To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EMERY 'I`. ALYnA, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepinl and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting- Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its .object to provide a wheel clamp attachment for lifting jacks; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In lifting car axle journal boxes with jack screws, for the purpose of removing the bearing brasses, it is the tendency, as is well known, for the wheel to lift from the track with the journal box, thereby making it very diihcult to remove the brasses. The wheel clamp attachment which I provide is engageable with the wheel flange and the rail, to prevent such lifting movement of the wheel from the track.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Ileferring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, of a car wheel, journal box and rail, having applied thereto a lifting jack, to which the improved clamp is attached; and Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in plan and partly in transverse section, taken on the line v2 m2 of Fig. 1.
The numerals 1 and 2 indicate, respectively, one of the ties and one of the rails of a railway track, and the numerals 3 to G, inclusive, indicate, respectively, a car wheel, its journal, journal box and the bearing brasses. The parts just enumerated have been illustrated simply for the purpose of showing the improved clamp applied in working position and may be of the standard or any desired construction.
Resting on a short plank 7, supported on one or more of the ties 1, is a lifting jack, indicated as an entirety by the numeral 8, with its headed plunger in position to engage the bottom of the journal box 5 and lift the same. Spacing blocks 9 are interposed between the headed plunger of the Specification of Letters Patent.

rlhe wheel clamp attachment comprises a pair ofopposing jaws 11 and 12 engageable, respectively, with the tread flange of the wheel 3 and the ball of the rail Q. Formed with the jaw 12 is a vertical arm extension 13 and a rear bracket extension 14. Ratchet teeth 15 are formed in the front longitudinal edge of the jaw extension 13 and rigidly secured to the bracket lelis ahorizontal headed stud 1G, mounted in the guideway 10 for both pivotal and vertical sliding movements. The jaw 11 has formed therein a central vertical passage 17, through which the jaw extension 13 slidably works. Integrally formed with the jaw 11 is a pair of teeth 18 which extend into the passageway 17, one at each end and on opposite sides thereof.
It will be noted that one end of the jaw 1.1 is considerably longer than the other so that the same will fit car wheels with flanges of different widths. By turning the jaw 11 end for end and upside down either' end thereof may be brought into operative'relation with the jaw 12. In either position of the jaw 11 one of the teeth 1S is in coperative arrangement with the ratchet teeth 15.
Under the lifting movement of the journal box 5 by the jack 8, the lifting tendency ofvthe wheel 3 from the rail 2 will cause a separating angular movement of the jaws 11 and 12 in respect to each other. This angular' separation of the jaws causes a biting engagement of the teeth 18 with opposite edges of the jaw extension 13, with the uppermost of said teeth interlocked with one of the ratchet teeth 15, thereby positively locking the jaw 11 against sliding movement on the extension 13, away from the jaw 12. In this position of the jaws 11 and 12, the wheel 3 is securely clamped to the rail 2 against lifting movement and the bracket 1G reacts against the guideway 10, as a base of resistance, to prevent the said jaws from slipping endwise out' of engagement with the wheel and rail. By mounting the improved clamping attachment on the lifting jack with freedomfor rotary and sliding movements, the jack is free to settle under lifting strains without disturbing said clamp.
Vhat I claim is:
l. The combination with a lifting jack having a casing, of a clamp attachment mounted on the casing of said lifting jack, comprising a pair of jaws engageable with the tread flange of a wheel and a rail, for holding said wheel against lifting movement from said rail, said jaws reacting directly against said jack as abase of resistance.
2. The combination with a lifting jack, of a clamp attachment for said lifting jack, comprising a pair of jaws engagea'ble with the tread flange of a car wheel and a rail, for holding said wheel against lifting movement from the rail, one of said jaws being interlocked to the jack with freedom for vertical sliding movement with respect thereto.
3. The combination with a Alifting jack, of a clamp attachment for said lifting jack, comprising a pair of jaws engageable with the tread flange of a car wheel and a rail, for holding said wheel against lifting movement from the rail, said jaws having biting engagement one with the other under a separating angular movement of the one with respect to the other, and yone of said jaws being' interlocled to the jack with freedom for vertical sliding movement with respect thereto.
l. The combination with a lifting jack, of a clamp attachment for said lifting j ack, comprising a pair of jaws engageable with the tread flange of a car wheel and a rail, for holding said wheel against lifting movement from the rail, said jaws having biting engagement one with the other under a separating angular' movement of the one with respect to the other, and one of said jaws being interlocked to the acl; with freedom for vertical sliding movement with respect thereto, and re-acting against the jacl as a base of resistance.
5. The combination with a lifting jack, of a clamp attachment for said lifting jack, comprising a pair of jaws engageable with the tread flange of a car wheel and a rail, for holding said wheel against lifting move- `ment from said rail, one of said jaws being secured to said jack for pivotal and vertical sliding movements and having a ratchettooth equipped extension, and the other of said jaws being slidably mounted on said ratchet-tooth equipped extension and arranged to be interlocked therewith under an angular movement of one of said jaws with respect to the other.

8. The combination with a lifting jack, of a clamp attachment for said lifting jack, comprising a pair of jaws engageable with the tread flange of a car wheel and a rail', for holding said wheel against lifting movement from said rail, one of saidjaws having a ratchet tooth equipped extension, and the other of said aws being slidably mounted on said ratchet-tooth equipped extension and arranged to be interlocled therewith under an angular movement of one of said jaws with respect to the other.
9. The combination with a lifting jack, of a clamp attachment for said lifting jack, comprising a pair of jaws engageable with the tread flange of a car wheel and a rail, for holding said wheel against lifting movement from said rail, one of said jaws having a ratchet-tooth equipped extension, and the other of said jaws being reversibly and slidably mounted on said ratchet-tooth equipped extension and having a pair' of teeth, either one of which is engageable with said ratchettooth equipped extension under an angular movement of one of said jaws with respect to the other. y
