LEO 'IAFFE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR BUFFER.
Application filed March 17, 1921. Serial No. 453,117.
To all whom itrmoy concern:
Be it known that I, LEO TAFFE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Door Buffer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a buffer and especially one which is capable of being used with automobile doors and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a device of this nature which will be of extremely simple, durable and inexpensive construction. one which is eflicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a casing for two oppositely opposed engaging members which may be formed from a blank stamped from a single sheet of material such as sheet iron.
lVith these and numerous other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction. and the combina tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken through the door and door jamb showing my invention attached thereto,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the socket element of my invention,
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the projecting element of my invention,
-Figure 5 is a longitudinal section taken through the socket element,
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken through the socket element, and
Figure 7 is a plan view showing a blank from which is formed the casing used in connection with the socket element.
Referring to the drawing in detail itwill be seen that 1 designates a door of any preferred construction and 2 adoor jamb. The projecting element 3 is m unted on the edge of the door 1 and comprises a plate 4 having a plurality of openings therein for receiving the screws 5. Intermediate the ends of the plate 4 there is provided a projection 6 which extends transversely across the plate 4 and, has one end thereof rounded as is shown at 7. This plate 4 will preferably be set into the door as shown in Figure 1 and 10 and 11 and the transverse side walls 1'2.
The longitudinal side wall 11 is provided with a flange 13 havingopenings 14 therein for receivin screws so that this flange may be securely attached to the door as more clearly shown in Figure 2. A strip 15 is cut transversely from the body 9 and longitudinal side wall 11 intermediate their ends and cars 16 are out along the transverse edges of the opening which is formed in the longitudinal side wall 11 by the removal of the strip 15. The side walls 10, 11, and 12 are bent along the dotted line shown. in Figure 7, so as to extend at right angles to the body 9. The flange 13 is then bent so as' to extend at right angles to the side wall 11 and parallel with the body 9 but so as to be disposed in an opposite direction. The strip 15 is then bent so as to extend parallel with the side wall 10. When the casing is thus far formed the elements which will be later described are inserted in the casing and the strip '15 will be bent along the dotted line 17 so that its remaining portion will extend over and parallel with the buffer. The ears 16 are then bent inwardly in the casing as is shown in Figure 5 of the drawing.
From the above description of the formation of the casing it will be seen that two oppositely disposed compartments are formed with a recess 18 therebetween as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. Within the compartment thus formed in the casing the elastic blocks 19 are situated which are preferably formed and provided with projections 20 which extend a relatively small distance into the recess 18. A slidable member 21 is disposed in each compartment and encases the projection 20 of the block 19 and is also provided with retaining lips 22 which engage the strip 17 that is that portion thereof whichextends parallel with the longitudinal side wall 10. The other retaining lip 22 will engage the ears 16 and thus it will be seen that these slidable menr bers may be pushed into the compartment so as not to project into the recesses but as soon as they are released the elastic block 19 will force them to project into the recess 18. The openings 24 are provided in the body 9 of the casing for receiving the screws 25 and thus it will be seen that the socket element is securedly held on the door jamb by means of the screws 25 and the screws 26 which pass through the openings 14: in the flange 13.
By referring to Figure 1 of the drawing the operation of the device will be quite evident. It will be seen that the projection 6 on the projecting element passes into the recess 18 in the socket element and the slid able members 21 will engage this. projection 6 and frictionally engage same thus preventing slamming of the door 1 and at the same time, when closed, preventing accidental opening of same. It will also be seen that the device may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost since the casing of the socket element may be formed of a sheet of material and that the various portions thereof may be easily assembled or disassembled when desired. It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily understood without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. In a buffer for use at the free edge of a door or the like, the combination of two slidably mounted oppositely disposed members, elastic means sustaining said members, means cooperating with said members and adapted to yieldingly engage the same and be held therebetween, and a casing for the members formed from a single sheet of material, saidcasing comprising a rectangular body portion, a side wall on each edge of the body portion, a stri formed from the body portion and one si e wall all in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. A casing for a device of the class described formed from a single sheet of material so as to provide a body portion, side walls formed on each edge of the body portion, a strip formed from the body portion and one side wall, said side walls adapted to be bent at right angles to the body portion and in the same direction with each other, said strip adapted to be bent so as to extend contiguous with one side wall and then bent so as to extend parallel with the body portion, and ears extending at right angles from the edges in the other opposite side wall from the last mentioned side wall so asto be in alignment with the sides of said strip.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
