Be itlrnoivn that l, CHARLES E. FULLAM, a citizen of the United States, residing `at Philadelphia in the county of Philadelphia and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Combination Combs and Toothbrushes, ottivhich the' following isa specification.
AThis invention relates to toilet requisites, and it has more particular reference to coinbination tooth brushes and combs, the pril mary object being to providean article of the toregoing type which will be found exceptionally useful Jfor the traveling` public, that is to say, for individuals, Who'are con# stantly changing their stopping places.
. Another object ot `this inventionA is to provide a combinationtooth brush and Vcomb which is ot simple construction, strongv and durable in character,` While of a very efliicient nature in operation; the same being so made that its various parts may be tolded intov a compact torni so as to be capable of neat packingand occupying but little space.
.A further object oit this invention is tov provide a device ot thev 'foregoing specified character characterized by the tact that both the tooth brush and comb are eliectively protected from contamination by dust, `dirt orl tion consists in certain novelfleatures of con-v struction, coinbinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and more specifically defined by the appended ciainis.
In the further disclosure ot' the invention reference is to be had to the accom aan/'ine C drawings constituting a part ot this speciiication, and in which like characters otreiterence designate the same or correspondingJ parts in all the views. y
Figure l-is a partly hi'olienvieiv illustrating one practical embodiment koi my in-y vention, the dotand-dash lines indicatingl the operative position of the comb when in use, the covers or casings for the tooth brushy and comb being` removed.
Figure Q-is a similar vieiv to the pr eeding igure but taken at right angles thereto,
but with the tooth brush and comb covers or casings in place.
Figure B-is an enlarged detail vievv ot la spacing'member and the means for loc-hing; the comb When in the inoperative position. vFigure e-is perspective vietv ot the cover tor the coinb When not in use.
` Figure'i-is a fragmentary enlarged de-Y tailof the end of the comb.
Figure y l-is av perspective view ot' the cover ior the. tooth brush end oit my device; and,
7 Figure '-is a detail perspective view oit a locking' member hereinafter more iully described. l i In accordanceivith the 'form of my invention illustrated the numeral 8 designates an ordinary tooth brush, the handle portion 9 whereof is slightly increased in thickness or enlargechand the same is longitudinally and transversely slotted at l() to provide a forked housing` 'for M a comb ll. This `cut out or longitudinal slot l() has its opposed ends l2, 13 arcuately curved and notched at 14. l5 'fr purposes later on explained. rlhe comb li similarly has its ends arcuately curved at 16,` 17 andsa'id comb is pivoted by pin or" rivet 1S so asto be capable ot swinging through `a semi-circle `trom the'inoperative positionh'shoivn by the full lines in Figure l`ivithin the slot l0 to the dot-and-desle-` oroperativeQ-position indicated on the same figure` lt Will of course be clearly understood that the curved ends i6, l? the comb liand the curved ends l2. 13 of the longitudinal slot 'l0 are of a radius 'from the pivot pin or rivetr 1S such that the comb 1l may :ving treely in. and out ot said. slot lO as later on uily explained. .lit is also here desirable to point outthat the curved end 18 ot the slot 10 is termed in a distance or spacing` block 19 inserted between the nouter forked ends" of the handle portion 9, said block` 19 being` securely riveted or otherwise appropriately fired in place-in the drawings `i have indicated rivet pins 20 as a convenient means. y
The aforesaid comb il is provided at its one end ivithfan oiiisetlug or projection 2i that snugly reposes in the aforementioned notch l5 against the action et a-ilat recoil spring 22 conveniently securedat QB-Fig ure 3-in the spacing block 19; and it will be observed from said Figure 3 that this spring 22 has a limited upward movement due to a stop 24. The function and purpose of this recoil spring 22 is to force or move the adjacent end of the comb 11 from out of' the longitudinal slot so that the latter may be easily gripped by the thumb and lingers and swung on the pivot pin or rivet 13 trom the inoperative to'the operative position as indicated by the dot-and-dash line position in Figure 1, and as will be readily @Orarll'elleneed by. @1105 acquainted with. the.
art to which this invention appertains.I It
is also to be particularly noted that the above 4 mentioned lug or projection 21` seatsl in thev notchlt when thecomb 11 is in usez thereby serving to maintain said comb 1,1 in proper alignment: when in use.
