THEFTPJROOF RECEIVER BOX,
Application filed December 7, 1921, Serial No. 520,506.
To all tti/"10m t muy concern:
Be it known that l, Louis VVrLnn, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Morsemere, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Theftproof Receiver Boxes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to receiver boxes particularly designed for household use and which are adapted to be placed in juxtaposition to an entrance to a house or apartment and to be automatically locked by a member or members engaging said door or cooperating with the door and the door frame, said receiver box'being adapted to receive articles delivered to the house or apartment, such for example, bottles of milk, cream and the like after which the closure member for such receiver box is moved into operative or locked position to prevent the removal of the articles placed in said receiver box until the door is opened; and the object of this invention is to provide akeyless receiverbox of the class described with one or more members adapted to be placed between the door and door frame for retaining` the receiver box in juxtaposition thereto, one of said members forming part of the lock mechanism for said container; a further object of the invention being to provide means whereby said member or members may be reversible on the container or used in different positions; a further object being to provide means for holding the closure member of the receiver box in an open position prior to placing articles in said receiver box; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a receiver box of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and eiiicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
rlhe invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that shown and described in Patent No. 1,384,317 dated July 12, 1921, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference 'characters in each of the views, and in which 1- igo 1 is a front View of my improved reN Renewed @ctober 5, 1923.
ceiver box with parts of the construction broken away and in section;
Fig. 2 a side view of the box as shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a plan view of the box shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and indicating the method of its use and with part of the construction broken away;
Fig. 4- a partial section on the line ll--t of Fig. 3;. and
Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
The receiver box shown and described herein is an improvement on that shown and tdescribed in the patent above referred to and the distinctive features of the present invention consist in the provision of two members for holding the receiver box in position, which members are located be tween the door and the door frame, the provision of spring means for supporting one of said members in its operative position, means for holding the closure member of the receiver box in an open position as well as tne form of the receiver box or one lower corner portion thereof.
ln the drawing l have shown at 10 a receiver box which is approximately rectan gular in form and one lower edge portion of the box, preferably at the front of the box., is cut away as shown at- 11 throughout the entire width of the box so as to permit of the placement of the receiver box in juxtaposition to the door and to pass over the usual door jamb.V
The closure member or cover 12 is hinged to one end of the box as shown at 13 and is provided approximately centrally thereof and adjacent to the front edge thereof with a spring-operated dog or catch device 1li adapted to operate in connection with an offset portion 15 in a lock rod 16 mounted transversely of the upper front portion of the receiver box, one end of the lock rod 16 projects through the receiver box and is provided with an arm 17 extending at right angles thereto, the end portion of said arm being L-shaped in form as shown at 18 and adapted to be located between the door frame 19 and door 2() as clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing.
At the opposite sides of the receiver box 10 adjacent to the front wall thereof are secured plates 21, the upper ends of which are provided with downwardly directed hookshaped portions 22, and spring members 23 are also secured to the sides of the receiver box and are provided with substantially hook-shaped end portions 24 adapted to pass through apertures in the plate 21 and side walls of the receiver box, and the outward movement of said spring members are limited by the hook-shaped end portions 22. rllhe spring members 23, or the end portions 24e thereof, are adapted to normally support the arm 17 of the lock rod 16 in its raised position, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, and by forcing the spring member 23 inwardly by hand said arm 17 as well as the L-shaped end 18 thereof, may be moved downwardly to rotate the lock rod 16 to move the same into inoperative position.
A suitable bail 25 is preferably provided whereby the receiver box may be conveniently carried about whenever desired. The front face or wall of the receiver box is provided at the top thereof with an inwardly directed extension 26, and slidably mounted in a keeper 27 is a catch d evice 28 provided at its outer end with a downwardly directed extension 29, and secured to said catch device is a pin 30 which passes through an elongated aperture in the keeper 27 and a corresponding aperture in one side wall of the closure member or cover 12 and projects therethrough as shown at 31 in Fig. 3 of the drawing, whereby the catch device 28 may be operated, and this device as shown in Fig. l serves to support the closure member 12 in an open position and prevents the accidental movement of said member into a closed position, and when the milkman or other party places articles in the receiver box, the catch device is moved into inoperative position, or moved backwardly to disengage thc projection 29 from the inwardly projecting portion 26 of the front wall of the receiver box, and said cover member may then be moved into a closed position.
The side walls of the receiver box are also preferably provided adjacent to the front lower corner portions thereof with apertures 32, and a lock arm or member 33 similar in form to the arm 17 and the portion 18 thereof, is adapted to be passed through one of the apertures 32 and retained in connection with the corresponding side portion of the receiver box by means of a wedge pin 3/1, and it will be understood that the member 33 is also adapted to be mounted beu tween the door frame 19 and door 20 in the same manner as the L-shaped portion 18 of the arm 17 and said member 33 may also be used at either side portion of the receiver box or, in other words, is reversible.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the lock rod 16 is reversed in the receiver box or the arm 17 with the L-shaped end 18 thereof may be located at either side of the receiver box and a cotter pin or the like 35 is passed through the lock rod 16 in juxtaposition to the inner face of one side wall of the receiver box preferably the end portion of said rod adjacent to the arm 17 for retaining the lock rod against displacement, and it will be understood that the member 33 which is similar in general form to the arm 17 or the end portion 18 thereof is also connected with the corresponding. side of the receiver box as clearly shown in F 1 of the drawing, and the receiver box is then placed in position for use with the Lshaped portion 18 of the lock rod 16 between the door frame 19 and door 20 as shown in Fig. 3 and with the member 33 in a similar position and with the closure mem ber or cover 12 in the position shown in Fig. d of the drawing, and when the milkman or other party has placed a bottle of milk, cream or the like, within the receiver box the catch device 28 is moved into inoperative position by grasping the projecting end 31 of the pin 30 and moving the same backi wardly, and by forcing the closure member 12 downwardly the dog 14; will pass over the offset angular portion 15 of the lock rod 16 and move into the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing to securely retain the closure member in a closed position. 1t wiil be understood that in the above position of the lock rod the same is supported by one of the spring members 23, and when the door 2O is opened the receiver box may be removed from its locked position, or out of engagement with the door frame and by pressing the spring member 23 inwardly by the hand, the arm 17 may be swung downwardly which operation will move the offset portion 15 of the lock rod 16 upwardly out of engagement with the catch device 14 to permit of the opening of the closure member 12 andthe removal of bottles of milk or` the like within the receiver box.
It will be understood that. I am not necessarily limited to the specific form and construction of the receiver box herein shown and described, nor to the use thereof herein set out, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
