COMBINATION SPADLOCK.
Application filed November 28, 1922. Serial No. 603,728.

Be it known that I, TOMASZ SZUTKOWSKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at South Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination locks, being intended more particularly for embodiment in a combination lock, the invention having for an object to provide a simple, efiicient and inexpensive combination padlock. s
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In constructing my improved padlock I provide a solid central body 10 of cylindrical form and having diminished studs 11 projecting from opposite ends thereof to hold in place a pair of disk-heads 12, 13 which are of somewhat larger diameter than the body, these disk-heads having suitable central apertures through which the studs 11 pass, the ends of the latter being riveted down on the heads to fix the heads on the ends of the body 10.
Extending from end to end of the body 10, on opposite sides thereof, are grooves 14 and 15 respectively which receive the legs of the shackle 16 which is of substantially U-shape with parallel legs 16 and 16, the former of which engages in the groove 14 and the latter in the groove 15. Formed in the head 12 are a pair of apertures 17 and 18 through which the respective legs 16' and 16 of the shackle are inserted, while the head 13 has an aperture 19 therein to receive the tip of la I slightly longer than the leg 16'.
The shackle leg 16 is formed with a series of b'ackwardly facing ratchet toothed elements 22, and adapted to be engaged by a series of rings 23, as here shown four in number, which freely surround the body 10 between the heads 12 and 13 thereof, and which engage the teeth 22'of the shackle to lock the latter. Each of these rings has a notch 21 cut in the inner wall thereof to permit of withdrawal of the shackle, by rotating said rings until the notches 24 are all in registry with the shackle teeth 22. The bores of the rings 23 are flared outwardly and backwardly as shown at 25 to cause the rings to clear the teeth 22 while said rings are being rotated. The rings 23 mayeach have a series of dummy recesses '26 formed in their forward faces to confuse anyone trying to work the shackle out by adjustmg one ring after the other.
The rings 23 and heads 12, 13 are provided with suitable numbered markings such 1 as 28 to enable the rings to be properly positioned, with their notches 24; registering with the shackle leg 16 In Fig. 6 I have shown in detail the construction of the toothed elements 22.
