HEMMING- ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Application filed October 15, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, WILLIAM NICHOLSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San i whenever it is desired to do so by the operator. In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a scroll divided in the direction of its length to form two scroll sections, and means for moving the sections one relative to the other to open or close the scroll.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the hemming attachment; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the scroll sections in closed position; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same with the scroll sections in open position; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
The scroll of the hemming attachment is made in two sections, of which one is the base section and includes the base plate A and the side B, and the other is the roof section and includes the roof 0 terminating in the turn-under plate D. The righthand edge of the roof section C forms a continuation of the side B at the time the scroll sections are in closed position, and the said turn-under plate D is arranged on the left-hand side of the roof section 0 and is intermediate the top of the roof C and the base plate A at the time the scroll sections are in closed position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The base plate A and its side B are soldered or otherwise secured to an attaching arm comprising a main member E Specification of Letters Patent.

and an auxiliary member E the attaching arm being adapted to be fastened to the sewing machine table in the usual manner. The roof section C is attached to one end of an arm I" terminating in a flat spring F secured to the attaching arm E to allow the arm F to swing down or up with a view to move the roof section of the scroll into closed or open position, as will be readily understood by comparison of Figs. 2 and 3. The arm F is provided intermediate its length with a wear plate F engaged by a member G in the form of a friction roller held on a wrist pin H projecting from a crank I secured on a short shaft I mounted to turn in a vertically-disposed bearing E attached to or forming part of the attaching arm. The front end of the shaft 1 is provided with a handle J under the control of the operator for turning the shaft 1 and the crank I with a view to cause the friction roller G to press the arm F downward so as to swing the roof section of the scroll into closed position relative to the base section. The downward swinging movement of the handle J is limited by a stop K held on the attaching arm, and the upward swinging movement of the handle J is limited by a stop K arranged on the bearing E. It is understood that when the handle J is swung downward into the position shown in Fig. 1 then the friction roller G swings the arm F downward so as to move the roof section into closed position, it being understood that when the roof section is in closed position the roller G is somewhat to the right of a vertical plane passing through the axis of the shaft I, so that the arm J, shaft 1, crank I and roller G are held in locked position to keep the roof section C of the scroll in closed position. WVhen it is desired to open the roof section C the operator swings the handle J upward until it abuts against the stop K and in doing so the roller G moves upward and thereby releases the arm F whereby the latter is swung upward by the action of its spring F to move the roof section G into open position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to allow the operator to conveniently remove the work from the hemming attachment whenever it is desired to do so.
It is understood that the scroll is provided with the usual flaring mouth for the convenient entrance of the fabric material,

The liemming attachment shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and by making the scroll in two sections of which one has movement: relative to the other it is evident that the scroll can be conveniently opened throughout its length for the removal of the work whenever it is desired to do so by the operator. Whenthe scroll sections are in closed position the scroll has the usual function of turning over the fabric material the same as the ordinary scrolls now in general use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7

A hemmer for sewing machines provided with a scroll divided in the direction of its length to form a base section and a roof section, the base section having a base plate and a turned up side and the roof section terminating at one side in a turnunder plate, the other edge of the roof section forming a continuation of the turnedup side of the base section, and means for moving the sections one relative to the other to open or to close the scroll.

A hemmer for sewing machines provided with a scroll divided lengthwise at the side to form a base section and a roof section, means carrying the roof section and tending to hold the same in open position, and means for moving the roof section, into closed position and holding it locked in said position.

A hemmer for sewing machines, comprising an attaching arm, a scroll divided lengthwise at the side to form a base section and a root section, the basesection being secured to said attaching arm, a spring arm secured to the attaching arm and carrying the said roof section, means for engaging the said spring arm, and a handle for actuating said engaging means and adapted when moved in one direction to cause said engaging meansto engage and press the-spring arm to move the roof section of the scroll into closed position relative to the base section, and when moved in the other direction to release said spring arm to permit the same to move the roof section of the scroll into open position.
