Application filed .april 13,
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND MoDoimLn, a citizen of Canada, residing at Baltimore, in 'the county of Baltimore and State of lrlaryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in llVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches especially adapted for use on pipes.
Briefly stated, an important object of this invention is to provide a pipe wrench capable of being used in close places and having simple means whereby a positive grip may be obtained on the pipe to be turned.
Also, the invention aims to provide simple means whereby the jaw of the wrench may be conveniently released from positive engagement with the pipe.
A further object is to provide a pipe wrench which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a perspective of the improved wrench in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the same.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the wrench.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a tubular handle of any desired size and material and which is provided at its forward end with a socket member 6 having an attaching stem 7 secured in the forwardportion of the handle by means of a rivet 9 or other suitable fastening device. The rear portion of'the socket member 6 is formed with an annular shouldeiI l0 which flatly abuts the forward end of a collar ll threaded on the handle so that the socket member is securely braced and held against movement with relation to the handle.
In carrying out the invention, the socket member 6 is interiorly screw threaded for the reception of an exteriorly threaded tubular member 1li. As illustrated in Figure 2, the forward end of the tubular member le is provided with a head 16 having a pair of ears l? at one end and a pair of hooks 1922. Serif-1l No. 552,194.
18 at the other end. The ears 17 are permanently connected to a chain or other dexible ele'fnent 2O by means of a pin 22. The inte 1mediate portion of the chain may be adjustably Connected to the hooks 18 by means of the pins 24- of the several links for accommodating pipes of different diameters.
is illustrated in Figure 2, a jaw 30 is slidably arranged in an opening 3l in the head 16 and is provided with a rearwardly directed shank 34 sldable through the tubular member le. The shank 34 is extended beyond the rear end of the tubular member llland is provided with a coil spring 36 which is confined between the rear end of the tubular member and a stop pin 38 carried by the rear end of the shank. ln operation, when it is desired to engage the j aw 30 with the pipe, the handle 5 is turned counter-clockwise as viewed in Figure l so as to engage the rear end of the socket 4-0 with the rear end of the shank 34 and thereby advance the same. The movement of the `shank of course engages the jaw with the pipe so that a positive driving connection is provided.
@n the other hand, when it is desired to release the jaw 30 the handle 5 and the socket member 6 are turned clockwise as viewed in Figure l so as to permit the coil spring 36 to. retract the jaw 30.
Vith reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanyng drawing, it will be seen that a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention be conveniently connected to a pipe and operated in extremely close quarters.
l. A wrench comprising a handle, a socket member secured on the forward end thereof and having a longitudinally extending socket, a tubular member threaded into said socket and having a head formed with pairs of hooks and ears, a chain permanently con nected to said ears and adjustably connected, to said hooks, a jaw slidable through said head and having a shank slidable through the tubular member, the rear end of said socket being adapted to engage the rear'end of the shank, whereby the advancement of the socket member on said tubular member will advance the shank and jaw.
2. The construction set forth in claim l, and a coil spring confined between the rear end of the tubular member and the rear end of the shank 'for urging the jaw to its retracted position.
3. rEhe construction set forth in claim 2, an attaching Stern carried by the rear end of said socket member and secured Within Said handle, and a Collar arranged on the forward end ot said handle and flatly engaged by the rear portion ot said socket member.
4. A. pipe Wrench comprising a handle7 a Socket member scoured on the forward end thereof and having a, longitudinally7 entending socket, a tubular member threaded into EDMUND MCDONALD.
