STATES HUGO HENRY SUMMER, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
SANITARY PAD FOR WATER-CLOSET SEATS.
Application filed February 26, 1921. Serial No. 448,078.
To all whom rit may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO H. SUMMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Madison, in the count-y of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Im rovemeilt in Sanitary ads for VVater-(lloset Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in sanitary pads for water closet seats and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object: of my invention is to provide 'a pad that is adapted for adjustment to a water closet seat to 'conformably cover the same to prevent contact of any portion of the seat with a user.
A further object of my invent-ion is to provide a device of the type described that can be folded to fit'within and be ejected from the vending device described and illustrated in my concurrent application for Letters Patent on device for vending toilet seat pads.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is made of a relatively inexpensive material, such as tissue paper, so that each pad can be readily disposed of when used.
A further object of my invention is to provide a water closet seat pad, such as described above, and a suitable means adapted to engage with a toilet seat to removably clamp the pad in adjusted position on the seat. I
Other objects and advantages will appear 7 in the following specification, and the novel features of-the invention will be particularly pointed out-in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the ac-- companying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a'plan view of the pad, Figure 2 is a sectional view through a water closet bowl, showing the use and application of the device.
Figure 3 is a section along the line 3-3 2 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a fiat sheet -1, of suitable material, such as a soft paper. This sheet conforms substantially in outline with a Water closet seat and is provided with a substantially U-shaped.
lapping.
slit 2 therethrough concentric with the outer edge of the sheet 1. The ends of the slit 2 are radially directed 'at 3 and 4 respectively. A plurality of slits 5 extend radially from the slit 2 and terminate a spaced distance from the outer edge of the sheet 1.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The
sheet 1 is placed in position on a water closet seat 6 and a central flap 8 that is outlined by the slit 2 is then bent downwardly at 3 and '4 to depend within the bowl ,7 ,at the forward end of the seat. 'lapering flaps that are defined by the slits 5 are bent downwardly over the inner edge of the seat 6 and will depend within the bowl 7, the adjacent edges of the flaps over- The portions of the sheet 1 extending from the outer ends of the slits 5 to the outer edge of the sheet 1 will conformably fit the upper surface'of the'seat 6, as clearly shown in the drawin It will thus be seen that no portlon of the bodyof the user can contact with the seat 6 or with the bowl 7. I prefer to make the pad of a soft absorbent paper, such as US$116 paper, that can be compressed into small 12. A clamping plate 13 is formed withdepending lugs 14 that are positioned atopposite .endsthereof intermediate the width of the plate and in position to engage w1t h the lugs 12 when the clamping plate 13 1s placed upon the base plate 10, as clearly shown in Figure 4. A pin 15 is pro ected through the lugs 12 and 14 and a spring 16 is disposed on the pin between the lugs 14,
thereby tending to maintain the latter in frictional contact with the lugs 12. The spring 16 has its ends extending laterally of the pin 15 to press upwardly against the under surface of a side portion of the clamping plate 13 and thus force the opposite side portion of the clamping' plate downwardly.
Referring to Figure .3, it will be noted that i prefer .to provide two of the: means ust described for clamping the pad to the seat and that I dispose the same in diametrically opposed positions. The tension ofthe spring 16 forces the inner portion of the clamping plate 13 downwardly and the portion of the sheet 1 arranged between the clamping plate 13 and the seat 6 is therefore clamped to the latter. When it is desired to remove the pad from its adjusted position, the clamping plate 13 is rocked by pressing downwardly on the outer portion thereof.
llhe pad can be folded to fit within a vending device and is desi ed for use with my improved vending device that has been made the subject of my concurrent application for Letters Patent. In preparing the pad for use in the vending machines, the side portions thereof are folded forwardly upon the body thereof along parallel lines tangent with the ends of the slits 5. The forward end portion of the pad is then folded backwardly along a line intersecting the flap 8 at its approximate middle point and the rearward end of the pad is folded backwardly along a line midway'between the outer end of the adjacent slits 5 and the rear edge of I MAY"? 9 are thus thesheet 1. The end portions of the flaps protected.
I claim: 1. The combination with a water closet seat, of a pad of soft absorbent material adapted to conform in outline and to cover the upper surface of said seat, and a pluv rality of spring actuated clasps disposed on said seat, said clasps having jaws adapted to openand receive an edge of said pad at -will for removably holding said pad in adjusted position.
2. The combination with a water closet
