Applicationfiled February 3, 191-4. Serial No. 816,260.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAMON REY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsboro and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Cigar-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper cigar cases,
' and has for its object to produce a package of this kind which will be more etlicient in use, and less costly to construct than those heretofore proposed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar case made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a' cross sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my case, showing the cover partially opened; Fig. at is a plan view of the blank out of which the body portion of my case is formed; Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank out of which the cells of the case shown in F ig. 1 are formed; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention; Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. 6; and Fig. 9 is a plan view of a blank out of which the outer walls of the package shown in Fig. 6 may be formed.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 5, especially to Fig. 4 I provide a blank composed of the parts 1 and 2 and joined or hinged together by the'member 3. The portion 1 of my blank is provided with the weakened lines 4: and 5 providing the side flaps 6 and 7, and the main wall portion 8 which latter is provided with the open slits 9 which are conveniently covered by transparent material and through which the cigars may be seen. The portion 2 of my blank forms the cover wall of the package and is conveniently provided with the pointed extensions 10 as shown. The members 1 and 2 of my blank are integral with the hinged member 3 which is separated therefrom by the weakened lines 11 and 1'3 respectively. The member 3 is also provided with the extensions 13 and 14- adapted to fold on the weakened line 15 and 16 respectively. The member 1 of my blank 15 also provided with the individual closing flaps 18 provided with the securing means 19 adapted to be pasted to the walls of the package as .Will be readily understood.
' The blank from which the individual cells 20 are formed, as shown in Fig. 5 is provided with the weakened lines 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 2e, 27, 2s, 29, 30, s1, s2, 33, and 34 forming the flaps 35 and 36, as well as the walls 37,38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 40, 17, 48 and 19. The blank thus formed is next so folded as to form the cells 20, and is pasted to the member 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 4 so as to form the construction illustrated in Fig. 2. That is to say the flap 35 is secured to the blank member 2,
the wall 37 of the cell blank extending in a direction perpendicular to the wall 2, while the wall 38 of the cell blank extends in a direction parallel to the wall 2,'and the cell wall 39 is curved as shown to form the cell 20 which is open along its side as at 50. The wall 39 thus forming the cell 20 next joins the wall 40 which is integral with the next cell wall 11, etc. By this means a plurality of curved open sided cells 20 are formed and secured to the member 2 of the blank shown in Fig. 4. The bottom ends of the cells 20 are closed by the member 3 of the blank when the package is in its closed position and the member 1 of the blank folds to and from its closed position as a cover, the slits being so pasted as to register with the iongitudinal openings 50 of the cells 20, all as i will be clear from Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. Of course the openings 9 may be closed by the usual transparent material, and the side flaps 6 and 7 are adapted to fit on the outside of the walls 49 and 37 respectively as shown, when the package is closed. The integral closing flaps 1.8 for the top of the cells' are conveniently closed over said cells and the tabs 19 integral with the said flaps 18 are conveniently pasted down onto the wall 2 in order to secure the package closed. The extensions 10011 the blank member 2 and the similar extensions 60 on the cell blank serve to close the spaces 61 and 62 between the curved cell walls as Will be readily understood. The extensions 13 and 14 on the member 3 are ada ted to fold up parallel to the cells 20 as ilustrated in Fig. 3 and thus serve to keep the package air tight.
Coming'now, to the modified form of, my invention shown in Figs. 6m 9 and especially referring to Fig. 9 I provide a blank composed of the two main members 65 and 66 joined by the hinging member 67 as shown.
. The member 65 is provided with the slits 68 and the member 66 is provided-with the slits 69. The member, 65 is further provided with the flaps 70 and 72 and the main body portion 71, as well as with the closing flap 7 3. In this modified form of my invention I prefer not to attach the cells to the blank shown in Fig. 9,but to employ said blank as an inclosure or wrapper for the cells. That is to say I provide a separate piece of'paper and score it in a manner substantially like the blank shown in Fig. 5, and beginning with the flap 75, Fig. 7, the materialis so bent as to form the straight'wall 76 the straight wall 77, the curved or cell wall 7 8, then another straightwall 79 and another curved cell wall 80 and so on until a straight wall 81 in all respects similar to the straight wall 76 is roduced and a 121 82 in all respects similar to the flap 751s produced.
