Be it known that I, CHARLEs E. CATHER, n citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double Envelo s, of which the following, together with t e accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a double envelop, or two envelops integrally connected, one of which may be adapted to contain an inclosure requiring first-class postage, and the other envelop adapted to recelve an inclosure requiring only second or third-class postage. In transmitting second or third-class matter through the mails it is desirable that the envelop containing the same should be of unusual strength, as the inclosures are freuently bulky and of considerable weight. he envelop containing first-class matter should referably be of that type known as an out ook envelop, or an envelop having a window o ning through which an address upon tli inclosure may be read, and thereby serve as the address of both envelops.

I am aware that it has heretofore been pro sed to provide a double envelop whereby inclosures subject to different postal rates may be contained in separate wrappers which are connected together to avoid the liability of their separation durin their transmission through the mails. y means of my present invention I materially strengthen the envelop containing the second or thirdclass matter, I provide a window opening by which an address upon the first-class matter may be easily read, and I preferably place the first-class envelop u n the back of the other envelop, leaving t e face of the latter free to receive an address, thereb providing the address u on both sides, faci itating the sorting and lstribution of the mail.

In the accompanying drawin Figure 1 represents a blank in extended form from which my improved double envelop is made.

Referring to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the body portion of the blank provided on one side with a side flap 2, and on the opposite side with a narrow side flap fl. Said folding operation consists in turning over the side flap 2 upon the body portion 1, thereby bringing the gummed surface 7 uppermost. The narrow side fiap 3 is then folded upon the gummed surface 7, as represented in Fig. 2. Adhesive material is then applied in strips 10, 11, and 12, transversely to the folded blank, as represented in Fig. 2.

The partially folded blank is then folded upon the transverse broken line 13 upon the gummed strips 10, 11 and 12, thereby bringing the gummed surface 14 of the sealing flap 6 and also the window opening 5 uppermost. By these folds, as described, two envelops are formed, the larger envelop represented at 15, Fig. 3, and the smaller represented at 16, laid upon the back side of the envelop 15. Suitable means are then applied to secure the closing flap 4, which in the present instance comprises a metallic fastener 17 provided with bendable prongs 18, 18, which are inserted through an opening 19 in the closing flap 4.

The method of attaching the closing flap 4 to the body of the envelop forms no part of my present invention, and any suitable known device may be employed for that purpose. The bottom of the envelop 15 is closed y the act of folding upon the broken line 13, thereby forming `an integral bottom for the envelop 15. In using the envelop bulky material of the second or third-class is inserted in the envelop 15 which is then closed by the detachable closing flap 4. Other matter subject to first-class postage is then placed in the envelop 16, which is sealed by the gummed flap 6, the address upon said inclosure being alined with the window opening 5 and serving as an address for both envelops upon the back side of the?, envelop 15.
