This invention relates to an improvement in rail or track braces, and more particularly to track braces which are adjustable for rails of different sizes. 1 The primary object of thisinvention is to provide any adjustable track brace of extreme" ly rigid construction which can be easily and quickly applied to the railsy-or removed therefrom, and which has means for preventing the turning of the tie-rod within the rail clips, wherebythe. necessity of holding said tie rod is eliminated when installingmy improved track brace.
Another object of my invention is to provide a track brace having holding means whereby the tierod is prevented from turning within the rail clips, said holding. means beingaccomplished in a simple,.eflicient and economical manner.
My invention consists in providln-g a flattened surface on .the threaded ends of the usual tie rod adapted to engage a coacting flattened surface within the rail clips, and in the construction, combination. location and. arrangement of parts,'as hereinfully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings: a Fig. 1 is a side'elevation of the improved brace shown applied to a track, the rails of In the embodiment of my lnvention as illustrated and-which shows a'preferred construction I provide a track brace comprising tie rod 7 which extends beneath the rails8 of the track. and which is .lon'gerthan the 1929. ,:Seria1f'1 To. 353,774.
width of said track; Themes idi salami. 7 are p'rovidedwiththreads 9... Eachofthe 'railfclipsl lO-is provided with'a longitudinal hole 11: (Figs. 3. and 4).""to:slidablyfrceive' V Iprovide @Pair of clamping nuts12 and locks the tie-:rod7, For: each pair ofirailclipslO ing-nuts13',as"clearly illustrated in Figs. l
and 2, respectively. Each of the'rail clips 10. v V
isjprovided with a shelf 14, which--shelf'engages the flange 15 of rail8 and an overhang.-
ing lip or flange retaining member 16 which engages'the outer edge'andupper surface of said flange 15. as clearlyshown in Fig. 1', said lip being strengthened by means of ribs 17. As clearly shown in Fig. 3,'the longitudinal .hole 11, througheach rail clip 10, is
provided with a flattened side'l-l and, as
clearly illustrated in Figs. 1, 2.5 andv6 respectively, the threads 9 of thej-tie-bar 7 be i 165; When installing a. trackbrace made ac v cording to-my invention '-it'; is.notnecessary.
ing provided with a flattened portion 7 7 r to hold the tie-bar 7 when tightening the clamping nuts '12 and locking nuts 13', due
to the factYthat the flattened? portion 7' of said tie-rod engages theflattened portionll of hole 11 and thereby prevents saidrod 7 from being turned within theilongitudinal hole llwithin the rail clips 10. I
are'that they hold thetrack to gage on bad "curves and prevent rails from turning over;
Some of the advantages of this invention they alsoprevent the track from spreading or lifting the spikes and where ties are'rotted V I i so P and will not hold spikes a fewof thesenovel braces will keep the track safe. QSjaid braces can be installed in four minutes and can be used'over and over again.
Another advantage of this invention is that the rail clips 10 are very strong and durable and clamp all four sides of the flange or base of therailand hold itas in a vise when the clamping nuts 12 and locking nuts 13 are screwed home against said clips. Still another advantage of my invention is the simple and efiicient means for permitting the track rails to be adjusted laterally in either direction independently of each other and at the same time having simple and eflicient means for holding the tie rod from turning during these various adjustments.
It Will be understood that certain changes and modifications of the invention can be made Without departing from the scope or spirit thereof as defined in the claim.
WhatI-claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is: v In combination With a track rail, a pair of rail clips adapted to embrace the rail flanges,
V non-circular portion of saidthreaded end: portion engaging the non-circular portlon of said non-circular holes respectively, a nut on respectively; 'a' n0n circular hole through each clip and disposed in alinement With'ea'ch other, a tie rod having a threaded end portion intersected by a non-circular portion; the
said tie rod on-each side of said rail and adapted to be screwed toward or away from its adjacent clip vvhereby said rail may be ad]ust e'd laterally in either direction independently of the other track rail.
GEORGE ASHTON.
