To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREXVL. W AesTAFF, a citizenof the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in crates, boxes, trunks and other containers, and the important features of the invention reside more particularly in special reinforcement and other fittings of the lid to hold the same firmly in position upon. the container and prevent said lid from being loosened or pulled off its hinges.

Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the inner reinforcing members, together with an abutment plate against which the former bears when the lid of the crate is in closed position.
In the drawing I have shown the invention applied to a rectangular crate having end walls 2 and 4, side walls 6 and 8, a lid 10 and a bottom 12. A handhold 14 is provided in each of the end walls 2 and 4 in equipped with the fittings constituting the order that the crate may be easily grasped and carried around.
One of the important features of the invention resides in a plurality of metallic straps 18, which are secured to the lid 10 and formed into integral hinge members at one end as indicated at 20. The hinge members 20 engage around U-shaped hinge members 22, the ends 23 of which are bent outwardly and pass through holes in retaining plates 24 to which they are riveted. The retaining plates 24 are secured to the back wall 8' of the crate by rivets 26 or other suitable means, thus insuring a strong construction, and are pressed outwardly as indicated at 27 to provide recesses to receive and sustain the vertical arms of the hinge members 23.
A reinforcing member 30, constituting a part of the invention, and having downturned terminals 32, is secured to the'inner surface of the lid by suitable fastening'devlces such as rivets 34, which also pass 'upwardlythrough the central metallic strap 18,'th'us holding the two firmly together on opposite sides of theflidlO.

Plates 38 are preferably placed against the inner surface of'the back wall 8 at'points opposite the endmost retainingfplates 24 to prevent the rivets,
26 .extending through the plates from being" pulled out through said back wall 8 when v the hinges of the lid 10 are subjected to stresses.
In order to secure the lid 10 in closed or locked position, the forward end of the central strap'18 is bent downwardly to form a tongue 42 which passes through a keeper 44 secured to a plate 48, which in turn is fastened firmly to the front wall 6 of the crate by the rivets 39.
A pring catch 52 is secured to the tongue 42 by suitable means such as rivets 54, said catch 52 having a curved intermediate portion 56 to engage over the keeper 44 and its end 58 being bent slightly outwardly so that on coming down in contact with the keeper 44 it will be forced outwardly, and on moving further down will spring into locked position as shown on Figs, 1 and 2.
When it is desired to lock the crate so that it cannot be opened by an unauthorized person a seal (not shown) is employed,one end of which passes through a small perforation 60in the end of the spring catch 52 and through a similar perforation 62 in the tongue 42, thus locking the two members firmly together.
While it is preferable to extend the metallic straps 18 across the lid as shown, where a less substantial structure may be used the two endmost straps 18 may be shortened to extend only part way across said lid 10, and the intermediate strap 18 may be made in two pieces, one piece having the hinge Abutn'ient plates 38 are secured to the 6 back and front 'walls of the crate, against members 20 and the other the tongue 42. From the foregoing it will be understood that I have provided strong .ancl duraible =cra'te fittings not likely to .work loose or break, and while I have shown the preferred. form of the invention, I reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Have thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I; p
1. A hinge comprising a plate having elongated recesses, .a strap and a member hinged to the strapand having arms in the recess in the plate, the ends of the arms passingthrough the plate, whereby the strap and plate will be hingedly secured together. 2. .A hinge comprising a retainer plate adapted to be secured to the rear wall of a container and provided with recesses, and a "Ushaped hinge member having arms disposed within the recesses and out-turned ends passing through the retaining plate andsecured'thereto. i
A hinge comprising two complementary'membersiand means for securing them together, one of the complementary zmembers consisting ofa plate havingparallel recesses, the ,othermember consisting of a strap, and means for connecting the plate to-be secured to the rear wall of the con tainer, a metallic plate in spaced relation with the retaining plate and adapted to bear against the inner face-dfthe rear wall of the container, and a U-shaped hinge'memher having arms disposed within recesses in the retaining plate and-having out-tu-rned ends passing through the retaining plate and secured thereto.
5. The combination with a plate having elongated recesses, 'a-strap, one end of which is provided with a hinge member, and a :U-
shaped member connected to the hinge member of the strap and having arms projected through the recesses, the ends of which ex tend through openings on the plate.
