Dec.. 23, 1930. o. M. PANINIIER STAMPING HEAD Filed June 19, 1929 FIG. 11
FIG. ILL
INVENTOR Oscar M. Pangl ier b mwgwz/m his aft omega Patented Dec. 23, 1930 UNITED STATES OSCAR M. PANNIER', or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIALASSIGNOR TO P NNIER Janos.
STAMP COMPANY, INC, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF.
PENNSYLVANIA Application filed June 19,
This invention relates to a stamping head and to means for locking dies therein.
The object of the invention is to provide a stamping head for removable dies, in which the die retaining means are strong and simple, and in which the locking member proper for engaging the dies may be detained either in position to lock the dies in the head, or in position to permit the insertion and removal thereof, without removing the locking mem ber proper from the head, and without the operation of any special latch so arranged as to prevent removal of the locking member proper.
Another object of the invention is to soarrange the die retaining means in the stamping head that they do not project a material distance beyond any surface thereof.
In the accompanying drawings Figure I is a vertical sectional View through the stamping head of the present invention, showing the locking bar or looking member proper in position to permit the insertion or removal of dies; Fig. II is a similar view showing the locking member proper-"in position to secure the dies in the head; and Figure III is a cross sectional view taken on the line IIIIII of Figure I.
In the drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the die carrying head, which is provided with a recess 2 arranged to receive the dies 3. Each of the dies 3 is provided on one side face with a notch 1- arranged to match with an opposed groove 5 extending longitudinally of one of the side walls 6 of the die receiving recess 2. The dies are locked in position by means of a locking member proper, or locking bar 7, which extends through holes 8 and 9 in'the end walls lO a'nd 11 of the head, and which is adapted to lie within both the notches at and the type and the longitudinal groove 5 in side wall 6 of the head.
The special locking means of the devlce comprise a metallic ball 12, which lies within a chamber 13 in the end wall 10 of the locking head, and which is pressed outwardly by means of a coil spring 14, so that it projects partially into the hole 8-which is disposed in the end wall 10 of the stamping head. Ad acent its ends the locking bar 7 is provided STAMPING-7V IrEAn I 1929. Serial No. 372,096.
the opposite wall of thelocking head is an indentation, or thumb notchl'? within which one end of the locking bar lies when it is in position to retain the dies in the head.
In order to insert dies, the lockingbar 7 is moved into the position shown. in Figure I of the drawings, with the hall 1.2 engaging the groove 15 in the locking member to detain it in extended position. 1 It will be understood that in order to wholly removethe locking bar if so desired, it is merely necessary to pull it outwardly so that, the ball 12 is forced rearwardly against the resistance of spring 14 and rides out of the groove 15. In the position shown in Figure I, the dies are inserted with their side notches & matching the longitudinal groove 5 adjacent the recess 2 of the looking head.
The locking bar is then forced longitudinally along the groove 5 until it is detained by engagement of the notch 16 with the ball 12. In this position the type or diesare securely held in the recess 2 of the head in such manner as to prevent accidental dislodgment.
The locking bar 7 lies substantially wholly within the body of the head, so that it presents no extending portions which might interfere with the operation of the machine to which the head is attached.
In order to remove the dies or type, pressure is exerted on the end of the locking bar lying within the thumb notch 17 toforce the opposite end outwardly beyond the end wall of the head. The rod may then be pulled longitudinally until groove 15 is again in engagement with the ball 12.
Marked advantages of the present invention are the strength and simplicity of the die retaining means. The locking bar 7 may be of material diameter, and does not project beyond the surfaoes of the head so that it may strike any obstacle during use of the stamping head. It is not necessary to operate any latch in order to place the locking bar in position for the insertion or removal of dies. and the locking bar may be readily pulled into position for such insertion or removal without removing it completely from the body of the stamping head.
That I claim is:
A stamping head comprising a body having a type receiving recess therein and a groove in a side of the body extending longitudinally of the recess, a locking bar arranged tolie in the groove in the side Wall of the body and having a circumferential groove adjacent both ends thereof, type insertable in said recess and formed to engage said locking bar, and a spring pressed member housed in an end Wall of the body and arranged to alternatively engage the circumferential grooves adjacent the ends of the locking bar to detain the locking member in adjusted position longitudinally of the body of the stamp ing head, said spring pressed member being so arranged in the body of the stamping head and in circumferential grooves so disposed adjacent the ends of the locking bar that the locking bar is detained in looking position by engagement of the spring pressed member in one of said grooves and may be held in out- Ward position beyond the recess in the body of the stamping head Without completely removing it from the stamping head by engagement with the other of said grooves.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
OSCAR M. PANNIER.
