Application filed September 12,1931. Serial No. 562,449.
My invention relates to ignition switch locks for automobiles, etc.
The object of my invention is to provide means for preventing the unlocking of the switch lock furnished as a part of the equipment of an automobile, with a lock which overlies the said switch lock to closely cover the same to prevent the unlocking of the switch look by an unauthorized person.
A further object of my invention is to provide said device in a form in which it may be manufactured and sold as a new article of manufacture, which may be used as a shield for any lock of the Yale and similar types of locks.
A further object is to provide a lock and shield combination, comprising a housing with a locking mechanism mounted therein, in
swinging relation thereto in such a manner as to prevent the removal of the shield from the housing, in the event that the rod on which the hinge is mounted is reinoved from the housing.
Further objects of my invention, andthe advantages of the/present construction will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the drawing, which forms a part of this specification Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a por- :"tiOII of an instrument board as made for use with automobiles, having thereon my improved device.
2 is a side view showingthe housing and a portion of the instrument board in section, withthe locking shield in closed and locked position relative to the switch lock.
Fig. 3 is 'a vertical sectional view through the housing and showing the locking shield in its open position.
10 indicates the instrument board, and 11 a switch lock of a type usually forming a part of an automobile equipment.
12 indicates a metal housing which is se 5' cured to the instrument board 10 by a nut and screw combination 13, which extends through an inwardly extending base flange 14 of the housing.
g The opening in the base flange is suliiciently large topermit the projecting front face portion 15 of the lock 11 to project therethrough' as illustrated. V r I 16 indicates a base plate on which is mounted a casing 17, in which is mounted the lock mechanism which actuates the latch 17 by means of a key 18. This lock mechanism may be of any suitable construction. The base plate extends beyond the casing 17 into a cylinder at 18, which rests in a semi-circular socket 19 formed in the housing and ex tends below the upwardly extending end20 of the housing, as shown. I
A rod 21 extends across the housing through the cylinder 18 thus providing a hinge for the casing '17. The lower end of the housing'is cut away to permit the casing to swing downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 8, while the depth of the housing chamber 22 is. equal to the width of the casing 17, so that when the casing is in its, locked position in the housing its exposed surface is flush with the top end of the casing. A recess 23 is formed in the upper end of the housing to provide a shoulder 24 which abuts the projecting end of the latch 17' to hold the casing in locked relation with 1 i the housing.
lVhen the casing is locked in the housing, it cannot be removed therefrom, even though the rod 21 is removed, thus preventso ing the lock from being opened, as will be readily understood.
The base plate 16 is preferably formed with an opening extending therethrough having a diameter greater than the diameter of the projecting portion 15 of the switch lock, so that in the event said projecting portion 15 is of greater thickness than the thickness of the flange 14 it may project a predetermined distance within the casing 17 It will beobserved that the casing fits closely within the walls of the housing.
The construction abovedescribed is such that it would be difi'icult to pry the casing 17 from its housing without destroying the device. V 7 -Having'thus described my invention, I claim as new r r In combination with a panel having a lock thereon, a housing secured'to the panel, and
bearing in the socket, a wall of the socket overlying the rolled hinge member, a hinge pin extending through the rolled extension and Walls of the housing, a latch on the lock casing opposite the plate extension and a keeper in the housing for the latch.
