J WALLACE LOY, OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNQB OF ONT-HALF TO ALFRED PELTON', 01E LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
WINDOVJ-SASH LOCK.
Application filed January 6, 1921.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that I, J VVALLAon LoY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Long Beach, county of Los Angeles, and State of California. have invented oertain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window sash locks, and more particularly to a detachable, or independent, window sash lock which can be carried from place to place and readily applied to the sash of a window, whereby to lock the upper and lower sash so that they cannot be moved. In order to explain my invention I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings, with key actuating means, and I will now explain this particular embodiment of my invention. In the drawings- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the upper and lower sash of a window, with my lock applied thereto, with the key in place;
Figure 2 is an inside view, with the face plate removed;
Figure 3 is an edge view thereof;
Figure 4: is a view of the rear side of the look; and
Figure 5 is a View of one form of key for actuating the mechanism.
My invention as here illustrated is intended to be applied above the lower sash, 1, to the spacing strip 2, and so as to be locked thereto and to the upper sash, 3. To this end the body of the lock is made preferably of sheet metal and is designated, 4, with one long edge, 5, bent to an angle, and its upper and lower ends bent to angles, 6 and 7, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. Applied to the rear side of said body, 4:, is an angle plate 8, whereby to form a channel, 9, for the spacing strip 2, of the window. Mpunted on said angle plate and through said body, is a shaft, 10, on the end of which is mounted a sharp edged member 11, adapted to be turned by means of the key, applied to its key-end 10, to secure the lock to the spacing strip, said sharp member 11 bemg forced into the side of said strip in a manner which will be well understood. The end angles 6 and 7 are provided with notches, 6 and 7 to receive a window cord as the lock is applied to the window.
Mounted on the opposite side of the body Serial No. 435,387.
plate 4, is a movable plate member 12, securedby means of rivet and slot means, as at 13. Said movable plate 12 has two extensions, 12, 12, the ends of which are turned to an angle, as at 12, 12, to bear against the side of the upper window sash, when the device is applied thereto, as indicated in Fig. 1. Said movable plate is moved back and forth by means of a screw, 14-, connected therewith, as at 15, and having bearings at 16, and 17, in the body plate 4. Said screw has a key end, it here shown to be of rectangular form in cross section, but of course it can be of any desired form so as to make it more diflicult to use other keys thereon. Pivotally mounted on the body plate 4, is a lock lever, 18, having the prongs 18, while its upper end is extended and adapted to be engaged and. moved by means of an eccentric member, 19, on a key shaft 20. This lock lever 18 extends down over the side of the lower window sash 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and when the member 19 is turned by means of the key, said lock lever is forced into the window sash, as shown, thus locking the device to the lower sash. A face plate, 21 is preferably mounted over the side shown in F 2, which face plate is in place in 1. The one key is adapted to operate all three key members. The size and form of the device can be changed, as may be desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention. The device can be applied a short distance above the lower sash, if desired, so as to permit said lower sash. to be raised a few inches before it engages with the look, but this a mere matter of adjust ment or application of the lock to the win dow. I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the particular embodiment used for illustrative purposes except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a window frame and window sashes with window strips therebetween, of locking means for said sashes comprising a body having a fixed channel formed therein and adapted to fit over said meeting rail above the upper end of a window sash, means in said channel adapted to be turned so as to lock to said meeting rail, whereby to hold said device to said frame, a movable member on the body adapted to be moved into locking engagement with the face of the other window sash, and means for moving the same into holding engagement with said other window sash.
2. In combination with a window frame and upper and lower window sashes with meeting rail therebetween, of locking means for locking said sashes against movement comprising a body having an open channel formed by rigid members and adapted to fit over said meeting rail above the lower sash, a member in said channel adapted to be moved into locking engagement with said window strip, a movable looking member on the body and movable toward and from the upper sash and adapted to be moved into locking engagement with the face of said upper sash, and key actuated means for moving said movable locking member relative to said body into and out of locking engagement with said upper sash.
3. A window sash look of the character described, comprising in combination with a Window frame having two window sashes slidably mounted therein with a meeting rail therebetween, a body having portions adapted to fit over said meeting rail adjacent the end of one of said window sashes, a sharp element movably mounted in said body and adapted to be moved to bite into said meeting rail to lock said body to said rail, and a movable part in said body adjacent the face of the other window sash, with means for moving it into frictional engagement with the face thereof for looking it against movement.
Signed at Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, this 29th day of December,1920.
