Description

A. M. ULLMAN. ATTACHMENT ron SAFE SI APPLlCAi'lON FILED MAYIB. I921- Patented Feb. 7, 1922.
I AM. ULLMAN.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUBREY M. ULLMAN, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO W. A.
WALLENDER, SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
ATTACHMENT FOR SAFES.
Application filed May 18,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUBREY M. ULLMAN, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Springfield, in Green County and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements [in Attachments for Safes, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to an adjustment for safes, vaults and the like, and more particularly to an arrangement wherein a container of obnoxious gas or liquid may be positioned so that upon an unauthorized openingv of the safe the same may be spilled or freed, making the vicinity of the safe untenable.
Various arrangements have heretofore been used wherein noxious gases have been employed to burglar proof safes and vaults, but generally 'speaking, in prior arrangements, there was always the danger of causing the gas to function upon an authorized opening' of the safe,.thereby, making the use ofthe same dangerous. It' is, therefore, the object of my invention to provide an arrangement of this type wherein the support for the container which carries the noxious fluid or gas may be quickly and conveniently removed when a continued use of the safe is desired.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a supporting member. or frame adapted to receive a glass receptacle in which is contained the noxious'fluid or gas. A pin and slot connection is provided between this supporting member and the floor of the safe so arranged that the supporting member and with it, the glass receptacle may be quickly removed from its position at the door of the safe. I further provide a fracturing device for. breaking. the glass receptacle, which fracturing device is adapted to be connected to the locking bolt of the safe door by a clutch controlled by the slidingmovement of the safe door bolt.
Therefore, when the safe. door is opened by one having the proper authority, the fracturing device will be disconnected whereby danger ofaccidentally freeing the noxious gas is eliminated. On the other hand, when the safe door isforced open, the fracturing device functions, breaking the glass receptacle tofree the gas contained therein, whereby it will function to make the vicinity of the safe untenable.
The particular features of my invention Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 7, 1922. 1921. Serial No. 470,688.
will be made more apparent in the accompanying specification and drawings in which Fig. l is a sectional view of a front corner ofa safe with my improved device in positiOn,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the structure shown in Fig. 1, p
' Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the clutch mechanism,
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the supporting member and,
. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the manner of attaching the supporting member to the floor of the safe or vault.
In the drawings S represents a safe or vault rovided with a door D and a bottom T e door D is provided with a door bolt C of usual construction. The invention consists primarily of a metal holder or supporting member 10, open at its top end. This supporting member is carried by a base 11 preferably of Wood and is secured thereto by screws 12 passing through lugs 13 formed on the supporting I member 10. Inasmuch as it is necessary that the top of the holder or I supporting member be in substantial alignment with the bolt C of the safe door, the thickness of the base 11 may be varied to properly position the holder 10. V
Secured to the under side of the base 11 is a metalplate 14 held in place preferably by screws 15. The base 11 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 16 stopping short of one end of the base as, indicated at 17. A transversely disposed groove 18 extends from the longitudinal groove 16 to one side of the base 11. l The plate 14 is provided with a corresponding longitudinally disposed slot 19 and a transversely disposed slot 20. The pair of grooves just described are adapted to cooperate with a pair of pins 21 tween the pair of lugs 24 there is pivotally mounted a fracturing bar25. This bar has :1. depending end 26 adaptedto rest within the slot 23. Connection between. the lugs 24 and the fracturing bar 25 is made by a. pin 27 .made preferably of soft metal.
The end of the fracturing bar 25 adjacent the door is provided with a head 28 forming one part of a clutch arrangement.
pair'of members 29 havinglaterally disposed projections 30. The members 29 are clamped upon the door bolt 0- by clamping bolts 31.
When the pair-of members 29 are in posi-' tion upon the door bolt C the projections 30 are in position to engage the head 28 on the fracturing bar 25, whereby a movement of the door will be imparted to the fracturing bar, to cause the device to function.
Into the holder 10 is adapted to be inserted a removable glass container 32. The glasscontaincr is for holding. a noxious liquid orgas whereby, upon fracture of the receptacle, the liquid or gas will be spilled or permitted to escape thereby making the vicinity of the safe untenable.
