Description

Patented July 17, 1923.
ALBERT C. HILL,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
AUTOMOBILE LOCK.
Application filed November 25, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. HILL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automobile locks, and has for its object the construction of an improved device for that purpose.
In the accompanying drawings- Fig. 1 is a plan;
Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section;
Figs. 3 and 4t are elevations in the directions 8 and 4:, respectively, on Fig. 2;
Figsn5 and 6 are details.
In general appearance, the device is a block of metal composed of parts 11 and 12 which are secured together and to the tube 13 which forms the stationary part of an automobile steering post. The parts 11 and 12 are put together temporarily, and then bored out to fit the post 13.
The part 12 has corners cut out as shown at 1 1 in Fig. 5,and the part 11 has projecting fingers 15 which fit into the corners. Holes 16 are drilled thru the adjacent fingers 15 and those portions of part 12 which lie between these fingers. These holes are reamed out slightly tapered so that when hardened dowel pins 17 are driven into these holes from opposite directions they cannot be withdrawn for the purpose of removing the device from the post 13. In other words, it is intended that the device shall be connected permanently to the post 13, and removable only by metal cutting operations.
Before the parts are put together, the part 11 is counterbored from on the post 13 and in a direction which is perpendicular to the direction of the bore for the post. This counterbore is in three steps which are of difierent diameter, and are eccentric to each other.
The deepest part of the counterbore, and the one which is of thesmallest diameter, is bored thru the outer face of the part, but so as to leave a lip 18. Pushed intothis bore from the inner direction is a pin lock 19 which is secured against being rotated in its bore in any convenient manner. The tumbler 20, of the lock 19, which contains the key hole 21, may be turned in the main body of the look by the turning of an inserted key.
. responding groove in the 'cupied by a disk the side which fits- Serial No. 517,45 5.
The intermediate step of the counterbore is occupied by a disk 22 having a cam surface 23 on one face, and a projection 24 on the other face, which projection fits into a cortumbler 20 so that turning a key in the lock turns the disk 22. The disk 22 is secured to the tumbler by screws 25. I
The largest step of the eounterbore isoc or plate 26 which is secured to the part 11 by screws 27 one of which is shown in Fig. 1. Eccentrically placed on the disk 26 is a boss 27 which projects into the bore which fits o-npost 13, and consequently into a hole in that ,post when the device is secured in place. The boss 27 is bored out, to receive a plunger 28 having a flange 29. Springs .80 located within the boss and acting upon the flange, serve. to push the plunger against the cam disk 22. When the disk 22 is in the position shown in the drawings, the plunger or bolt 28 is pushed into a hole 31 in the movable part 32 of the steering post and serves to secure it to the stationary part 13. When the key is turned in the look so as to rotate the disk 22 to a position which will bring the cut away part of cam 23 under the plunger 28, the springs 30 act upon plunger 28 to withdraw it from the movable post 32.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device is located at a definite place on the steering post by the boss 27 entering a hole in the stationary part of that post, and then is secured in position by dowel pins driven into the device in such a way that they can be removed only by a metal cutting operation. The term permanently connected as herein used refers to a connection of this character.
The locking parts of sorted into a. solid block interior before the device is secured to the post, and when so secured these parts can be reached only by a key or by cutting away a considerable body of solid metal. When the device is locked, it can be released only by the use of a key or by operations which the device are in- ,aie difficult and necessarily take a long time perform.
The key used with this form of lock can be removed only when the tumbler 20 is in a certain position, and the cam is so connected to the tumbler that the plunger 28 is in the hole 31 when the tumbler is in this position. In other words, a person cannot of metal from the I remove the key from the device Without first locking the steering Wheel against niove ment.
The plunger 28 is not pushed into locking position by springs, but by a cam which rests upon the ledge in the solid metal of part 11. As a consequence, the key cannot be removed until the plunger or bolt :28 is forced into locking position. If anything should prevent/the bolt 28 from entering hole 31, that thing would also prevent the removal of the key from the look. If anyone should insert an instrument into tube 32 and attempt to release the look by push ing the bolt back, such operation Would be ineffective because the bolt is backed by the lat face of a disk which rests npona solid ledge I What I claim is: I
1. In a device of the clam described, a block having; a face arranged to engage a steering post and said-face having a counterbore therein, a look, a cam and a cover plate located in said counterbore, said plate having a boss'projecting into the post to which the device is connected, 1 loeking'bolt supported in said plate, and means by which a key inserted in said lock will operate said earn to move said bolt.
2. In a device of the class described, a block formed of two parts bored out in the line of the junction between the parts and one of said parts being counterbored from the interior in a direction perpendicular to the bore, a cam located in said counterbore and having its back bearing against the metal of the block at the bottom of the counter-bore, a. bolt supported With its end against the face of the earn, and means for turning said earn in its counterbore to force said bolt into locki11g;position.
In a device of the class described, the combination with a steering post, of'a block formed of two parts bored out at the line of junction between the parts and oneof'said parts being counterbored from the interior in a direction perpendicular to the bore, a loclcandcamoperatedithereb-y located in the counter-bore and having their axes :parallel with the axis of the counterbore, a {plate covering the caunandhaving a-boss projectinginto the postwto locate the device thereon, and a bolt located insaid boss and-operated by said cam.
4. In a device of the class'described, the combination With a steering post, of a block arrai'igedto be secured to the post, a look and Cain inserted thru an opening closed bythe post when the block is in place, a plate located in-the block between the canrand'the postrand having a projection extending into the post to'deterinine the location of the device on the pest,and a bolt 'locatedin said projection and operated bysaid-cam.
