ALLEN W. RUDY, OF DALTON, OHIO.
' PADLOGK PROTECTOR,
Application filed August 3 1921. Serial No. 489,440.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN NV. RUDY, a
citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Dalton, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Padlock Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient and at the same time inexpensive means for protecting a padlock from injury due to surreptitious orunauthorized efforts to open or break the same and also designed as a means for protecting the same from weather conditions, the design of the protecting device being such as to permit of its application to padlocks of different sizes and constructions; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure l is a view of a padlock cover or protector embodying the invention applied in the operative position to and enclosing or housing the padlock.
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view similar to Figure 2 but taken in a plane at right angles thereto.
Figure 4 is a transverse section on the plane indicated'by the line td of Figure 2.
The cover or protector 10 is of substantially bell or dome shape,'of a size adapted to readily receive and house the padlock l1 and provided at its closed or arched end with a slot 12 adapted to receive and fit over the staple 13 which is engaged by the hasp 14, said staple extending through the slot for a distance suflicient to enable the shackle 15 of the padlock to be engaged therewith.
The larger or base end of the protector is open to giveaccess to the padlock housed therein, but while the protector is preferably made of sheet metal, as a means of minimizing the cost thereof, it is preferably reinforced at its edge by a returned lap or bead 16 and at its sides by the spaced ribs 17 preferably disposed longitudinally of the ing ribs.
hood or in radialrelation with the end slot Also openings 18 may be formed in the housing to permit of the passage of keys to give access to-the key holes of the padlock. lVlnle the housing, particularly when con structed of sheet metal, and it is preferred to construct the same of, a pliable metal so as to bend rather than break, may be dis torted by any efforts directed to the unathorized or forcible opening of the lock or the breakage thereof, the lock casing will be protected from blows which would tend to injurethe same, and the engagement of the housing with the staple prevents the use-of a lever or means of prying the staple or shackle or of inserting a lever through the shackle and between the same and the end of the padlock casing in an effort to strain th shackle out of engagement with the eas- 2. A padlock protector consisting of a,
domed or bell shaped housing having a slot through which the staple engaged by the padlock shackle may be extended and provided with key hole openings and reinforcmg means. i
3. A- padlock protector consisting of a domed or bell shaped housing of pliable material provided with means forengaging a'staple with which the padlock shackle is engaged and having an open base end.
4. A padlock protector consisting of adomed or bell shaped housing of pliable material provided with means for engaging a staple with which the padlock shackle is engaged and having an open base end, the walls of the housing being provided with reinforc- In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
