Description

june 10, 1930. J. SLINGERLAND WINDOW FASTENER Filed "Feb. 3, 1928 ATT oRNEYs Patented June 1c, 1930 UNITED s'r a'res PATENT a;
FFHZE ARTHUR J. SLINGERLAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS wmnow FASTENER Application filed February 3, 1928. Seriahll'o. 251,619.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a fastening device wherein novel means is em-. ployed for. positively looking a window in any desired position. i
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which has novel means for holding the window 1 Other objects and advantages will appear 3 in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accon1- panying drawings, forming partof this ap- PllC2ttlO11,ll1 which Figure 1 is av longitudinal sectional view of p the window construction illustrating the novel fastening means, i Figure 2 is a front elevation of the window construction. illustrating the fastening means, and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the fastening means shown inoperative position in solid lines and out of operative position in dotted lines. y
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a window frame 1 having.longitudinally extending grooves 2 therein. A window. 8 is provided with tongue portions 4; which are movably disposed in the grooves 2.
I provide a corrugated fastening strip 5 rigidly secured to the frame 1 at each end 3y means of screws 6 or the like. The fa s toning strip 5 is provided with transversely 9 extending side port-ions 7. The fastening strip is also providedwith receiving grooves 8 and retaining shoulder-s9.
A fastener 10 is pivotally mounted at 11 upon the window 3 and is provided with a hinge portion 12. A tension spring 13 is disi posed concentric with the shaft 14 of the h1ngeport1on12. One end of the spring 13 bears against the base portion 15 of the fastener1 0, andthe other end bearsagainstthe movable portion 16. i i
The movable portion 16 is provided with an integrallip 17 at the outer extremity thereof whichtapers inwardly toconform to the generalcontour of the locking strip 5 in cross section. The IDOVitlilQPOltlOIl 1613 also provlded with retaining cars 18 which are arranged to extend around the edges of the locking strip for a purpose hereinafter described. A handle or knob 19 is provided for the movable portion 16. v
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation there of may be readily understood. Let us assume that the fastener 10 is in the position shown in solid lines. It is obvious that the tension spring 13- tends to force the movable member 16 into and hold it in close engagement with Ell thefastening strip 5. In so doing, the lip 17 is received in one of the recesses 8 and abuts the adjacent retaining shoulder 9. Therefore, any tendency to move the window 3 upwardly with respect to the frame 1 would tend to more firmly force the lip 17 into locking engagement with the fastening strip 5.
The window 3 may be moved downwardly, I
and, in doing so, the lip 17 of the movable.
member 16 will ride over the retaining shoulders 9 until the movement of the window has ceased. Then, if the window is forced upwardly, the lip 17 will be forced by the spring 13 into the adjacent recess 8 and against the adjacent shoulder 9. he retaining ears 18 extend upon each side of the fastening strip 5 for holding the movable member against lateral displacement. The cars 18 also hold the window against lateral movement.
The fastener 10 may be freed from the fastening strip 5 by theoperatofis gripping the handle 19 and drawing the movable member lG free from the fastening strip.
WVhen the movable member 16 is freed from the fastening strip, the latch or lock 10 may be swung about the pivot 11 and allowed to remain in the dotted line position shown in Figure 3 out of engagement With the fastening strip. i
I claim: 1. A device of the type described comprising a fastening strip having transversely extending side portions, a fastener, means for holding said fastener in engagement with said fastening strip, and ears integral With said fastener and extending substantially'at right angles With respect thereto, said ears be- 15 ing adapted to be disposed upon each side of said fastening strip and to engage With said side portions irrespective of the movement of saidfastener With respect to said fastening strip.
7 '2'0 2. A device of the type described comprising a fastening strip having transversely extending side portions, a fastener, means for holding said fastener in engagement with said fastening strip, ears integral With said fastener and extending substantially at right angles with respect thereto, said ears being adapted to be disposed upon each side of said fastening strip and to engage With said side portions irrespective of the movement of said fastener With respect to said fastening strip,
and means for pivotally supporting said fastener whereby said fastener may be moved out of engagement With said fastening strip. Signed at Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, this 31st day of January, A. D. 1928.
