J. IKEDA AND M. MIURA. TWOFOLD ENVELOPE 0R DOUBLE ENVELOPE. APPLICATION HLED FEB.12, 191s. RENEWED MAR. s. 1922.

J'UIGHI IKEDA AND MASASHI MIURA, OIE KOBE, JAPAN.
TWOFOLD ENVELOPE OR DOUBLE ENVELOPE.
Application filed February 12, 1918, Serial No. 216,764. Renewed March 8, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, JUroHr IKEDA' and MAsAsHr MIURA, subjects of the Emperor of J apan, and residents of Kobe Empire of Japan, have jointly invented a new and useful Two-F old Envelope or Double Envelope of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved envelope in which there is provided two chambers or compartments for the reception of enclosures, each compartment or chamber being provided with the separate sealing flaps thus permitting the mouth of one compartment to be closed and sealed prior to the closure of the mouth of the other compartment.
Another object is the provision of a double envelope of this type in which the open mouths of the respective compartments or chambers are disposed in contiguous relation and the sealing flaps therefor are correspondingly disposed for convenience in manipulation.
With these and other objects in View as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the blank from which the improved envelope is constructed.
Figures 2 to 6 represent plan views of the envelope showing the various stages in the formation thereof, and
Figure 7 represents a top plan view of the completed envelope sealed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the letters D and I indicate the front and intermediate or partition pieces, respectively. The intermediate piece I is proided with opposed side flaps H and J and the front piece D is provided with laterally opposed wide flaps E and C. The flaps E and J and the flaps C and H at the opposed sides of the front and intermediate pieces are divided by substantially V-shaped slits defining substantial triangular reinforcing pieces F and Gr and the outer terminals of the side flaps H and J are provided with the supplementary sealing flap sections K.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1922.
Serial No. 542,163.
The terminal of the piece D opposite the intermediate piece I is provided with a main sealing flap B and disposed adjacent thereto is the relatively narrow sealing tab A which is carried by the terminal of one of the back flaps E.
The several parts of the envelope are designed to be folded along the lines indicated by dotted lines in Figures 1 to 3 and the several parts are preferably folded to form the completed envelope in the following order. First the reinforcings F and G are folded inwardly across the line of fold between the pieces D and I so as to reinforce the envelope structure at this point and the side flaps H and J are subsequently folded upon the intermediate piece I, said flaps H and J being of such width that the longitudinal edges thereof lie in overlapping relation and are secured together by a suitable adhesive composition so as to provide an envelope or compartment. The intermediate piece I and side flaps H and J which have been folded thereon are subsequently folded against the inner surface of the piece D along the line represented by the dotted line intersecting the longitudinal axes of the triangular reinforcing members F and G. The back flaps E and C are subsequently folded upon the intermediate piece I and the flaps are secured together along their overlapped edges and are also preferably secured to the intermediate piece I at the portions remote from the flaps K and B in order that the latter may be inserted under the unsecured portions of the back flaps C and E and between the latter and the intermediate piece I, subsequent to the insertion of such material as it is desired to enclose within the several compartments or chambers of the envelope. Prior to sealing the flaps K and B access may be readily had to the compartments or chambers defined between the front piece D and the flaps H and J and between the flaps H and J and the intermediate piece I, the mouths of the respective compartments or chambers being disposed in contiguous relation as are also the sealing flaps B and K. Subsequent to insertion of the several sealing flaps the sealing tab A is folded so as to overlie the front face of the front piece D, as shown in Figure 7 and the envelope is sealed so as to prevent tampering with the contents thereof by unauthorized persons by securing the tab A either directly to the front piece D or by a postage stamp or other seal applied to the tab and front face of the piece D.
WVe claim:
In a blank for a double envelope comprising a front piece, a piece connected therewith forming anintermediate partition When folded, side flaps carried by the front and partition pieces, the side flaps of the partition piece being foldable thereon, spaced supplemental closure flaps carried by the lower free edges ofthe side flaps of the said partition, triangular, overlapping reenforcing side portions between the flaps of the front and intermediate pieces, a main closure flap carried by the free edge of the front piece, the partition piece being foldable to dispose the side flaps thereof against the inner face of the front piece, the flaps of the partition piece dividing the interior flaps of the front piece, and a sealing tabs carried by the upper free edge of one of the side flaps of the front piece adapted to be folded across the closure flaps and upon the front face piece to prevent opening of the main and supplementary closure flaps.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures hereto.
