A TTORNE YS Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
LOCK.
Application filed November 2S, 1923. Serial No. 676,538.
To all fio/"mm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, J'ULiUs STANLEY llfaon'inu a citizen ot' the United Stat-es, and a resident of Kemmerer, in the county of .Lincoln and State of Wyoming. have in-` vented certain new and useful Improve ments in Locks1 ot which the iollowing is a specification.
',llhis invention relates to locks and has tor its object the provision of a simple eiiicient aud structurally strong device.
Another object oil the invention is the provision oi a lock lpresenting the appearance ot a simple barrel closed at opposite ends and with a sivingable shackle locked in position by a bolt actuated to locked position by a powerful spring'.
il. ifurther object of the invention is the provision ot a spirally threaded keyadapted to engage cooperating internal threads in a bolt for withdrawing` the keeper to release the usual swingable shackle when it is desired to discngage the lock `from the usual staples mounted upon the elements forming the closure to a chamber. i j y l '.llus invention will `be best understood Vtrom a consideration of the following detailed description. in view of the accompanying drawing forming a part o the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such clninges and modifications which shall detine no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a view in perspective of my improved lock applied to a closure.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section oil the same with the lock in open position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section oi the lock showing the bolt in closed posi tion.
Figure 4 is an end view of the lock.
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section of the lock taken along the line 5-5 ot' Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal vertical section oi the key tor releasing the bolt of the lock.
Figure 7 is an end view of the key shown in Figure 6.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a cylindrical barrel having one end closed by a plug or disc 2 and a ring 3 rigidly mounted in the opposite end of the barrel and through which is slid? ably mounted a cylindrical bolt 4. The main body of the bolt is spaced from the inner wall ot the barrel 1 and is provided with an annular shoulder or enlargement 5 haring its periphery in engagement and sliduble on the inner wall of the barrel.
,fi coil spring 6 is located between the main body portion oit the bolt 4 and the inner wall ot the barrel 1 and has one end in #engagement with the enlargement 5 and its other end abutting the ring 3. A cylindrical lug "i" projects laterally from the enlargei it b ot the bolt and is mounted eccenon the outer face of said enlargei outer wall oi the barrel is provided ir or upstanding ears 8 between a swingable cle it). The free end of the shackle is ied to be inserted through an opening ll in the wall ot the barrel and is provided with a perforation through which the lug is ifiscrtcd when the shackle is locked in tion and when. the bolt has been released by u key which will be presently described.
r,The bolt 4 is provided with a central bore lhaving internal threads 14. The inner end oi" the bore 13 is provided with a threaded passage into which is screwed the threaded end oi a pin 15 which extends longitudinallyl and centrally of the bore and terminates at the outer end of the bolt 4.
A cylindrical key 1G has external threads 17 adapted to mesh with the internal threads 14 ot' the bore 13. The key is provided with a central longitudinal passage 18 for receiving the pin 15.V Formed integrally with the key 16 .is a cup-shaped member 19 having an internal diameter of sufcient breadth to receive the outer end oit the bolt 4 when said bolt is forced outwardly by the key,.the end 2O ot the cup-shaped member being adapted to engage the ring 3 in the barrel l. A handle 21 is provided at the rear of the cupshaped member 19 for operating the key 16.
The lock is shown applied to any form of closure with a base plate 22 secured to one portion oi the closure while a base plate 23 is secured to the other member of the closure, A staple 24 projects laterally from the base plate 22 and is rigidly connected therewith. A staple 25 is rigidly connected with the base plate 23 and is adapted to aline with staple 24 when the The with a y, which is pivotally mounted at 9 sha elements of the closure are in position Yfor receiving the sivingable shackle l0.
The operation ot my device is as follows:
In Figure 3 the holt Llis normally located Within the barrel l with the lugv 7 inserted Within the perforation l2 in the tree end of the swingahle shackle l() whereby said shackle is locked in position. The spring- 6 forces the `holt normally Within the barrel l and therelfore maintains the lug 7 in engagement with the passage in the swinaahle shackle hasp l0. block mounted upon the inner Wall of the barrel l and dian'ietrically opposite to the passage l in said barrel is adapted to limit the inivard movement ot the holt ll.
Then it is desired. to release the lug' 7 from the passage l2 in the snf'ingahle shackle, the key 'i6 is inserted Within the threaded here of the holt Ll and rotated through the handle 2l. Vllhe inner end 2O ot the cup-shaped member lf) resting upon the ring- 3 maintains the key from longitudinal movement and therefore causes the holt 4 to he withdrawn as the threads 17 ot the key mesh with the internal threads ldioitl the bore 13. ldlhen the holt has heen sulliciently withdrawn and the lug' 7 released from the perforation l2 in the swinggahle shackle, said shackle may be Withdrawn.
The pin 15 slides Within the passage i8 in the key When the holt 4 is Withdrawn trom the barrel. The pin 15 mounted centrally of the bore of the holt 4l is adapted to prevent the insertion of any form of' rotatable means having` threads of proper pitch to engage the internal threads of the bore to prevent unauthorized Withdrawal ot the holt from the shackle.
lhat l claim is:
A lock comprising a hollow barrel, a holt slidahly mounted in said barrel and provided With an internally threaded hore and a shoulder at one end. a pin rigidly mounted in the inner end of the holt and projecting centrally through the bore, a ring mounted at one end oi the barrel, a coil spring embracing the holt and having one end in engagement with the ring` and its other end in engagement with the shoulder on the holt. a shackle pivotally mounted on the barrel at one end and provided with a perforation at its 'lree end, said barrel being' provided With a passage to which. the tree end or the shackle is adapted to loe inserted. a lue` on the inner end o'l' the holt and adapted to he forced into the perforation in the tree end ot the shackle hy the spring', means on the inner end of the barrel adapted to limit the inward movement ot the holt. means enclosing one end ot' the barrel, a key provided With a bore adapted to receive the pin in the holt. threads on the key adapted to mesh with the internal. threads on the bore of the holt` and a cap on fthe outer end of the key havingr a peripheral Hange adapted to enggapje the ring! in the barrel and cooperating with the intermeshingl' threads of the key and the F internal threads of the bolt Jfor causing' Withdrawal ot the bolt when the key is rotated.
