LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application :filed April 3, 1909. Serial No. 487,778.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BERNHARD SUMMER- FIELD, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to locks, and more particularly to that class of locks embodying a cylinder adapted to screw within portions of a bolt cage, and carrying tumbler pins, and a barrel, in which a key is inserted, rotatable within the cylinder upon the correct positioning of the tumbler pins by the irregular edges of the key.
The object of my invention is to provide a cylinder barrel having a key receiving slot of a novel shape whereby two sets of tumbler pins may be employed, and whereby to render more difficult the insertion of a wire or other instrument, with which to pick the lock.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for securing the cylinder from removal, except when the barrel is unlocked and rotated, other than the set screws ordinarily employed, and also means with which the bolt sweep may engage, thus insuring the cylinder against removal should the door to which it is applied, be open.
These objects andnumerous apparent advantages I attain by the structure shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the cylinder and barrel on the line of the central portion of the barrel key slot, the barrel being locked. Figs. 2 and 3 are end elevations thereof respectively illustrating the operating parts located therein and removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the cylinder locking pin, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the key formed to lit the barrel slot.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a cylinder 1 threaded for a short distance from its inner end and provided upon its outer end with an outstanding circular flange 2. Within the base of cylinder 1 is arranged the barrel 3 tothe inner end of which is secured a gear 4 meshing with a gear 5, which latter gear 5 carries the bolt sweep 6 rotatable upon the screw 5a securing one end of the bridge plate 7 to the inner end of cylinder 1 across its base and the inner end of the barrel 8.
According to my present invention I provide the barrel 3 with a key slot 8, the side portions of which are offset from the central portion, and the cylinder 1 with diametrically opposing sets of tumbler pins 9 in alinement with the oset side portions of the slot 8. The key, as shown in Fig. G, is of comformable shape, having the irregular tumbler pin-engaging edges 10 of its shank offset from the central portion 11 thereof. Thus the specified shape of the barrel slot provides for two series of tumbler pins, rendering it doubly diflicult to pick, and further renders more ditlicult the insertion of an instrument with which to manipulate the tumbler pins. I further provide the cylinder 1 with a longitudinal slot extending through its periphery and its fiange 2, in which is located a locking pin 12, of such thickness as to project beyond the cylinder periphery and engage partly within a slot in the bolt cage 15 as shown in Fig. 2. The outer end of the pin 12 has a projection 13 to complete the broken cylinder flange 2, while its inner end is provided with a cutout portion lll within which, as shown, the bolt sweep 6 engages in the normal (locked) position of the device, and as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the cylinder locking pin 12 may not be withdrawn, and said cylinder consequently may not be rotated to remove the same until the proper key is inserted in the barrel, and turned to move the bolt sweep G out of the locking pins slot 14.
Having thus described my invention, I claim,
In a lock ofthe character described, the combination of a cylinder provided with a peripheral slot, a barrel rotatable within said cylinder, a bolt sweep actuated by said barrel, and a locking pin disposed within, and projecting beyond, the said cylinder slot and provided with a cut-out portion within which the bolt sweep engages in the locked position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
BERNHARD SUMMERFIELD.
