Description

UNET @FVQEW CASSUS G. IVICCOW'N, 0F ALLANCE, OHIO.
RAILWAY-TE.
inserire.
Application iled May 26, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Cassius G. McCowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Railway-Tie, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to railway ties and more particularly to a metallic tie having a double rail bearing surface at each end, means being provided for clamping the rails together upon the tie; other objects being to provide a strong and durable tie for rails which can be sustained to advantage upon ballast.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in the form and details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of ties embodying the invention, showing rails clamped in position thereon;
F ig. 2, a section on the line II-II, Fig. l;
Fig. 3, a section on the line lll-IIL Fig. l; l
Fig. 4, a section showing a modified form of clamping means; and
Fig. 5, a perspective View of one of the clamping blocks.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
The tie is substantially X-shaped or crossshaped and comprises the arms 1, 2, 8 and 4, upon each of which is formed the reduced rail receiving end portion 5 which extends outwardly from the rail engaging lug 6, which is formed integrally upon each arm of the tie.
Each arm of the tie, as well as the reduced portions thereof, is preferably I- shaped in cross section in order to provide for strength and lightness, and at the same time allow the tie to be easily tamped in position in the ballast.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Serial No. 472,653.
The rails 7 are placed upon the reduced extremities 5 of the arms of the tie, the inner side of the base 8 of each rail being placed beneath the lugs 6. For the purpose of clamping the rails securely upon the ties, a clamping block 9 is placed over the outer side of the base fiange of each rail between each pair of ties, each clamping block having a depending boss portion 10 which receives the extremity of the tie rod 11, the nuts 12 being placed upon the threaded extremities of said tie rod and in engagement with the clamping blocks for the purpose of drawing said blocks tightly upon the rails and clamping the rails against the rail engaging lugs 6.
In Fig. 4: is shown a modified form of clamping means in which a pair of tie rods 13 are provided, each having a hook 14 at its outer end for engagement with the base flange of the rail, a turn buckle 1 5 engaging the screw threaded inner extremities of said tie rods.
. From the foregoing and the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a strong and durable tie is provided having a double rail bearing surface at each end and which will prevent sliding or moving of the tie in the ballast, the clamping means provided being adapted for quickly and readily assembling the rails upon the ties or removing the same therefrom for the purpose of replacing a rail or tie, the rails being clamped upon the ties entirely by the clamp ing means above described without the necessity of the use of spikes or bolts.
Although the drawings and above specification diselose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, l desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention, many changes in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience suggests, without departing from the spirt of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
1. A metallic tie of cross shape provided with rail engaging lugs ne-ar the end portions thereof arranged to engage the inner sides of the bases of the rails, a tie bar conmeeting the rails and means upon the tie bar for di'awing the rails toward each other.
2. A metallic tie of cross shape provided with rail engaging lugs near the inner poitions thereof arranged to engage the inner sides of the bases of the rails, clamp blocks engaging the outer sides of the rails, a tie bar connecting the clamp blocks and means upon the tie bar for drawing the Clamp blocks toward each other to Clamp therails 10 against the said lugs.
In testimony that I Claim the above, I have hereuntosubsoribed my name. v
CASSIUS G. MCCOVN.
