UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,133,754 COLLAPSIBLE TUBE COMPRESSOR Harry Oscar, New York, N. Y.
Application December 4, 1937, Serial No. 178,036
Claims. (Cl. 221-60) This invention relates to devices for dispensing approximately on line 4-4 of Figure 2, but show.- the contents of collapsible containers, with speing the lever grip as in position for operation.

Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the
In order to discharge a desired quantity of the numeral l5 designates a conventional type of substance in the tube pressure should be applied collapsible tube, having an outlet or discharge 15 at the seamed end and gradually advanced as nozzle is, provided with a removable cap 11. the contents become utilized. The tube is usually filled with plastic material Squeezing the tube by hand haphazardly is entered through the bottom, then open and cylinlikely to cause its wall to break, and invariably drical in shape; after filling this lower end is fiatleads to loss of the contents which remain therein tened, presenting two opposed sides which are 20 after the distorted appearance of the tube indipressed firmly into engagement, as at l8, seamed cates that it is empty. in the usual manner to produce a hermetically While it is known that devices have been desealed joint extending straight across the tube signed to engage the folded, seamed and closed approximately, at its center, and may be turned end of such tubes, mostly in the form of a key upon itself to form a hem-like terminal. 25 on which the tube is progressively coiled as the The invention comprises a pair of thin, but contents are expelled, such devices have certain rigid, plates 20, adapted to clamp the seamed objectionable features, one of which is the difielements I8 between them and are securely held culty of operation, due to lack of leverage on the thereon by indentations 2| whereby the seam is turning handle; another noted objection is that firmly gripped. 30 such devices, by reason of theirv shape and size, As will be seen, the upper edges of the clamp seriously interfere with compact packing of the plate extend only to the flattened portion of the tubes in their customary cartons. seam, while their lower edges are integrally con- Having the matter in mind, it is an object of nected by a tubular sheath 22, which, like the the invention to provide a compression device, clamp plates, extend the full length of the seamed 35 applied at the closed end of the tube, and on portion of the tube 15. which it may be progressively, tightly coiled, the The sheath 22 is provided with a straight nardevice having a slidable handle element aifording rovv slot 23, preferably in its wall, opposite the an effective grip when extended for use, and clamp plates, and slidable in the sheath is a IOd thereafter retracted to occupy no material space. 25 having intermediate its length a flattened 40 ThiS and other advantageous purposes are nodule 2B, struck outwardly to slidably engage in accomplished by the novel construction and arthe Slot which limits itsfiliding movement and rangement of few and Simple parts hereinafter also transmits rotary mot1on to the sheath when described and illustrated in the accompanying the rod is turned The rod 25 is bifurcated at one end portion drawmg constltutmg mammal component of and is pivoted on apin 21. When the element 28 is turned to extend into Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken the rod, the head 29 only reaches beyond the de- 55 vice, but when the rod is drawn outwardly, and the handle turned at a right angle, an eilective leverage is obtained whereby the tube may be readily compressed and its contents forcibly delivered at the nozzle l6, as indicated in Figure 3.
In the modification, shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8, the tube seam I8 is enclosed between plates 30 one of which, in this case, is provided with inreaching clips 31 slidable along depressed longitudinal trackways in the seam.
The plates are integrally connected at their lower edges by a tubular sheath 32 in which is a slidable rod 33 provided with a handle 34 by which the mandrel, thus formed acts as a nucleus for the collapsible tube as it is wound thereon.
In this type of clamp coiling mandrel the sheath is reduced at one end to receive the head of the rod 33, turned into the position shown in Figs. '7 and 8, to avoid occupying excess space in the carton in which the tube is packed.
In the modified form seen in Figure 10, the same arrangement of clamp plates is used, but the sheath includes two portions 40 and M, of different cross sectional area, the smaller 40 being receptive of a rod 42 having an enlarged square rear portion 43, fitting the section 4|, thereby limiting the withdrawal of the rod and providing for rotation.
The lever 44, pivoted in the reduced portion of the rod, is provided with an enlarged head 45 as previously described.
It will be understood that the rods and sheaths in any of the views shown may be of any cross section, as round, square or otherwise, and of such dimensions as are suited to their purpose.
While certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A collapsible tube compressor comprising rigid plates secured on opposite sides of the closed end of the tube, a sheath integrally connecting the lower edges of said plates, a slotted rod limitedly slidable in said sheath, and a finger grip lever pivoted in the slot of said rod.
2. A collapsible tube compressor comprising clamp plates on the closed end of the tube, a sheath connecting the bottom edges of said plates, a coiling key slidable in said sheath, and means limiting the inward and outward movement of said key, said means also operative to transmit rotary motion.
3. A collapsible tube compressor comprising a metal blank shaped to produce a straight cylindrical sheath having a longitudinal slot in the wall thereof intermediate its ends, said sheath having a lengthwise opening, plates integral with the edges of the sheath opening and extending in parallel to receive the closed end of a collapsible tube therebetween, means for rigidly securing said plates to the tube end, a rod slidable in said sheath, said rod bifurcated at one end, a finger grip pivoted in the bifurcated end, said grip having a circular head at least equal to the outer diameter of the sheath, and a lug on said rod operable in the slot of said sheath.
4. A collapsible tube compressor comprising a clip, a cylindrical sheath combined with said clip, a rod telescopically contained in said sheath, said rod limited in its movement, a lever-like handle pivoted in said rod, and a head on said] handle by which the rod may be drawn outwardly and retracted.
5. A collapsible tube compressor comprising a clip fixed on the sealed end of the tube, a cylindrical sheath combined with said clip, a handle slidable in said sheath and means to limit longitudinal movement of said handle.
HARRY OSCAR.