1' To the flap 82 I paste the straight wall 83 of another, blank, form it into the straight wall 84, the curved or cell wall 85, another straight wall 86 and another curved or cell wall 87, and so on until astrai ht wall 88 "dis formed which is pasted to t e straight wall 75. By this means I form a plurality. of cells 89 placed'back to back and each having open sides 90 in all respects similar to the open sided cells shown in Fig. 2. The
slits'68 of he blank member 65 shown in Fig. 9, are so located as to re "ster with the open sides 90 of one set 0 cells and. the slits 69 of the blank member 66 shown in Fig.9 are so located as to register with the open sides 90 of another set of cells. The bottom ends of the nest of'open sided cells thus formed rest upon the hinged 'connecting member 67 and said member is provided with a plurality of circular closing flaps 92 which serve as individual closing 95' may be pasted to the flap members for the cells 89. Each of these flaps 92 "are further provided with closing tabs 93 which may be pasted to the member 65 and 66 as will be clear from Fig.6. The
closing flap 7 3 integral with the member 65 is provided with the extensions 94 and the fastening member 95 as will be clear from the drawings. These said extensions 94 fit on the outside of the member 65 as will be clear from Fig, 6 and the fastening member 66 as will be likewise clear from the drawings. With the package thus produced the user may with said cellsso the latter will close up his thumb nail remove one. or more of the tabs 93 and thus open the individual cells for the extraction of the cigars or he may remove the tab 95 and'open out all of the cells and in fact in this last mentioned instance unfold the wrapper or blank shown in Fig. 9 from the nest of open sided cells 89 disclosed in Fig. 7.
It will be observed that my substantially round open sided cells 20, being made of sheet material haveyielding side edges 50 the opening between which may be enlarged or contractedp This is an important feature of my invention, for it is well known that cigars are not of a uniform size, and that it is very desirable to incase them in cylindrical cells, but that'when the walls of said cells are rigid or unyielding and the parting from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above diselosure,.exoept as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a cigar container the combination of outer containing walls; a combined hing ing and closing member integrally joined to said walls; an additional closing member integrally joined to one of said walls; side in; closing flaps also integral with said last mentioned Wall; and a plurality of cells open at each end and at their sides throu h- 'out'thei'r lengths connected with said 0t er wall; one open end of each cell adapted to be opened and closed by said hinging member, substantially as. described.
2. Ina clgar container the combination of outer containing walls provided with transparent openings; a combined hinging and closing member provided with individual cell closing means integrally joined to said walls; an additional closing member integrally joined to one of said walls; side inclosing flaps also integral with said last mentioned wall; and a plurality of cells open at their sides throughout their length associated with said other wall, substantially as described. v
3. Ina clgar container the combination of a blank comprising two members, one of which is provided with a'wall having transparent openings; side flaps integral with said member; individual cell closin flaps integral with said member;a combine hing-.

ing and closing member integral with both members of said blank and provided with end extensions; and aplurality of open ended cells adapted to be closed at one end by said cell closing flaps and at their other end by said hinging member; said cells open at their sides throughout their length, and said transparent openings registering with said open sides, substantially as described. 4. In a cigar container the combination of an outer wall; a substantially round open sided and open ended cell having flexible walls secured to said first named wall; a closure for one end of said cell; a flap like cover for the open side of said cell; and acombined hinging and closing means for the other end of said cell joining said wall and cover, substantially as described.
5. A cigar container comprising a substantially round open sided and open ended cell having flexible walls adapted to be separated to admit cigars of diflerent sizes; a closure for one end of said cell; a flap like closure for the open side ofsaid cell; and a combined hinge and closure for the other end of said cell integral with said flap, substantially as described.