In order to provide a simple and effective means for locking or latohing the, comb 11 in eitherthe inoperative or Operative positions,l I preferably employthe means most clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 7, the same comprising an angularly bent, rod or pin 25 that has fitted or securely mounted thereon a rectangular plunger member 2,6 adapted for sliding movement inthe cut away part 27 of theaforesaid Spacing block 19, a compression spring 28 being" interposed between said plunger; member 26' and the cater end of the cut away' part 27. Thus it will be seen that the rod or pin 2,5v with its connected or. attached plunger member 26 is normally forcedy inwards so, that the headed end 2,9` of saidI pin or rod 25, abuts the outer end of the handle portion 94, while the'inner angularly bent part 30. of the rod or pin is forwardly directedinto engagement with the abutting end of the comb In this connection it will be' seenI that they extreme inner end. ofthe singularly4 bent part @30 is` rounded or pointed at 31 t0 enter or engage in a hole 32-Fignre v5ls-provided'for purpose in the end of the comb4 11, whereby said comb is effectively retained within the longitudinal slot 10 when not in use.k On the'other hand it is also to be particularly noted that 'the aforesaid angularly bentpart 30 is adapted. to latch at the baci;v of the comb 11 when the same is' in use, and due to` the, engagement of the-lug o r projection 21 inthe notch 14; will effectively preventthe comb: from movement on its pivot pin or rivet 18. These4 features I deem. of may Jferial importance as `by their provision the user is enabled to operate orf-use. the device with the full knowledge] that the comb 11 is automatically locked when in either, the operative or inoperative positions In, conjunction with my improved combinedooth brush and comb as just described l provide a cover or a case 33-Figures 2m.
and'. G-for the tooth brush 8 which ismade of suitable material to effectively protect said brushwhen not in use. This cover or case 33 is closed in at one end 34 and it is of a cross-section to compactly and slidingly fit the back 35 and bristles 36 of the brush v8 as will be clearly understood on an examination of the drawings. The open end of the cover or case 33 is litted with a frictiont hinged flap 37 which when closed grips beneath the brush back 35 at 38Figure 2- and thereby prevents its accidental displacement, said hinged flap 37 being provided on its outer face with va nail engageable projection 39 whereby said flap may be released or I nQved to. remove the said case or cover 33. Qbvously the hinged flap 37 may be spring influenced as will be clearly understood by thosev converslant with the art. Similarly there is provided a case or cover lO--Figures 2 and LiE-for the comb end of the device, said case or cover having its one end closed in atl 41 and being of across-section to. slid'- ingly fit over the aforesaid handle portion 9 whenthe Comb 11 is closed therein as herein before explained.
In operating the combination tooth brush and, coinbarld the user desires to clean his or her teeth forexamplje, the hinged flap 37' is outwardly pulled and the case or cover 34; removed so that the brush 8 may be used and manipulated in the ordinary way. Similarly when it isdesired to use the comb 11 the cover or case' 40 is firstly removed, whereupon the knob or headed end' 29 of the rod or pin 25. is outwardly pulled by the finger nails, said movement disconnecting the angularly bent end or part 30 from latching connection in the hole 32; at the endy of: the comb 1l. Instantly upon the release of the aforesaidv latching connection the recoil spring 2 2 will projectthe adjoining end of the numerousadvantages and benefits whereofr asa toiletjarticle for use when traveling` will be self-apparent without, further elucidation or description, while the brush and comb are effectively protected from contamination by dust and thelike.
While there has been described and'shown one practicalv embodiment ofmy invention, the same is not tobe conservatively construed as it will be apparent many detail* changes orvariations may be easily effected without departing from the spirit and scope of said invention as more specifically defined by the subjoined claims.
