SPIKE-FULLER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE K. REILEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Scottdale, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accon'ipanying drawing.

This invention relates to a spike pulle particularly designed for removing spikes from ties and releasing the rails which are normally held by said spikes.

The invention has for its object to provide a pulling device for spikes wherein positive and reliable means are employed for gripping the head of a spike and elevating the same, the means employed being easily operated to positively withdraw the spike from a railroad tie.

A further object of this invention is to provide a spike puller constructed somewhat along the lines of a jack, the puller having a novel gripping device for gripping the head of a spike and firmly holding the same while the puller is actuated.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive spike puller that can be advantageously used by the section hands and bosses of railroads.

With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and then specifically claimed.

Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spike puller partly in section, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the spike puller.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a base plate having a vertical housing 2 extending from one edge thereof to rest upon the base flange S of the rail 1. In the housing 2 is trunnioned or pivotally mounted, as at 5, a yoke 6 and pivotally mounted in said yoke are oppositely disposed pawls 7 for engaging ratchet teeth 8 formed in opposite sides of a vertical bar 9, extending upwardly through an opening 10 formed in the top of the housing. The lower end of the bar 9 is provided with a head 11 having grooves 12 for gripping Specification of Letters Patent.

The gripping members are retained within the grooves 12 of the head 11 by pins 14. pivotally connected together, as at 15, and have the lower ends thereof provided with hooks 16 for engaging underthe head 17 of a spike 18. The gripping members 13 are constructed somewhat similar to a pair of tongs and can be easily placed in engagement with the head 17 of the spike 18, an upward movement of the bar 9 tending to close the gripping members 13 whereby the spike will be firmly held.

One side of the housin 2 is provided with a vertical slot 19 and extending into said slot is a lug 20 carried by a bracket 21 adapt-- ed to rest upon the head of the rail 4t, said bracket bein fixed relative to the housing by a bolt and a nut 23.

in order that the yoke 6 can be oscillated in the housing from either end thereof, the ends of the yoke are provided with studs 2t, either of which is adapted to support a handle 25, so that the yoke may be oscillated from either side of the rail.

it is apparent that when the bracket 21 rests upon the head of the rail 4 that the housing 2 will be suliiciently braced to per mit of theyoke being oscillated to raise the bar 9 and withdraw the spike 18 from the tie 26.

Either one of the pawls 7 can be used in connection with the yoke, and both pawls swung out of engagement with the bar 9 to permit of said bar being lowered to place the gripping members in engagement with the head 17 of the spike 18.

lVhile in the drawings forming a part of this application there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, I would have it understood that the detail construction thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

A spike puller, comprising a base plate, a housing rising from said base plate and extending beyond the forward edge of the base plate, a yoke trunnioned'in the sides of the housing near the upper end of the latter and provided on each end with a stud, a handle adapted to be connected with either of said studs, a rack bar movable vertically through Patented Aug. 31, 1909.

The gripping members are,

the upper end of said housing, a pair of pawis carried by the yoke and disposed at opposite sides of the rack bar, said rack bar provided on its lower end with a head provided on opposite sides thereof with grooves, a pair of gripping members having shanks received in the grooves of said head and slidably held therein, and a bracket adjustably secured to one of the sides of said housing.
