`The primary objectof the invention is to provide an in'iproved device of the class described, which may be conveniently attached to a box orcaseto jserve yas a temporary fastening meanathere bein-g means, provided whereby the lid or `cover can be conveniently .latched to 'the front wall thereof in such a manner that a seal may beprovi'ded for sealing 'the box or case during transportation..
It is also the purpose of my'inv'ention to provide al cover, the hinges and fastening device being so co-related that the hinges and fastening device willact as spacing members 'to maintain the front and back of the box in proper 'alignment and hold them rigid with respect to the remainder of fthe box, there being meansprovided whereby pressure from the outside against either the front or the rear of the boxwill beresisted by the hinges fand the fastening devicesothat any tendency' for'tlierfront and back of the boxto collapse 'inwardly will be eliminated, this being an'iniportant feature in knoclndown bofxesor'crates. v

The box or case' to which my invention is 60 applied l.isshown as consistingot a front wall meinberl, a rearwalljmember ends Band 4, abottorn V5, and a hinged coverior top AG. The members l, n2.3Manfd e are'securedY to the bottoni by longitudinal tie rods 7 and `transverse tie rods 8 which removably connect the'front and back portions lv and 2 andthe end members 3.and 4, the bottom being secured to the end members through the under-cut joints 9 and 1 0. The knock-down feature of the case ory box, however, constitutes no part of the present invention, the fastening device being applicable for use on .any type of case or box.
I have shown the hinged member 6 providedwith straps l1 and l2, which extend beyond the rear edge, of the cover 6I and are bent back upon themselveswto provide bear ings 13 tov receivethe cross bars 11i yof the U-shaped wires l5. The ends of the U- shaped wiresextend through openings 14 in the barrels 1b' and 17 of the hinge plates 18, which are U-shaped in cross section and which are provided .with depending plates 19 so that the major portion or' theplate 18 may lie against the outside of the member 2 and the inner plate '19 may lie against the inner Jface of the back 2, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and l."
The plate 18 isalso secured to the back 2 through the medium of an L-shaped bolt 20, the head 21 of which may lie against the plate ,18 and the 'shank 22er which extends at right angles thereto and projects into a sleeve nut in the endv of the box so that thefsleeve nut may` be` screwed thereinto to additionally,brace the parts. y
The strapsvliand l2 are preferably riveted to the top 6 by the rivets 24 Vand 25, which extend lthrough them and through the straps 26 on the under face of theA cover 6, the straps 2G having depending ends 27 to lie against the platesl9 whenthe lid or cover 6, is in closed position', as clearlyseen in Fig. 2. 1 i Y The cover 6 at its front end is provided with a slot 27, covered by a top plate 28 of a hasp, the top plate 28 being fastened to a lower plate 29 which bears against the under face of the cover 6. The top and bot- Q las tom plates of the hasp may be riveted to the cover by suitable rivet-s or other tasten ing devices. Y
The bottom plate 29 has a depending liange 30, from which and the major por tion of the plate 29 is a struck-up portion or lug 31, which is provided with a shoulder 32 on which the plate 28 rests. The tongue 33, extending from the shoulder, passes through an opening in the cover plate 28 and can, if desired, be peened over so that the two plates will be secured together' at this point.
The plate 29, near its rear end, is provided with a struck-up portion 34, having a shoulder upon which the rear portion of the plate 28 rests. The extended tongue 36 oi less width than the portion 34, projects through an opening 37 in the plate 28 and constitutes a finger-engaging portion to assist in providing a grip to withdraw the spring-pressed bolt 38 slidably mounted in the portions 31 and 34. The ends 39 and 40 of the bolt are connected by an upstanding operi-looped portion 41, ywhich projects through a. slot 42 in the top plate 28 of the hasp, and between the loop 41 and the upstanding portion 34 of the plate 29 is a coil spring 43, forward so that the end 40 will engage the opening 44 in the upstanding tongue 45 oit the keeper 46. The keeper 46 consists of a sheet bent so that it will be U-shaped in cross section, theplates 47 and 48 bearing against the inner face and outer face respectively of the front panel 1 of the box or case.
The upstanding tongue has a projectiiig` end 49,v which is adapted to lie parallel with the upstanding tongue 50 on the cover plate 28 so that when the lid is in closed position,vthe opening 51 in the end 49 will align with the opening 52 in the tongue 50 so that a wire or iiexible member 53 may pass through said opening and be connected by a seal 54.
The top plates 28 and 29 of the hasp, with their connecting tongue and projections be struck from sheet metal, the front end of the plate 28 having a downwardly pro 'jecting end ange or extension 55, which overlaps the forward face ofthe box and will lie parallel with the depending fla-nge 30. The tlanges 30'and 55 are. so disposed -5 that they will receive the top edge of the front lof the box' or crate between them, adding rigidity to the box when the lid is closed. The flange 55 will resist any outward bulging of the front member 1 and the flange 30 will resist inward pressure so that which tends to" force the bolt` ete-se the member 1' will be held in place. strap 24 with its connections to the hinged plate 18, will resist outward movement of the rear walls of the boX while the flange 27 will resist pressure lfrom the outside against the rear wall of the box to hold it in place so it will be apparent that the hinged members and the fastening device will serve as.
additional braces for the box and assist the rods 7 and 8 in. maintaining the case in its assembled position.
`What I claim and desire to secure by Let.- ters-Patent is:
l.' A hasp consisting of twospaced plates. out-struck portions on one plate connected to the other plate, one of the out-struck portions eXtending beyond the other plate to provide a finger-engaging projection, and a longitudinally movable bolt between the plates and having an intermediate portion extending through a slot in the otherplate and in line with the linger-engaging portion.
2. A hasp comprising two parallel plates having` their front ends in parallel planes at right angles to the main portions thereof, to engage over the edge of a wall of a case, and a longitudinally slidable bolt mounted between the two plates vand across the space between the two l'ront ends.
3. A. hasp comprising a bolt holding means, a sliding bolt carried thereby, a keeper for engagement with the bolt, and mating tongues on the hasp and keeper having sealing-wire-receiving openings to align when the bolt engages the keeper.
4. A. hasp comprising two spaced plates, spacers struck up from one plate and engaging the other, and a spring-pressed bolt mounted in the spacers.`
5. A hasp comprising two spaced plates having spaced end portions at rightangles to the main portions, spacers struck up from the main portion of one plate and engaging the other plate, and a longitudinally slidable bolt mounted in the spacers and movable across the space between the end portions.
6. A. hasp consisting of two spaced plates. longitudinally movable bolt mounted be tween the plates. upstanding tingerengaging projection on the top plate, and a projecting portion on the bolt extending above the top plate and in line with the `linger-engaging portion whereby the bolt and the finger-engaging portion may be grasped by one hand of an operator to draw back the bolt.
