NETE@ JOHN L. DICKINSON, OF DETROIT, MCHIGAN, ASSGNOR TO THE LAURENCE SMITH PAPER GOODS COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHGAN, A CORPORATION 0F VICHGAN.
ENVELOPE.
Application `filed February 28, 1921. Serial No. 448,456.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOHN L. Dickinson, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to envelopes and refers particularly to double pocket envelopes having separate compartments for holding merchandise, correspondence, or the like. The invention has'for its object the provision of a simple form of one-piece blank forming the envelope and having the novel features of construction as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of a blank, which; when folded, produces an envelope embodyinmy invention;
igure 2 is a plan view showing the blank folded and ready for filling;
Figure 3 is a perspective view thereof.
l is a blank of substantially rectangular form comprising the main parts 2 and 3 which are connected end to end and are adapted to be folded upon the transverse folding line 4. The main part 2 has the side flaps 5 which are adapted to be folded inwardly and have the gummed surfaces 6 for securing the side edges of the main part 3 to the main part 2 when these parts are folded upon the folding line 4. The main part 2 also has the end liap 7 which is adapted to be folded upon the free end of the main part 3 when the latter is secured to the side flaps 5 and is suitably secured to this main part as by means of the gummed surface 8 at the outer edge of the end flap.
To form a double envelope, the main parts 2 and 3 have respectively the transverse folding lines 9 and 10 which register with each other when the main parts are folded upon the folding line if, and the main part 2 has the transversely extending elongated opening 11 therein extending on opposite sides of the folding line 9. This opening l1 provides access to the two compartments formed between the ends of the main parts 2 and 3. The surface of the main part 2 adjacent to the folding line t is provided with suitable securing means 12, as by being gumined, for fastening the same to the portion of this main part at the opposite side of the opening 1l when the folded or adjacent main parts are folded upon the folding lines 9 and 10.
With this arrangement, a double envelope is secured for retaining under seal. the contents of the two pockets, one of which, however, may be opened through an end fold without disturbing the matter contained in the other pocket.
Vlhat I claim as my invention is:
1. ein envelope comprising a one-piece blank with a transverse folding line between the ends thereof, and a pair of transverse folding lines at opposite sides of said first-mentioned folding line and registering when the blank is folded upon said firstmentioned folding line, means for securing the edges of the blank to each other when folded upon said first-mentioned folding line, an aperture in the blank adjacent to one of said second-mentioned folding` lines, and means for securing the portions of 'the folded blank to each other when folded upon said second-mentioned folding lines.
2. An envelope comprising a one-piece blank having a transverse folding line intermediate its ends forming two main parts adapted to be folded upon each other and secured together at their edges, said parts having transversely extending folding lines registering with each other when said parts are folded upon said first-mentioned folding line, and One of said parts having a transverse opening therein near its folding line, and means for securing the free end of said last-mentioned part to the portion thereof at the opposite side of its folding line.
3. An envelope comprising a one1 3iece blank having a transverse folding line with two main parts folded upon each other, side flaps upon one of said main parts secured to the other of said main parts, an end flap upon one of said main parts adapted to be secured over the other of said main parts, one of said main transversely extending aperture therein intermediate .its ends, and the other of said main parts having a transversely extending folding line registering with said aperture, and securing means upon the outer surface of said main part provided with the transversely extending opening and adjacent to said first-mentioned folding line for securparts having a ing the portions of said main part on opposite sides of said opening to each other.
Il. An envelope comprising a one-piece blank adapted to be folded on a transverse folding line7 and having registering ltrans-v versely extending folding lines and/an elongated opening therein adjacent to one of said last-mentioned folding lines, the surface of the blank adjacent to the first-mentioned transverse folding line and on the side provided with the transverse opening being gummed to secure the saine to the portion of the blank on the opposite side of the opening when the folded blank'is folded on said registering folding lines.
5. An envelope having separate pockets and Comprising' a one-piece blank provided With an opening intermediate its ends and positioned between the adjacent edges of said pockets, said pockets being foldable upon each other to close said opening, the opposite sides of said envelope being continuous.
6. An envelope having separate pockets and comprising a one-piece blank provided iprising a one-piece blank having an opening intermediate its ends to provide separate pockets, said pockets being folda'ble upon each other to close said opening.
8. An envelope open at one end comprisn 'ino' a one-3iece blank havino' an oaenino' b b b.
intermediate its ends to provide separate pockets, said pockets being `foldable upon eaeh other to close said opening, and means for Closing the open end of said envelope.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature.
