Description

M. J, KERLEY.
SAFE AND VAULT. AFPLHLATIQN nusn APR. 30. 1921.
1,427 68, Patentedl Aug. 2 9, 19220 uurrw STATES PATENT OFFICE};
MICHEAL J. KEELEY, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
SAFE AND VAULT.
Application filed April 30,
T 0 a1 Z whom it marz concern.
Be it known that I, MroHEAn J, KERLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Sioux City, in the county of Woodhury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes and Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safes and vaults and particularly to a safety device applied to the doors of such safes or vaults intended to release a poisonous gas upon the distortion of the locking bar of the safe, as would occur by the use of explosives for dislodging the lock, or the employment of other force, such as hammering or the like, to effect its dislodgment.
An object of this invention is to provide a tank or container for the source of thepoisonous gas, whether it be a'l-iquid'which, upon evaporation, produces the gas, or whether it is in gaseous form when stored, and means for fracturing the material of the container upon the distortion or dislodgment. of the said locking bar, it being, of course, understood that the container is preferably formed of sheet metal or some plastic compostion such as earthenware which can be punctured or fractured by the spurs.
It is a further object. of this .invention to provide adjustable fracturing elements in order that their positions with relation to the container or holder may be changed to suit particular requirements and proportions,
'Withtheforegoing and othenobjects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed;
In describing the invention 'in. detail, referencewill be had to the accompanying drawings forming partof this application wherein like characters denote corresponding- }parts in the several views, and in whic i I Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of-- the inner face of a safe door;
Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view on the 5o line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 illustrates a view in elevation of a safe door in a closed position; and
Figure 4 illustrates an enlarged detailed sectional view of a fragment of the locking bar with a spur applied thereto.
or surface of the locking bar.
ment of the locking bar.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 29, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 465,646.
In these drawings 5 denotes a safe door which maybe of any appropriate construction and is here conventionally'shown, havmg the usual mountings 6 such as hinge. members by which it may be supported in place. The door is suppliedwith the usual lock controlling mechanism such as 7, which may be in the nature of a permutation or time controlling lock which guards a latch or retainer '8 for-engaging the locking bar 9, the said locking nected to the carrier bar 10, by which the locking bolts 11 are projected or retracted, according to the direction of movement imparted to the locking bar, it being understood, of course, that the locking bar may penetrating points, and these heads have threaded shanks 14: adapted to be applied to threaded sockets 15 formed in the inner face Any convenient number of these spikes or spurs may be employed and I have here shown three which extend approximately the full length of the receptacle 16 which is intended to containthe material which produces the poisonous vapor or gas. The receptacle 16 is secured to the innersurface of the outer wall of the safe door in any appropriate manner, but as the manner of supporting or securing it in its position is an immaterial detail of construction, no mechanical means for effecti'ng\this result is illustrated. The threaded shanks 14 have jam nuts 17 applied to them, by which means the spurs may be held at different positions of adjustment, and it is,
as to cause a. puncture or fracture of the wallof the container with but slight move- This is desirable, because under ordinary conditions of use, the locking bar would not have any lateral movement whatever and therefore, any
lateral movement which would be imparted toit would be caused by unusual conditions which the poisonous vapor or gas would be expected to prevent or stop'. Of course, if
' the shanks.
desired, the points could be set a greater distance from the container, but as this degree of relationship is immaterial to a disclosure of the invention, it vyill be left Wholly to the Wishes of the manufacturer or user in practice. A burglar-proof safe or vault of this character could be produced at comparatively small cost and -it could be installed on safes or vaults now in common use, since the only requirement would be the formation of a cavity in the lining of the safe of such size 1 ,427,ess
a means for holding the container in proper relation to the spurs.
I claim:
1. In a safe or vault door having a locking bar, spurs carried by the locking bar, and a container fora poisonous element located in proximity to the spurs to be fractured by the spurs upon abnormal movement of the locking bar. I n
2. In a safe or vault door having a locking bar with recesses therein, spurs having shanks anchored in the recesses, the said spurs projecting from the side of the looking bar, and a container for poisonous material located in proximity to the points of the spurs and adapted to be fractured upon abnormal movement of the said spurs.
