Description
IJuly 8, 1930.
F. E. SCHMIDT A BRUSH Filed .April 19, 1929 INVENTOR Frederi/ctE. Schmlf WITNESSES ATTORNEY Patented July 8, 1930 UNITED STATA FREDERICK E. SCHMIDT, GF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BRUSH Application led Apri1 19,
This invention relates to brushes.
It is among the objects of the present invention tov provide a novel and improved folding brush.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a folding brush in which the bristles are adapted to be received when folded within a protecting housing.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a brush including a foldable housing adapted upon extension to act as a handle for the brush.
Other important objects of the present invention include the combination and interrelation of parts whereby the whole forms a novel, simple and improved structure particularly designed to meet the demands of economic manufacture.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the presentinvention will be apparent from a consideration of the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which 'j I Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in Fig. 1 in open position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on lines 3 3 of Fig'. 1'; Y
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view partially in section, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal section. Y
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the invention is shown as embodied in connection with a small hand brush which may be used as a general utility brush. It will be understood, however, that the invention may be used in connection with nail brushes, shoe brushes and hair brushes, or other type of similar implements. It will thus be understood that the invention is not confined to the specific size or type of brush here illustrated.
In the drawings, the hand brush illus-V trated includes a back 10 from which the bristles 11 project. The sides and free edge of the back 1() are suitably beveled as indicated at 12, to form a tight jointkwith respect to the housing, as will be hereinafter described.
1929. Selial N0. 356,563.
The rear end of the back 10 is suitablyk rounded as at 13 and transversely bored as at 14, to receive a hinge pin 15,'which is carried through the sides 16 of a trough-like housing generally indicated at 17.
The preferred embodiment ofthe hinge pin 15 includes the return bent extremity 18,
the end of which is received within a suitable aperture 19` in thefside of the housing V17, thus preventing rotation of the pin with the rotation of the brush thereon.`
Adjacent the rounded portion 13 of the back 10, the sides 16 of the casing 17 are eX- tended upwardly to provide embracing portions 20 which guide the back 10 in its pivotal movement with-respect to the casing 17. Y.
Forwardly of the portion 20, the sides 16 are turned slight-ly outwardly to form a lip 21 which receives the beveled side portions of the back 10 to form locking frictional engagementl therewith, and to guide the fingers when the device is in open position. To permit engagement of a finger with the back'lO to remove the same from the casing 17, the forward edge of the casing is fluted as indicated at 22, thus permitting a gripping by the finger of the free end of the back 10. The fluting 22 is of greatest depth at its center portion as illustrated, whereby the bristles of the brush may be properly ventilated j during the folded position vof the brush, as shown in Fig. 5. V
Considering `the present invention itwill Y be understood that numerous changes and modiications may be resorted to throughout.
Inv one preferred embodiment of the present invention, the casing 17 is formed of aluminum or similar durable metal and the back 10 formed of wood; It is, however, properly within the scope of the present invention that the materials specified herein be wholly departed from and that Celluloid or similar compositions may be used in place of the materials herein suggested;v It will further be understood that the invention is not conned` to the specific mea-ns for retaining the hinge pin 15 against rotation with the brush back and that, if desired, a conventional nut-securing means may be resorted to on either or both extremities of the hinge pin 15,.v To prevent turning of such hinge pin, suitable projections may be provided thereon for engagement with the casing 17. There other Inaterials are used in place of Wood, and expansion and shrinking is avoided, such construction may be preferable.
From the foregoing it Will readily be seen that the present invention provides a simple and eficient structure readily designed for Veconomic manufacture and Which Will provide a neat, simple and compact brush assembly, which when in unfolded position provides a handle for the bristle casing 17.
Numerous changes and modifications throughout may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the appended claim.
lVhat is claimed is:
A brush assembly, including a brush head and bristles, a brush housing pivotally associated with one extremity of said head, said housing including flanged edge portions adapted to guide and receive the head When in folded position, one end of said casing being iiuted to provide for ventilation of the brush head When the casing is in closed position, a pivot pin associated With said casing and extending through said head, and means for preventing rotation of said pin, said means including a return bent eXtremity oi' said pin receivable Within an aperture in said casing. l
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 17th day ot April, A. D. 1929.
FREDERICK E. SCHMIDT.
