WAGON-BOX.
Application led January 13, 1914.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR I. HEADLEY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Modale, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented a new and. useful lagon-BOX, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wagon boxes or bodies and has for its object to generally improve structures of this character.
One of the objects of the invention is to l provide a novel removable end gate.
A further object is to provide a novel door for one of the end gates, and also to provide novel locking means therefor.
This invention is embodied in the novel arrangement andY construction of parts as hereinafter described and as pointed out in the appended claim, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and wherein Figure 1 is an end view of a wagon box embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the end of the wagon box. F ig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale taken through one latch mechanism for locking the door.
Referring specioally to the drawings, the wagon boX comprises the bottom 11, sides 12, extension sides 13 seatable on the sides 12 and the rear end gate 19a. The eXtension sides are removable and have depending members 14 to straddle the sides 12. Plates 15 are secured to the outer face of each side 12 adjacent the ends thereof by means of the rivets 17. The end gate 19a rests against rear ends of the sides 12, and has angular side flanges 41 flush with and turned away from the sides 12. rlhe plates 15 project beyond the ends of the sides 12 and have their projecting portions hooked or refleXed inwardly as designated at 22 to snugly receive the flanges 41. rThe end gate 19a preferably comprises a plate of sheet metal having the ends thereof bent outwardly to form the flanges 41 which slidably lit into the corresponding hooked portions 22 of the plates 15. Thus the end gate is removable by lifting the same upward out of the hooked portions or guides 22. When the gate is engaged with the guides 22 a substantial construction is provided. Split cotter pins or locking means 18, pierce the hooked por- Speeicaticn of Letters Patent.

tions 22 and the flange 41 to lock the end gate `in position.
The end gate 19a is provided with a lower door opening therein extending to the lower edge thereof and the side edges of the said door opening have outturned angular flanges 42. A door30, which is of sheet metal, is hinged to the upper edge of the said door opening and is adapted to swing over the opening between the said flanges 42, the door being provided with a handle 27. The lower end of the door opening is bent outwardly to form a flange 40 adapted to seat on the bottom of the wagon body, and the side edges of the door are provided with outwardly projecting angular hooked portions 26 which are arranged to fit over the flanges 42 to form a tight joint between the door and the end gate.
At each side of the door opening adjacent the respective flange 42 is hinged a latch 3l by means of the pin 32. The latches are bent from a strip of sheet metal to have an outer inwardly facing oblique portion 33 and the shoulder portion 34 in rear of the oblique portion to engage over the hooked portion 26 of the door 30. Ears 37 project from the end gate at slight distances from the latches 31 and rods 35 are slidable through the said ears and have inner reduced portions 38 piercing the latches 31. A pin 39 is passed through each reduced portion 38 to secure the rod 35 to the corresponding latch and a compression spring 36 is coiled around each rod 35 between the latch and the ear 37 thus giving an inward tension to the latch. Upon the door being swung against the end gate the hooked portions 26 are adapted to strike the oblique portions 33 of the latches and force same outwardly to permit the hooked portions 26 to engage the flanges 42, the latches engaging over the portions 26 to retain the door` in position.
An extension end gate 20EL is also provided for the extension sides 13 and is secured to the extension sides 13 in a manner similar to the manner of securing the end gate 19a to the sides 12. The extension or supplemental end gate 2Oa is provided with a lower flange 28 seating on an upper flange 29 of the end gate 19a, and is also provided with an upper flange 28a.
The extension sides and supplemental end gate may be removed as a unit, or the supplemental end gate may be removed together with the main end gate. Y
This invention, therefore, provides for a substantial, economical and efiicient wagon boX or body, and is adapted for various purposes. It is also understood that this invention is susceptible of alterations in its details within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:-
In a wagon boX, an end gate having a dooi1 opening, and a flange at one edge thereof, a door hinged to the end gate to swing over the door opening and having an outwardly disposed hooked portion ar- 'tion in rear of said oblique portion for engaging over the said hooked portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR I. HEADLEY.
