" ro'nnrne DISPLAY Box.
Application filed February 27, 1922. Serial No. 539,376.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY C. DURICK and JoHN T. BIRD, citizens of the United States, said Durick residing at Worcester,
in, the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, said Bird residing at Boston,
county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented ing Display Box, isa specification.
This invention relates to a folding' box or carton, adapted to form an attractive container for the display of fruit, candy or other articles.
It isthe general object of our invention to provide a display box which may be easily and cheaply manufactured from material having afinished surface on one side. only, and which may be formed substantially or entirely from a single, sheet of material.
Another object of ourinvention is to pro vide a box of this character which, when folded, will'present a finished surface both on the inside and on the outside of the ar- 26' ticle.
Our invention further relates to the provision of a display card associated with the boxtogetherwith suitable provision for supporting-the card. A further feature consists in providing a. supportor easel as a part of-thebox and byuse of which th'econtentsmay be more advantageously positioned. I
Ourinvention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims Two forms of our invention are" shown in the: drawings in which-.- I I Fig. 1.isa plan view. of the unfinished side of the blank befolded;

Fig. 12 is a detailplan' view of the; easel locking device, looking in the directionof the arrow 12 in Fig. 10.
Referring to the form of our invention shown in Figs. 1 .to 5, theblank for'this box or carton is preferably formed from a single piece of materialwhich requires only one finished surface. The plan view of this blank shown in Fig 1 discloses the unfinished side thereof. I
This blank comprises an outer bottom portion 20 having a U-shaped slit 21 near the centerthereof'. Lateral extensions ofthe bottom 20 form outer sides 22 and23 and inner sides 24 and 25; The outer sides 22 and 23 are provided with looking flaps 26 and 28. v
An extension 29 from the end of the inner side 24 forms the inner upper end of part 29 is adapted for use as a upon which suitable advertising mattefror decorative printing may be placed.
The outer side 28 is provided with anextension comprising an outer upper end 31, an end flap 32, alower edge flap 33' and a flap 34 adapted for use as a brace for the display card 30. I
The portion of the flank extending from the lower edge of the outerbottom 20comprisesan outer lower end' 35-,"an inner-lower end 36', and an inner bottom portion 37. The length ofthe'portion' 37 maybe such as to constitute the entire inner bottom or'a portion only thereof; asnc'ay be advisable under specific conditions. i
A narrow extension fr'om the upper edge of the outer bottom formsan easelor support 38 and aneas'elbrace 3'9. Theflsever'al parts; of, the blank aresep'arat'ed' by scored lines as indicated in the drawing to'fa'cilitate the folding ofthe box,
When the blank above d'scifibe'diis folded.
it provides a box having the sides and ends of double thickness and displaying a finished surface bot-h on the inside and on the outside of the box. The bottom of the box is also of double thickness throughout a greater or less portion of its length. The display card 30 projects upwardly from the top edge of the box and is sustained in this position by the flap or brace 34 on the outer upper end portion 31.
In folding the box, the sides are first folded perpendicular to the bottom and the inner sides may then be folded within the outer sides. The lower end portion is then folded around the locking flaps 26 and 28 of the sides, holding the sides in their folded position as indicated in Fig. 2 in which figure, however, the inner side 24 is shown raised to indicate its direction of movement.
The inner upper end 29 is then folded to the position shown in Fig. 3, after which the outer end 31 is brought into position and its flaps 32 and 33 are inserted to lock the parts together. The easel 38 and its brace 39 are positionedas shown in Fig. 5 to support the box at a convenient angle for displaying its contents. 7
While we have described a convenient method of folding the box, it will be obvious that the exact order of the steps may be considerably varied without inconvenience.
The form of our improved box shown in Figs. 6 to 12 is in general substantially similar to the form previously described.
The blank comprises an outer bottom 40,
outer sides 41 and '42, inner sides 43 and 44, v
locking flaps 45 and 46, an inner upper end 47, an outer upper end 48, outer and inner lower ends 49 and 50 and an inner bot-tom 51, all as in the previous form.
End flaps 52 and 53 are formed on the upper ends 47 and 48 respectively and the end 48 is provided with the usual lower edge flap 54. A small projection or tab 55 is also formed on the inner side 44 for a purpose to be described.
The display: card and the provision for supporting the same is somewhat different in this form of our invention. An extension from the upper edge of the upper inner end 47 is separated by a substantially U-shaped slit 56 to form a display card 57 and a card brace 58 having an end fiap-59.
The easel in this form of our invention is formed of a separate piece of material secured to the outer bottom 40 and comprising an easel or support 60, an easel brace 61 and a securing device comprising a cen ter strip 62 and side strips 63, the center strip having a V-shaped slit therein forming a tongue 64 adapted to extend through a slit 65 in the outer bottom 40.
The procedure of folding this second form of box is substantially the same as in the first form, the tab 55 serving to prevent inward displacement of the side 44. The display brace 58 is bent downward as indicated in Fig. 10 and its flap is inserted above the outer bottom 40, thus holding the display card in its desired position. The easel is folded as indicated in F 10 and the tongue 64 is inserted through the slit 65 to hold the easel in position.
Having thus described two forms of our invention, it Will be evident that the boxes herein shown are of simple construction, and, when folded, provide receptacles which are attractive in appearance and which are particularly well adapted for the display of articles of sale, such as fruit or confectionery, and particularly in retail stores.
Having thus described our invention, it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein. within the spirit and scope of our invention as set forth in the claims, and we do not wish to be other- Wise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what we claim is 1.
