RAIL TIE.
emmas.
Application filed -September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLIsAAo PLosT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Rail Tie, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail ties, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter disclosed.
An object of the invention is to provide a metallic-"rail'tie constructed to withstand a maximum crushing pressure and having a sufficient resiliency to compensate "for rail vibration.
-Another object of the invention is to provide a rail tie with novel and efficient means for connecting therail'i'ntrue alinement to Fig. 1 is a plan view of a section of rail and a section of the tie embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the rail tie showing the rail in connection therewith in cross section.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the rail tie.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the main cross memher 1 of the rail tie is shown as comprising a metallic member semi-circular in cross section, arranged to form an arched supporting wall. The member 1 is preferably made by cutting a cylindrical boiler tube or similar tube longitudinally on a median-line.
In order to form a receiving recess for the rail, the member 1 is flattened, as illustrated in Fig. 2, said recess being indicated by 2. It will be understood that the recess 2 is formed adjacent to each end of the cross member 1, being sufficient for illustrative purposes, however, to show only an end section of the main cross member.
The recess 2 extends transversely of the rail member 1 and has a bottom horizontal wall for supporting the bottom face of the lower flange 8 of the rail 4. The recess 2 is of a width corresponding to the cross sectional width of the flange 3 and is of suflicient depth so that the narrow extremities of the beveled faces 5 of the lower flange Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted June '13 1922 29,1921. SerIaI'NO. 504,113.
. of the rail will be below the plane of the 'top of the recess.
In orderto reinforce 'the'm'ember l ben'eath the point of 'strainan'd to prevent the spreading of the semi-circular member 1,"a plate 6 having marginal up turn'ed flanges 7 isprovided. The plate (Sis Of a width so that the flanges 7"over"-lie the si deedges of the wall of the member 1, constituting a brace or strut holding the tie member 1 from spreading.
Adjacent to eachend of the plate 6 and "formed by upwardly deflecting walls oftlie plate are recesses S-adapte'd to receive and hold from turning the heads 9'of bolts 10. Preferably'th'e'walls of the plate surround ingfthe heads 9 of the bolts are-erim edinwardly to rigidly embrace the heads 9 "of the bolts and prevent the bolts from turning. The bolts 10 extend upwardly and are of a length sufficient to rise above the top wall of the member 1, passing through openings formed therein for that purpose.
Adjacent to and extending longitudinally from the side walls of the recesses 2 are flattened portions 11 adapted to constitute seats for clamps 12, said clamps 12 having their inner ends 13 deflected upwardly so that they rest against the inclined upper walls of the flange 5 of the rails.
In connecting the rails with the ties, the clamp 12 on one side is mounted on the bolt 10 and a nut 14 for the bolt screwed in place to adjust and retain the clamp 12. The rail is then slipped in place in the recess 2, the side wall of'the flange 5 of the rail extending under the adjusted clamp. The clamp 12 on the opposite side is then mounted in place over the corresponding bolt and the nut 14 of the bolt screwed down in place.
In track laying, inasmuch as the recesses 2 are all in alinement by alining the ends of the ties, an alined rail receiving seat formed by the recesses 2 is provided so as to insure ber, bolts supported by said plate and extending through the top Wall of said firstnamed member, and clamps adapted to be adjusted on said bolts for clamping the rail in connection With said first-named member.
2. A rail tie, comprising a semi-cylindrical member having a transverse rail receiving recess in the top thereof, and rests extending laterally from said first-named recess; a plate having side flanges adapted to be mounted beneath said recess, said side flanges constituting abutments for the bottom edges of said first-named member, said plate being provided With recesses; bolts extending through said plate on either side of the recesses in said first-named member, said bolts projecting above the top Wall of said first-named member; clamps carried by said bolts; and nuts received by said bolts for clamping said clamps against the upper Wall of the lower flange of the rail for holding said rail in connection With said firstnamed member in clamping engagement.
3. A rail tie, comprising an arched rnetallic cross member having a rail receiving recess, a retaining plate mounted at the bottom of'said cross member having means thereon for preventing the lateral spreading of said member, clamping devices in connection with said cross member for clamping the rail in position in said recess, and elements engaging said clamping devices and said plate and holding all of said-parts in proper relationship With each other and with the cross member.
'41. A rail tie, comprising a semi-cylindrical member having its edges downward and having a rail receiving recess in the top thereof, a retaining plate in connection with said member to preventthe member from spreading, clamps on top of said member at the sides of the recess, and bolts passing up- Wardly through said plate and through the top of said member and through said clamps holding all of said parts in proper relationship with each other.
