To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, SAMUEL (1. Name, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Tllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in switch locks, and has for its object the provision in a switch lock of means for latching and locking the switch lever in position. 8
Another object is the provision in a switch lock of means for retaining the switch lever in latchedposition after the same has been unlocked. r 7
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which, 1 I

The approved form of construction, as
illustrated in the drawings comprises a base 6, upon which is mounted, and preferably made integral therewith, a standard 7 upon -which is mounted, and preferably made integral therewith, a guide post 32, thereby forming in the member 7 a slot 8. The central portion of the member 7 is reduced and the upper end 9 is enlarged for a purpose to be described hereinafter. Secured to the base 6 adjacent one side of the member 7 and centrally thereof is a standard 1.0, the upper end of which is reduced, as shown in Fig. 2 to form a guide member 11. Extending between the member 11. and the standard 7 is a rivet 12 by which two members 13 and 1 1 are pivotally mounted in position. The member 18 is provided with a tail piece 15, and an arm 16 at its upper end extending across the slot 8 in position to be engaged by the switch-operating lever 31 as such lever is moved downwardly into the slot 8. The device is intended for locking the lever and switch in position, so that when the switch is either opened or closed, the same may not be removed to another posiion without releasing the switch lever 31 from engagement in the groove 8. When the device is in operative position so as to receive the switch lever 31, the various parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. Upon the lever 31 striking the member 16, the member 13 is moved upon the pivot 12, so that the car 17 passes beneath'the curved end 22 of the locking-arm 21. As the lever 81 proceeds downwardly it engages the edge of the member 14: for swinging such member in counter-clockwise direction in Fig. 1. Upon this movement of the member 14:, the end 18 disengages from the member 21 and allows the same to fall into engagement with the curved portion of the member 13 at the right of the ear 17 as seen in Fig. 1. When the lever 31 in its downward move ment into the slot 8 clears the member 16, the member 13 again swings on its pivot, bringing the car 17 back of the turned end of the member 21 into the position shown in Fig. 3, in which position of the parts the member 13 is held againstswinging, serving thus to 1001: the lever 31 in the slot 8.
Mounted upon the portion 9 of the member 7 is housing 27 which is adapted to en close the arm 2'1 and the ear 17 of the mem-.
ber 13 so that these parts cannot be reached from the outside of the housing- Mounted upon'the member 9 and projecting through the housing 27 is a barrel 28, the end of which is provided with a slot 26, in which a key maybe inserted. The interior of the barrel 28 may be provided with suitable tumblers so that a specially designed key will be necessary to operate the device. Upon inserting the key into the barrel 28 and turning the portion in which the slot 26 appears, a tongue 29 is brought into engagement with the under surface of the member arm 16 toward the right in saidFig. 3, this being accomplished readily by an upward pull on the tail piece 15.
My device is designed to be bolted tothe cross ties of a track and the base 6 may be formed large enough to allow for a firm mounting of the device adjacent the rail.
In order to prevent the member 18 from moving downwardly too great a distance so asto move the member 16 out otthe path of the lever 31, a stop block 30 is mounted upon the member 13 in position to engage the standard 7. Also, as shown in Fig. 3, the guide post is formed with the upper end 33 curved or beveled to permita ready reception of the member 31 into the slot 8.
l/Vhile Ihave illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations andinodifications as come within the scope.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A switchlock comprising a supporting member; a guide member mounted adjacent to and spaced from said supporting -mem-.
her; a latch pivotally mounted on said sup porting member; a locking member adapted,
when in operative position, to engage said latch; and means projectinginto the space separating said supportingmember and said guide member for retaining said locking member in iii-operative position, substantially as described.
2. A switch lock comprising, a supporting member; a guide member mounted adjacent to and spaced from said supporting member; forming a passage between said supporting member and said guide member; a latch pivotally mounted on said member, one end of said latch projecting into said passage; a locking member pivotally mounted on said supporting member andfadapted in one position for locking said latch in said projecting position; and a member for retaining said locking member in in-operative position, one end of said member projecting into said passage, substantially as described.
3. A switch lock comprising a supporting member; a guide member mounted adjacent to and spaced from said supporting member, forming a passage between said supporting member and said guide member; a latch pivotally mounted on said supporting member, one end of said latch projecting into said passage; a locking member pivotally mounted on said supporting member and adapted in one position for locking said latch in said projecting position; and a member pivotally mounted on said supporting member for retaining said locking memher in in-operative position, one end of said last mentioned member being normally held by gravity projecting into said passage, sub stantially as described.

