DUPLEX ENVELOPE.

The object of my present invention is to provide an envelope having two separate pockets, oneof which is capable of being securely sealed and adapted to receive postal matter of the first class, and the second of said pockets is adapted to receive ,bulky matter, such for instance, as circulars or Catalogues mailable at a lesser rate than first class matter. v I accomplish this result in the manner hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents a blank, shown in its extended form, from which my improved envelope is `folded.

The blank from which my envelope is constructed, as represented in Fig. 1, consists of a body portion 1, having at one end a closing flap 2 and at the opposite end an end flap 3 having a gummed portion 4. On one side of`the body portion 1 I provide a side flap 5, substantially the same width as the body portion 1, and on the opposite side of the body portion I provide a side flap 6, provided with a, gummed surface 7 on its outer longitudinal side, and having near its center a narrow gummed surface 8 extending transversely across the side flap. The` side flap 6 is preferably provided with a window opening 9 above the gummed surface 8 and parallel with the edge of the folded envelope. The side flap 5 is` provided with a seal flap 10, having on its reverse side a gummed surface 11.

In the operation of folding, the side flap 5 is folded on the dash and dot line 12 upon the body portion 1. The side flap 6 is next folded on the dash and dot line 13 upon the side flap 5, to which, it adheres by means of the med surfaces 7 and 8. The end flap 3 is next folded upon the dash and dot line 14 upon the side flaps 5 and 6, completing the envelope which is represented in Fig. 2 in which the body portion 1 and side flap 5 form a pocket for second class matter, and the side flap 7 and the side fiap 5 form a pocket for first class matter.

The pocket for first class matter is securely scaled by the scaling flap 10, the adhesion of the side flap 7 to the side flap 5, as indicated by the broken lines 15' and 16, forming the bottom of the pocket for first class matter, which is preferably so folded that the address will be disclosed through the window opening 9. The pocket for second class matter is closed by the flap 2, which may be tucked in or otherwise secur'ed in any suitable and well known manner.

In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a slight modification in the form of the blank, in

which 17 denotes the body portion of the envelope, having at one end a closing flap 18, and at the opposite end an end flap 19 provided with a gummed surface 20. Upon one 'side of the body portion 17 I provide a side upon the dash and dot line 26 to bring the side flap 21 over the'body portion 17. The side flap 22 is next folded on the dash and dot line 27 over the side flap 21, to which it adheres by means of the gummed surfaces 23 and 24. The end flap 19 is next folded upon the-side flap 22, to which it adheres by means of the gummed surface 20. The side flap 21 is providedwith a sealing flap 28, having upon its reverse side a gunmed surface 29. When the blank has been folded, it will assume the form shown in Figure 4, in which a pocket for first class matter will be formed between the two side flaps, with the bottom of the pocket indicated by the broken -lines 30 and This pocket may be securely scaled by the gummed scaling flap28, and with the address upon the inclosure disclosed through the window opening 25. The

' pocket for second class matter will be formed between the body portion 17 and the side flap 21, and may be closed by the flap 18, which may be tucked in or Secured in any other suitable manner., The bottom of the pocket for second class matter will be closed by the gunmed flap 19, when the blank shown in F ig. 3 is used. When the blank shown in Fig. 1 is used, the pocket for second class matter will be closed bythe end flap 3,

I am aware tha-t duplex envelopes have been he'etofore used and I do not claim such broadly, but what I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A double conpartnent envelope comprising a blank having a bodyportion, a relatively large side flap cxtcnding from one edge of said body portion and folded over said body portion to provide a relatively large compartnent between said large flap and body portion, said large? flap being approximately equal in length and -width to said body portion, a relatively small side flap 'extending from said body portion `at the edge opposite to the first mentioned edge,

said small side flap being folded over said large side flap to'p'ovide a second compartment directly between said sde flaps, the two compartments having 'one common boundary line, said small side flap having a said small side flap so as to forn' a closure for said second compartment, and a nonneuem-r scaling closure fiapextending from the upper edge of 'said body portion to form a clo-. sure for said relatively large conpartnent.

2. A double compartment envelope comprising a blank having a body portion, a relatively large side flap extending from one edge of said body portion and folded over said body portion to provide a relatively large compartment between said largefiap and body portion, said large flap being approximately equalin length and width to said body portion, a relatively small side flap extending from said body portion at the edge opposite' to the first nentioned edge, said small side flap being folded'over said large side flap to provide a' second Compartment directly between said side flaps, the two eompartments having onecommon boundary line, said small side flap having a gummed margin .sealed to the outer face of said large side flap in a line between and parallel to said edges, said ,small flap being provided with an aperture forming a window through which an address may be exposed in said second conpartment, an end flap extending from the lower edge of said body portion and sealed to the outefaces of both of said side flaps, a gummed sealing flap extending from the upper edge of said large side flap and foldable over said small side flap, the length of said gummed sealing fla being approximately equal to the width ofsaid small side flap so as to form a closure for 'sad second compartment, and a non-scaling closure flap extending from the upper edge of said body portion to form a closure for said relatively large compartnent.
