To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. TAY- LOR and WVILLIAM R. lVAr'rs, citizens of the United States, residing at Bonner Springs, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention has reference to improvements in the construction of railroad ties.
Our object is to produce a metallic tie for supporting railway rails.
A further object is to produce a metallic tie for supporting railway rails which is made up of separable sections, whereby the same may be easily handled or arranged in a compact package for transportation, the said members having their outer ends provided with rail engaging lips or flanges, each having removably associated therewith an inner rail engaging member, said members being connected to the respective sections by wedge means, and the respective sections being also connected together by wedge means.
A further object is to produce a tie for railway rails comprising each a pair of channeled members, one designed to be received in the other and having wedge keys for securing the said members together and in longitudinal alinement, each of said members having its outer end formed with a rail engaging flange or block, and being rounded upwardly and flattened at its said end from the base thereof whereby to provide shoulders which will more effectively prevent the longitudinal movement of the tie in the road bed, the said tie having its upper edges flanged to prevent the sinking of the same in the roadbed and may and preferably has its under face formed with lugs or calks which being received in the roadbed more effectively hold the tie thereon, simple means, in the nature of wedge members being provided for connecting the sections of the tie. and rail engaging clamps having channeled body portions are received in the channeled bodies of the tie proper and are secured thereon by wedge means, the latter more effectively forcing the clamps into engagement with the rails.

wherein the construction is such as to hold the IZlllS in proper spaced relation on the tie under all conditions and also wherein the s nking, tilting or lateral movement of the tie will be entirely prevented, the construction, in addition to this being of a simple nature which may be cheaply manufactured and marketed.
The foregoing objects, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating rails supported on ties in accordance with this invention.

As disclosed by the drawings, our improved tie comprises two members or sections both of which being substantially similarly constructed, but the concaved body of one of the tie sections is of a slightly greater depth and width than the other which is received therein. Except for this, the sections are similar, and therefore reference characters applying to one may be understood as equally applicable to the other.

The channeled bodies are approximately semi-circular in cross section and have their edges provided with outwardly extending flanges 2. The keys 4: have apertures 5 therethrough, through certain of which are inserted securing means which are preferably in the nature of cotter pins 6. Preferably the under faces of the members 1 are provided with calks 7, the keys in the flanges preventing the sinking of the tie in the roadbed, and the calks and the keys preventing the longitudinal movement of the tie in the roadbed.
Each section 1 has its under face, adjacent to the outer end thereof rounded upwardly and flattened, as at 8, and the upper face of the said flattened portion is formed with or has secured thereto an inwardly directed flange 9 that terminates in an upwardly directed plate 10. The flange and plate provide brace members which engage the outer base flange and are received in the fishing space on the outer sides of the rails 11. Preferably the braces, for the sake of reinforcement are ribbed, as at 12, and also, if desired, the braces may have their inner faces concaved, that is rounded outwardly from the ends to the center thereof, the said braces being also preferably ribbed. This last mentioned construction is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
In each of the sections there is the rounded body 13 of metallic rail engaging members 14. The outer ends of the members '14 are flattened, as at 15, and from the said flattened portions the members are formed with upper laterally extending elongated lips 16, the said lips resting over the inner flanges of the rails, and the shoulders provided by the flattened ends of the body members are disposed in contacting engagement with the inner edges of the base flanges of the said rails. The bodies of the removable rail engaging members are provided with alining wedge openings 17, and the bodies of the tie sections are provided with similar openings 18. Through these openings are passed wedge keys 19, the said keys having apertures 20 through which pass securing elements, such as cotter pins 21 that are in contact with one of the inner walls of the removable rail engaging members.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the construction and advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate, and therefore further detailed description will not be'attempted.
Having described the invention, we claim zp l '1. A tie for supporting railway rails com prising a channeled metallic member having its edges flanged outwardly, its base flattened at its ends and provided with longitudinal extensions which terminate in rail engaging flanges, removable rail engaging members in the tie body, each having a channeled body portion terminating in a shoulder designed to contact with the inner edges of the base flanges of the rails, and a lip designed to overlie and contact with the upper faces of the said base flanges of the rails, and wedge means between the tie body and the said removable rail engaging members for forcing the same in the direction of the rails.
2. A tie for supporting railway rails comprising a channeled metallic member having its edges flangedoutwardly, its base flattened at its ends and provided with longitudinal extensions which terminate in rail engaging flanges, removable rail engaging members in the tie body, each having a channeled body portion terminating in a shoulder designed to contact with the inner edges of the base flanges of the rails, and a lip designed to overlie and contact with the upper faces of the said base flanges of the rails, and wedge means between thetie body and the said removable rail engaging members for forcing the same in the direction of the rails, and means engaging said wedges for holding the same on the tie and rail engaging members. 7
3. A tie for supporting railway rails comprising companion channeled members one designed to be received in the other, and each having its edges provided with outstanding flanges, wedge means securing the members connected, each of said members having its outer end flattened and extended outwardly in a plane with the straight flanges thereof, and the said portions provided with angle rail engaging flanges, removable rail engaging members, each including achanneled body portion received in the channeled sections of the tie, the body portion of each of said railengaging members having a flattened end to contact with the inner longitudinal edges of the base flanges of the rails, and having an outstanding lip from its said end to overlie and contact with the upper face of the said flanges of the rails, and wedges passing transversely througlrthe tie sections and removable rail engaging sections for holding the latter on the former.
4.
