WILLIAIVI T. CONEY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, :ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN HARDVIARE CORPORATION, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPQRATION OF CONNECTICUT.
CYLINDER LOCK.
Application filed April 25.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ViLLIAM T. CoNEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, Hartford County, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Cylinder Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cylinder locks. My object is to provide certain new and improved features of construction aiming to render the device safe against picking.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. l is a longitudinal section through the center of the line.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. .1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a detail.
1 represents a stationary case or mounting. 2 represents a cylinder rotatable therein when unlocked. 3 represents a rotatable key barrel in the cylinder 2. L-i represents the usual pin tumblers which excepting when a proper key is inserted into the key barrel 3 serve to lock the key barrel against rotation in the cylinder 2. 5 is a bolt which is carried by the cylinder 2, theend of which is adapted to project into a recess in the surrounding wall of the casing 1 to normally lock the cylinder 2 against rotation in said casing. 7 conventionally represents a cam or other suitable device secured to rear end of the cylinder 2 and by means of which motion is transmitted to the part to be operated when the cylinder 2 is rotated. The inner end of the key barrel 3 is provided with an eccentric 6 which extends into a notch in the side of the bolt 5 which eccentric, when the key barrel 3 is turned clockwise as viewed in Fig. 2, will retract the bolt 5 so as to withdraw the end of the same from the casing 1 suiiiciently to permit the cylinder 2 and its contained parts to be thereafter bodily turned within the casing 1.
In the ordinary construction of key barrels the key slot is extended therethrough from end to end. It has been found that locks of this character may be easily picked by means of a wire, the end of which is properly bent so that when the wire is passed through the lower part of the slot below the pins its bent end may be engaged with the bolt 6 so that the latter may be lifted and 1922. Serial No. 556,376. 4. t3 freed from the mounting 1 wherdhpon the cylinder 2 is released and may be turned. To prevent this method of attack I provide a barrier at the rear end of the key slot in the key plug, the same being indicated at 8. A suitable passage is formed through the key barrel, said passage intersecting the key slot and extending transversely thereof. The barrier 8 is shaped to fit tightly in said passage since when once in place it need never be removed.
9 represents a fixed pin in the cylinder 2 which projects into a segmental recess in the wall of the key barrel beyond the pin tumblers. The function of the pin 9 is to limit the rotary movement of the key barrel 3 relatively to the cylinder 2 so that when the key barrel 3 is rotated by a key sufiiciently to withdraw the bolt 5 from the casing 1 a continued strain on the key in the same direction will cause the parts 2 and 3 to rotate bodily within the mounting 1 so that the cam 7 carried by part 2 will then be moved to perform its function.
10 is a spring which is preferably provied to normally project the bolt I so that when a reverse movement is applied to the key barrel and the parts are turned back the bolt 4 will snap into the opening in the mounting 1 when the same is reached, looking the parts in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a cylinder lock of the character described, a stationary mounting, a cylinder rotatable therein, a key barrel rotatable in said cylinder, a bolt carried by the cylinder and operated by the key barrel, said key barrel having a longitudinal key slot therein and a barrier at the inner end of said slot to close the same.
2. In a cylinder lock of the character described, a stationary mounting, a cylinder rotatable therein, a key barrel rotatable in said cylinder, a bolt carried by the cylinder and operated by the key barrel, said key barrel having a longitudinal key slot therein and barrier at the inner end of said slot to close the same, said barrier comprising an insert extending transversely across the slot.
3. In a cylinder lock of the character described, a stationary mounting, a cylinder rotatable therein, a key barrel rotatable in said cylinder, a bolt carried by the cylinder and operated by the key barrel, said key barrel having a longitudinal key slot therein said cylinder, a bolt carried by the cylinder and a barrier at the inner end of said slot and operated by the key barrel, said key to close the same, and means to limit the barrel having a longitudinal key slot therein 10 rotation of the key barrel in said cylinder. and a barrier at the inner end of said slot to 4. In a cylinder lock of the character declose the same, said bolt being arranged at scribed, a stationary mounting, a cylinder right angles to said barrel. rotatable therein, a key barrel rotatable in WILLIAM T. CONEY.
