ATTORNEY 14. Connections 46 serve not only to supply headers 44 with water, but also help to support headers 44. An outlet for steam formed in the tubes 40 is provided at their upper ends by means of headers 48, 48 into which the tube 40 are connected and which run parallel to the side walls of the fire-box just above the ring 10. To provide an outlet for steam from headers 48 a few of the water tubes in groups 8, 8, are bent inwardly at their lower ends as indicated at 8 and con nected into the headers 48. Preferably the tubes 40 are of the bifurcated type as appears clearly from Figs. 1 and 2. Plates 50, 50 may be employed to extend between the inclined plates 82 and the bottom of ring 10 to reinforce plates 32.
While I have shown the burner at the front end of the fire-box, it may be placed in any convenient location. It will be understood, also, that my improvements are adapted for use in any water tube boiler irrespective of the fuel burned therein.
I claim:
1. A fire-box having a hollow base ring, water tubes forming walls of the box and some of which connect into said ring at their lower ends, headers parallel to the sides of the fire-box and near the plane of said ring, lower headers below said headers, water tubes extending upwardly from said lower headers and connecting said lower to said first headers, tubular connecting means between the ends of said lower headers and said ring, means for supplying water to said ring, and means for taking off steam from said first headers.
2. A fire-box as set forth in claim 1 and in which the means for taking off steam from the first headers comprises some of the tubes forming the walls of the fire-box.
3. The fire-box as set forth in claim 1, together with a pan below the lower headers, and a burner for fluid fuel set at the forward end of said pan and discharging rearwardly above it.
4. A fire-box having hollow base ring, water tubes forming walls of said box most of which connect into said ring at their lower ends, headers parallel to the sides of said fire-box and near the plane of said ring, lower headers inside and below said headers, water tubes inclined upwardly and outwardly from said lower headers and connecting said lower to said first headers, tubular connecting and supporting means between the ends of said lower headers and said ring, means for supplying water to said ring, means for taking ofi steam from said first headers, a pan below said lower headers, a burner for fluid fuel set at the forward end of said pan and discharging rearwardly above it, insulating material outside said inclined tubes, and plates between the pan and ring and outside said insulation.
