IMPROVEMENT iN HEMMERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,433, dated October 7, 1873; application filed August 21, 1873. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. BROWN, of Hopkinton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hemmers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in hemmers; and it consists in pivoting to its side an adjustable flanged gage, so as to regulate the width of the hem and facilitate the introduction of the material, as will be more fully described hereafter.

a represents an ordinary hemmer, which is secured to the fame of the machine in the usual manner. Pivoted to its side is the gage c, which can be freely opened and closed at will, and which has a flange, 1, formed upon its inner side, as shown in Fig. 2, which catches `upon the top of the hemmer and prevents the gage from moving too far downward. Instead of this flange, the pivoted end of the gage may be so formed as to catch under the shoulder 2 and answer the same purpose.
While open, the cloth can be much more easily inserted than in the common hemmer, and the hem will be begun as perfectly as any other part. The gage, when closed, acts as a guide to the cloth as it passes through.
By leaving the gage slightly raised the cloth will readily pass under it, and hems of any desired width can be made by simply folding the cloth to the width wanted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The hemmer a, in combination with the pivoted vertically-moving gage c, provided with a suitable flange or stop, substantially as shown and described.
