Application September 23, 1957, Serial No. 685,467 3 Claims. (Cl. 229-72) This invention relates to envelopes and more particularly to a multiple compartment mailing envelope.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a multiple compartment mailing envelope having one compartment for receiving an automobile license tag and another compartment for receiving an automobile registration card so that both the tag and card may be mailed simultaneously with the registration card being so supported as to provide the mailing address for the envelope.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a multiple compartment mailing device of the above type that is formed from a single blank of envelope material and which has self-contained sealing means for both compartments so that the envelope may be formed, closed, and sealed with a minimum number of steps.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a mailing device bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which: I

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a blank for forming an envelope in accordance with the present invention.

In accordance with the present invention, a multiple compartment mailing device is provided in the form of a preformed blank having pre-arranged longitudinal and transverse crease lines for defining predetermined panels and tabs that may be folded in a predetermined manner to provide a large main compartment for receiving the automobile license tag, and a supplemental smaller compartment for receiving the registration card which is visible through a provided window opening so as to serve as a mailing address for the envelope.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a blank of envelope material is provided with spaced parallel longitudinally extending fold lines 12, 13, which define a centrally disposed back panel 15, a front panel 16 at one side, and a front closure 18 at the opposite side. The back panel is also provided with a pair of spaced parallel transversely extending crease lines 20, 21 which define end tabs 22, 23 each of which is provided with an adhesive material on one surface thereof. Various adhesive strips 24 are applied to the same side of the front closure 18 except for a central blank area that has a window opening 26 (Fig. 4). The free side of the front closure 18 is provided with an outwardly extending pull tab 28 that is foldable about a longitudinally extending fold line 29 and which is in proximity with the blank area defined by the adhesive thereon.

In assembly, the front panel 16 is folded over to the operative position 16a, as shown in Fig. 3. The various adhesive strips 24 on the front closure 18 are then applied and the front closure 18 rotated to the closed position 18a into engagement with the outer surface of the front "ice panel 16a, whereupon the adhesive strips 24 will secure the front panel and front closure together. End tab 22 is then folded about crease line 20, with the adhesive applied thereon. The license tag is then inserted through the other remaining open end and end tab 23 is then folded about crease line 21 with the adhesive thereon moistened, into enclosing engagement with the adjacent outer surfaces of the front panel 16a and the frontclosure 18a to the operative positions 22a, 23a. This completely seals the license tag within the main compartment formed by the respective panels. The registration card 30 is then slipped into the pocket formed by the front panel and front closure as defined by the blank area of the adhesive so that the address thereon is visible through the window opening 26. The pull tab 28 is then folded inwardly about its crease line 29 to the closed position 28a wherein it retains the card 30 therein.

It will be noted (Fig. 4) that one of the strips 24a is of reduced length, providing an outwardly tapered side to the pocket whereby to facilitate insertion and removal of the registration card.

A latex or rubber application 40 may be included to secure the card within the pocket, as will be obvious.

The lower edge 41 of window 26 is of oval, downwardly, enlarged shape to prevent this lower edge from catching on the card as the latter is inserted.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. An envelope comprising an elongated back panel, a first front panel of the same longitudinal dimension as said back panel and of slightly less widthhingedly connected to one longitudinal edge of said back panel and folded thereover, a second front panel of substantially the same width and elongation as said first front panel hingedly connected to the other longitudinal edge of said back panel and folded into an overlapping position on said first front panel, adhesive areas between said first and second front panels for adhesively securing said first and second front panels to each other, said adhesive areas comprising a strip-formed area extending parallel to and adjacent the fold line of said second front panel substantially along the entire longitudinal dimension thereof and two spaced apart substantially rectangular areas adjacent each end of said second front panel, the area between said strip-formed area and said rectangular areas being free of adhesive so as to form a substantially rectangular pocket with said first front panel which nocket is snaced from the fold lines of the envelope, a flap hingedly secured to said second front panel on the opened end of said pocket, end flaps hingedly connected to each end of said back panel for folding over said first and second front panels to close the envelope and said second front panel being cut out in the location of said pocket to define a viewing window.

2. An envelope according to claim 1 wherein the bottom of said Window is cut in a downwardly extending oval shape whereby to prevent contact of the bottom edge of said window by a card as it is placed in said pocket.

3. An envelope according to claim 1 wherein said pocket is formed with divergent side walls whereby to facilitate insertion of a rectangular card therein.
