Be it known that I, ROBERT O. l l mrn. citizen of the United Fiil'tQFi, residing at l-loldenville, in the county of lihighes and State of Oklahoma. have invented cer"ain new and useful Improvements in Base Blocks for Car-lVheel Jacks. of which the following is a specification.

lhe object of this invention is to provide a firm steady support for jacks employed to raise the journal boxes of car wheels to permit changing of the brasses, and a further object of the invention is to provide simple, inexpensive and efficient means whereby the car wheel will be prevented from rising; with the journal box. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a base consisting of a central bar 1 of iron or steel and side bars 2 of wood which are of the same length as the central bar and are rigidly secured thereto by bolts 3 in sertcd transversely through the side bars and through openings provided therefor in the central bar. Rising}; from one end of the central bar and preferably casi integral therewith is a post l which may be circular or angular in cross section and upon this post is slidably fitted a. clamp consisting of a central body 5 encircling the post and carrying a set screw or bolt 6 adapted to he turned home against the post whereby to secure the clamp at the proper height. Upon the edge of this body 5 a lug or tooth 7 which is adapted. to project over the rim edge 8 of the car wheel 9 so that the car wheel will be held to the track when. the jack is operated.

In the use of the device, the base is arranged adjacent the track rail and may rest upon the ends of the ties, as shown in Fig. l. The base is, of course, placed close to the track rail so that the clamp may be adjusted to bring the lug or tooth 7 over and in engagement with the rim edge 8, after which Serial No. 463,267.

the set bolt 6 is turned home, as will be readily understood. The acl: 10 is then placed in position upon the base under the journal box and is operated in the usual manner to raise the same. It frequently happens that the brasses become worn or corroded so that they tend to adhere to the end of the axle and, consequently, when the journal box is raised. the axle tends to rise therewith. This condition is overcome by the use of my device which effectually resists the tendency of the axle and the wheel thereon to rise from the rail so that the journal box may be readily lifted and the brass raised from the axle, the brass being then easily removed from the journal box. My device should be of such dimensions as to have considerable weight and it will, therefore, furnish a lirm base or support for the ack and will also be enabled to effectually resist the tendency of the car wheel to rise with the journal box. The device may be readily pushed into place under the journal boX or pulled out of position thereunder so that normally very little adjustment of the clamp will be needed. It may sometimes happen, however, that the base can be more advantageously used by placing one end between two adjacent ties and permitting the sides of the base to lie parallel with the ties in which event will be necessary to shift the clamp to a higher position on the post. The device is obviously simple in its construction and may be produced ata very low cost, while the very simplicity of its construction and the nature of the materials employed renders it exceedingly durable and efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A device for the purpose set forth, comprising a narrow base having a length sufficient to bridge over two adjacent railroad ties, a post integral with and rising from said base near one end thereof, a clamp comprising a body encircling and adjustable vertically upon the post and having a car wheel engaging tooth projecting from its edge and a pair of wooden side runners of the same thickness as the base and secured to the sides of said base by means of bolts to form a unit therewith of rectangular cross section.