In order to mount the holder in position at the door of the safe, it is placed in position so that the pinf21 will enter the groove formed by the groove 16 of the base and the slot 19 of the plate. The holder is then moved in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 5), in a longitudinal direction until the pin 21 is disposed in the closed end 17 of the slot. The holder is then swung with the pin 21 as a pivot, thereby bringing the groove formed by the groove 18 and the slot 20 into position to engage the pin 22. With the pins inposition in the grooves the holder will be properly disposed at the door of the safe.
The glass receptacle 32 containing the noxious liquid or gas is then inserted'in the holder 10. The fracturing bar 25 is then mounted betweenthe lugs 24 and pivoted there-between by the pin 27. The depend ing end 26 is thus disposed in the slot 23 and contacts the upper end of the glass re ceptacle 32. The head 28 of'the fracturing bar is engaged by the projections 3Q of the pair of members29.
When aperson with authority opens the safe, the door bolt C will be moved longitudinally carrying with it the pair of members 29 to a position such as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this po'sitionthe projections 30 are out of engagement'with the head 28 of the fracturing bar, whereby the possibilityfof accidentally'moving the fractime bar to break the receptacle 32 is eliminated- Furthermore, because of" the piv- V otalfsuppol't'of the fracturing bar 25 when the safe has been opened, the inner end of the fracturing bar may be raised and the glasscontainer removed. v.l
When, however, the safe door is blown open or forced: in some other manner without having first properly moved the. door bolt G,thismovementofsthe door will cause a longitudinalpullgornthe, fracturing bar movable portion of the clutch comprisesa 25, by reason of the engagement of the clutching members 28-30. This movement of the fracturing bar'25wv'ill shear ofi the soft metal pin 27 and cause the depending end 26 to fracture the glass receptacle 32, thereby freeing its contents.
Thus, it will be seen that a structure-is provided which, upon legitimate uselof'the safe will be harmless and the danger of accidental fracture of the glass receptacle is minimized. On the other hand whenthe door of the safe or vault is. forced or illegitimately opened, theoperation of the device ispositively-assured. V f v 7 Furthermore, it should be noted that the base ofv the supporting member issov con-.. structed that the entire 5 device. may be quickly and easily removed without the 'ma ni ulation of screws, bolts or thelikej Wile the structure described and illus trated herein has proved to be an efficient one, -I-' do not wish to be unnecessarily limited and reserve the right to make such modifications as come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: 1
1. The combination with a safe provided with a door of a device of the class described, said device consisting of a holder, a recep-v tacle fornoxious fluidsadapted to be supported by said'holder, slidably engageable means whereby said holder may be removably secured to the baseof the safe, a fracturingbar for breakingsaid glassreoeptacle andmean's connecting said fracturing bar to said door, whereby saidconnection may be disconnected upon an authorized opening of the door of the safe. 7 f f 2. 'A device of the class described-in combination with a safe, said device comprising. a holder, afglass. container adapted to be mounted within said holder and containing a noxious fluid, a, fracturing bar supported 7 upon said holder, a clutching connection be tween the'door of thevsafe and said fracturing bar whereby upon an authorized opening of the 'door' the clutch will be disconnected and meansfor removably securing said holder to the floor ofthesafasaid means embodying a pairof pins projecting from the safe floor and a pair 0f'cooperating grooves provided on the bottom of said holder.
3. An arrangement of the class-describ'ed foruse in combination witha safe comprisinga metal holder, said holder beingadapted' to receive a glass containing a noxious (fluid, a woodenbase forsaid-holder, a metal plate secured to said wooden base-,saidbase and plate being formed with cooperating, slots,-.-a pair of pinsv projecting from-the bottom of said safe and adapted to enter. said slotsifor' removably securing said holder place,- withinthe safe, a pair of lugs; projecting from the upper edge of said holder, a fraefracturing bar and adapted to be engaged turing bar pivotall mounted between said by said laterally extending projections, lugs, one end of said fracturing bar engagwhereby when an unauthorized opening of 10 ing said glass container, a pair of members the safe door occurs, thefracturing bar will clamped to the door bolt of the safe door be moved to break said receptacle and free said members having laterally disposed proits contents. jections, a head formed on one end of said AUBREY M.
