UNITED STATES y'VTIIII'JIAM S. ELLIOTT, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Bmomn'riuc coNDENsm Application led October 3, 191,9. Serial No. 328,319.
To all 'whom it may concer/1,:
Be it known that L'WinnrAM S. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsbur h, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barometric Condensers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the ligure is a sectional elevation, largely. conventional, of a barometric condenser embodying my invention.
My invention has relation to' barometric condensers and is designed to provide a conand in which the parts are `so arranged as to greatly simplify the supporting vstructure and provide a balanced or symmetrical construction. ln .large turbine installations, the exhaust pipes become large and bulky and the condensers are very heavy. The usual method of installation is to provide an elbowl at the top of the exhaust pipe Which goes into the side of the condenser. This makes the condenser hang out at one side of the exhaust pipe, giving an unbalanced or unstable apparatus, and a tower or other supporting structure is necessary in connection therewith.
ln accordance with my invention I arrange the exhaust pipe 2 which carries the exhaust steam from the engine to the condenser in a centrally vertical position, and provide at the upper end thereof a T-connection 3 to each arm of which is attached a depending condenser structure 4. These condenser structures may be of any suitable or usual character, this forming no part of my invention. Each structure is provided with.l a separate downwardly extendlng tail pipe 5 leading downwardly into a Well 6. 7 designates a branched water supply pipe, one branch leading to each conf denser.
The tail pipe 5 may be provided with any suitable supports 8, thus giving the condenser structure as a whole a three-point or multiple support.
It will be noted from the-drawing that the entire structure is so arranged that the center of gravity of the structure as a. whole comes within the base' of the exhaust pipe,
the structure being arranged symmetrically around the vertical center of such pipe.A
This gives a very stable arrangement which renders the use of towers or other extraneous supporting means unnecessary.
While in the accompanying drawing l have shown only two condensers, it will be apparent that more than two condensers -centrally arranged exhaust pipe and a plurality Vof condensers arranged laterally of said pipe and connected with the upper portion thereof, the center of gravity of the structure as a whole coming within the base of said pipe, and said pipe forming the main support for said condensers,` substantially as described.
l3. AA condenser structure, comprising a centrally arranged exhaust pipe and a plurality of condensers connected thereto and arranged substantially symmetrical with re.
spect to the vertical axis of said pipe, said exhaust pipe forming' the main support for said lcondensers, each of said condensers having a depending tail pipe and a support for each of the tail pipes, substantially as described. Y
4, A condenser structure, comprising a centrally arranged exhaust pipe, and a plu-y rality of condensers connected with the upper portion thereof and arranged substantially symmetrical with respect to the vertical axis of said pipe, said exhaust pipe formingv the main support for said con densers, each of said condensers having anauxiliary point 'of support independent of said pipe, substantially as described.
5. A condenserg'comprising a centrally arranged exhaust pipe and a plurality of condensers arranged around said pipe and .con-
nected thereto, said exhaust pipe forming the main support for said condensers, substantially as'described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand..l
WILLIAM S. ELLIOTT.
