Patented May 2, 1933 WILLIAM KEMPER LIPPERT, F MUNCIE, INDIANA SUEPQRT AND HOLDER Application filed Irlare This invention has especial reference to support and holder devices for collapsible containers such as tubes containing semi plastic material, such as tooth paste.
1 Disadvantages incident to the use of tooth paste tubes are that the tube as well as the closure cap therefor must be handled and rehandled, and the manipulation thereof, and of the tooth brush, is time consuming and in- Q convenient, and moreover, it is not practicable to assure against intrusion upon the tube contents of impurities.
To overcome the said disadvantages and to afford certain improved facilities hereafter mentioned, the general objectof my 1nvention is to provide a support and holder device which. besides supporting the tube firmly and in a convenient position, and retaining same normally stoppered, permits of easy access to the tube contents, and affords facility for obtaining the desired supply quota therefrom for the brush.
More specific purposes of the inventlon are to provide a device of the above description which is economical of construction, easy to use, and. which is durable and dependable and of neat appearance.
The objects of my invention are accomplished. by, and the invention is embodied in the new construction, combination and arrangement of parts. described in the following specification, and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing.
The several parts of the invention are identified by suitable characters of reference applied to them in the different views in the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved supportand holder device.
Figure 2 is a front view, taken in the directon. of arrow 2 in Fi ure 1, the support bar at its apertured portion being shown in cross section.
Figure 3 is a top plan view taken in the direction of arrow 3 in Figure 1.
Figure at is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 in the direction of arrow 4 in Figure 3.

on the line 5--5 in the direction of arrow 0 in Figure 1.
My invention is adaptable for the accommodation of tubes of various sizes, and it may be posi* one to support the tube in upright, or in inverted position, as may be desired. It is shown in the present specification as supportingthe tube in inverted position.
The invention broadly stated, consists of a bracket having a support arm provided with an aperture in which the neck of the tube is held, a lever fulcrumed on said bracket and having a stopper thereon to register with and to close the mouth of said neck when the said lever is moved to advanced position, and means between the bracket and the lever to retain the latter in its bearings and to yieldably stay it in either the advanced, or in the retracted position.
The bracket may be of cast or sheet metal, the former being preferred. Its body por tion is of the form of a housing having opposed side walls 1, and integrally formed lateral external flanges 2. Integral with the inner faces of each of the walls are bosses 3. At the lower edge of each of the side walls is a recess fl, having a rounded bearing face 5. Upon the underside of the top 7 of said housing, is a lug 8 having eye 9. A frontal wall 10 which extends downwardly a suitable distance, constitutes a neat frontal closure of the housing.
A forwardly extended support arm 12 is provided with an aperture 13, having beveled edge 14. This aperture, as shown in the plan view in Figure 3 is ovate in formation, it being thereby adapted to receive tube necks of various sizes. In a suitably threaded bore of the head portion 15 of the said support arm is retained a binding screw 16. This screw is adapted to be turned by the user when fastening a tube in position, and it may be provided with a head 17 of the circular knurled type shown.
A lever 18, flat in cross section formation, is bifurcated at its rear portion, there being thus provided a. clearance space 19 between the sides 20 of said lever, as shown in Figure 5. Opposed integrally formed journals 21 project from the sides of the said lever. 22 109 designates a hole in said lever, as shown in Figure 5. At the anterior or front portion of said lever is secured a stopper 23. The free or forward end of said lever is so fashioned as to provide a finger push 24. The said stopper may consist of a piece of rubber, of suitable formation in cross section, and of dimension in plan to accommodate tube necks of any diameter within the limitation of the diameters of the aperture 13. The said stopper is secured in place by having its bottom portion sprung into the beveled edge aperture 26 provided therefor in said lever. This stopper combined with the lever mounted as described, lends itself especially well to the stoppering of the mouth of the tube regardless of the plane of the mouth of the tube. By virtue of the peculiar position and combination of the parts, an efiective stoppering is had, with a minimum amount of tension.
A helical spring 28 whose hook ends are attached to the eyelet openings 9 and 22, in the top of the housing and in the lever 18 respectively, serves to retain the lever in the assembled status shown, with its journals 21 in bearing engagement with the recesses-e and bearings 5. At the same time the stopper is stayed firmly at the raised position. The eyes 9 and 22 are in such position with relation to the position of the journals 5, that whereas the spring 28 functions to draw the lever 18 to, and to hold it normally at the raised status, it also functions to permit of he lever being swung downwardly. The sides 20 of the lever come to rest against the bosses 3, and in this position the lever is stayed by the spring 28 against being returned to raised status, except when the lever is moved by the user.
\Vhereas I have shown a practical form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, I wish it to be understood that minor changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principle of the invention.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A support and holder device of the kind described, comprising a bracket having an aperture therein in which the neck of a tube may be reposed and held, a lever fulcrumed on said bracket and having a stopper thereon to close the mouth of the said neck when the said lever is in the advanced position, bosses on the said bracket to limit the measure of retractive movement of the said lever, and a spring between the bracket and the lever to retain the latter in operative connection with the bracket, and to yieldingly hold it in either the advanced or the retracted position.
2. A device of the kind described, consisting of a housing having a forwardly extended arm provided with an aperture in which a tube neck may be received and retained, the said housing having opposed side walls provided with external flanges, and there being opposed recesses in the bottoms of said side walls, and the said side walls being provided at their interior upper portions with integrally formed bosses, a lever bar having integrally formed laterally disposed journals to engage said recesses, and its inner end being bifurcated to provide a clearance space between its sides, a stopper on the outer portion of said lever to register with the aperture in said bracket arm, and a retractive spring, having its one end connected to the lever at a point to the front of the axis of said journals, and its other end connected to the upper part of the housing at apoint to the rear of the axis of said journals.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
W. KEMPER LIPPERT.
