HOLDER.
Application filed March 6,
T all whom it may concern Be known that I, STANLEY B T. WORDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county of Bronx, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for containers and more particularly to holders for such collapsible tubular containers as are usually provided for tooth paste, shaving cream, and like substan One of the objects of ildis invention is to provide a simple and practical holderto which a collapsible tube or container may be readily secured and which will permit of an easy and convenient manipulation in manually ejecting the contents of the container. Other objects will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention for purposes of illustration, t
Figure 1 is a plan view, Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in sec tion of a holder illustrative of this invention,
Figures 3 and 4 are respectively right and left hand end views,
Figures 5 and 6 are respectively a view in plan and a side elevation showing a holders as applied to a collapsible tubular container.
Referring to the drawingsand particularly to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a holder comprising a main supporting member 10 made preferably of sheet metal and shaped tocon orm substantially to the contour of a collapsible tubular container 11 as shown in Figures 5 and 6. The main frame member 10 is substantially fiat at its right hand end portion from which it gradually tapers toward its left hand end to a slightly less effective width than the. width at its right hand end. portion. The member 10, in addition to having its effective width decreased slightly in the direction from its right, hand end to its left hand end, is formed into upwardly extending side portions, the member 10 varying in its cross section from substantially a strai ht line at its right hand end to substantial y a semi-- circle at its left hand end. The main member is thus nearly conformed to the contour of a substantial portion of the container 11. At its right hand end the member 10 is provided with up-turned ' llps 12 and 13,
1920. Serial No. 363,735.
stantially 'semi circular in section, there is provided an up-turned end portion 16, more clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4, this end port-ion being .provided at substantially its center with an aperture 17 preferably counter-sunk from the inside to provide a circular knife edge 18. The end member 16 may beg made integrally with the main supporting member 10 or maybe made separately and suitably secured to theend of the member 10 by soldering. or by any convenient method. The end member 16 tapers outwardly from the central portion in which the aperture 18 is made to the semi-circular left hand end portion of the member 10. The taper of'the end portion 16 is preferabl made substantially similar to thetaper o the end portion 19 of the container 11. The main member 10 may be readily stamped out of sheet metal "and formed in the manner hereinbefore described, the lips 12 and 13 being bent inwardly as is more clearly shown in Figure 3. If desired the-righthand end portion of the member 10 may be provided with an aperture 20 which may be made in an ex-.
tension of the member 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter made clear.
The container 11 is of the usual collapsible tubular construction generally provided for substances like-tooth paste, f0 example, and at one end thereof is closed y a clamping member 21 at which end the container 11 tapers down to a substantially flattened end or straight line. Approaching its opposlte end the container 11 gradually tapers into a substantially cylindrical shape at the end of which it terminates in the tapered end portion 19 which in turn terminates in a threaded tubular extension 22 of reduced diameter. The tubular extension 22 provides an exit for the material within the container and upon its threaded portion is adapted to receive a cap 23.
The container 11 is first slightly flattened on the under side to present'a substantially straight line lower edge to conform substantially with the center line of the main supporting member 1Q. The cap 23 is thereupon removed from the container 11 and the container inserted into the holder,
the flattened end portion 21 being inserted under the over-turned lips 12 and 13 whereby the end portion is held in slidable enent. with the main member 10. The container 11 is then moved to the left with respect to the main member-10 to permit the tubular extension 22 to be aligned with the openin or aperture 17 in the end member 16. ovement to the leftwith respect to the main member 10 is thereupon given to the container 11, the threaded tubular extension 22 entering the aperture 17 and the knife edge 18'of the counter-sunk or tapered aperture 17 engaging the threaded portion of the extension 22. The container 11 is thus securely positioned within the holder, the up-turned end portion 16 with its associated apertures 17 and knife edge 18 locking the container 11 against both longitudinal and lateral movement with respect to the holder, itself. The member 10, being conformed or shaped to the contour of the lower or under part of the container 11, provides a substantial support therefor and provides for acontinuous support for the container 11 against which pressure may be exerted to collapse the container- 11 to cause its contents to be emitted from the tubular extension 22. Preferably the pressure is applied first at the right hand or flattened end of the container. and is applied progressively toward the left hand end as the contents of the container is diminished.
In manipulating a collapsible tubular container such as the container 11,.the material .coming out of the tubular extension 22 is oftentimes extended to a greater length than is desired the emission continuing after release of pressure upon the container and in order to prevent the waste of such superfluously emitted material, the container '11 may be depressed at one or both of its lateral portions exposed by the recesses 14 and 15,
such depression causing the flattened end portion to be raised slightly, thus increasing the interior volume of the container. Such increase in volume will be met by a withdrawal by atmospheric pressure into the container 11 of the excessive amount of material extending through the tube 22. The recesses 14 and 15 are preferably made of such dimensions that they will each readily accommodate a fingerof the hand for laterally depressing the flattened end portion of the container.
The cap 23- after use has been made of the holder and container, may be replaced and screwed upon the threaded tubular ex= tension 22, thus not only closing the tube 11 but so securely locking the container to the holder. The holder and its container may thereupon be hung up on a hook or pm which is received by the aperture '20 in the main supporting member 10.
As various possible embodiments may be made in the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
tainer shaped to fit closely against one side of and encase one half of said container,
having inwardly bent lugs at one end for engaging the flattened end of said container permitting relative longitudinal movement while preventing relative lateral movement between said container, and said member and having recesses adjacent said lugs to give access to the edges of the container, said frame member having at, its opposite end an upturned portion .for' interlocking with the threaded extension, substantially as'and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my,
name to this specification this 3rd day of March, 1920.
STANLEY B. T. WORDEN.
