up of a single blank shaped and folded so as to produce a body portion comprising stationary bottom. end

and side walls and a lid hinged at one end to the top of one of said side walls, together with an extension from the bottom wall adapted to be swung from a position in which it lies against the exterior of the last mentioned end wall into \aposition in which it lies against the under side of the bottom,

said extension having along the side edges and along the edge at the free end thereof flanges projecting substantially at right angles to the plane of said extension.