A switch lock comprising a supporting member; a vertically extending guide member mounted adjacent to and spaced from said supporting member, provided with a passage between said supporting member and said guide member; meansmounted on said supporting member for latching a switch lever in said passage; locking means in the form of a latch for holding. saidfi'rst named latchingmeans in retaining position, means operable by a key for releasing said locking means, and automatically acting means for holding said lockingmeans re leasably out of operative position, substantially as descrlbed.
5. A device of the class described, comprising astandard provided with an upj wardly opening notch adapted to receive a lever therein; a pivoted latch weigh-ted at one side for holding it normally in position above said notch, being adapted to. be displaced downwardly for permitting the lever to pass; a stop on the weighted end of said latch for preventing upward movement of the latch from its normal position away from said notch,-whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against withdrawal;
an ear on said latch; and a gravity operable latch engaging'said ear for locking said latch against downward movement, substantially as described.
6. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with. an upwardly opening notch adapted to receive a lever therein; a latch extending normally into position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly forpermitting the lever to pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch from its normal position away from said notch whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against withdrawal; and a pivoted latch operable by gravity for holding said first named latch against downward movement toward the notch, substantially asdescribed.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with an upinto position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly for permitting the leverto pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch from its normal position away from said notch whereby the latch serve to hold the lever against withdrawal; a second pivoted latch opcrable by gravity adapted by engagement with said first named latch to hold said first named latch against downward movement toward the notch; and means adjacent said first named latch for holding releasably said second latch out of operative engagement with said first named latch substantially as described.
8. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with an upwardly opening notch, a movable member adapted to engage said notch; a latch extending normally into position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly for permitting the movable member to pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch from its normal position away from said notch whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against withdrawal; a second latch adapted by engagement with said first named latch to hold said first named latch against downward movement toward said notch; releasable mean for holding said second latch out of operative engagement with said first named latch; and means actuated by the movement of said movable member into said notch for throwing said releasable means out of operation for permitting said second latch to engage said first named latch, substantially as described.
9. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with an upwardly opening notch adapted to receive -a lever therein; a latch extending normally into position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly for permitting the lever to pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch from its normal position away from said notch whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against withdrawal; a second pivoted latch operable by gravity adapted by engagement with said first named latch to hold said first named latch against downward movement toward said notch; a pivotally mounted member adapted in one position to hold said second latch out of operative engagement with said first named. latch; and means adapted normally to hold said pivotally mounted member in position for supporting said second latch out of operative position, substantially as described.
10. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with an upwardly opening notch adapted to receive a lever therein; a latch extending normally into position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly for permitting the lever to pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch froniits normal' position away from said notch whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against first named latch to hold said first named latch. against downward movement toward said notch; a pivotally mounted member adapted in one position to hold said second latch out of" operative engagement withsaid first named latch; and a depending arm adapted by gravity to hold said pivotally mounted member yieldingly in position for supporting said second latch out of operative position, substantially as described.
11. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with an up-, wardly opening notch; a movable member adapted to engage said notch; "a latch extending normally into position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly for permitting the lever to pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch from its normal position away from said notch whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against withdrawal; a second latch adapted by engagement with said first named latch to holdsaid first named latch against downward movement toward said notch; a pivotally mounted member adapted in one position to hold said second latch out of operative engagement with said first named latch; and means adapted normally to hold said pivotally mounted memher in position for supporting said second latch out of operative position and actuated by the movement of the movable member into said notch for throwing said pivotally mounted means out of operation for permitting said second latch to engage said first named latch, substantially as described.
12. A device of the class described, comprising a standard provided with an upwardly opening notch adapted to receive a lever therein; a latch extending normally into position above said notch and adapted to be displaced downwardly for'permitting the lever to pass; means for preventing upward movement of said latch from its normal position away from said notch whereby the latch serves to hold the lever against withdrawal; a second latch adapted by engagement with said first named latch to hold said first named latch against downward. movement toward said notch; a pivotally mounted member adapted in one position to hold said second lat-ch out of operative engagement with said first named latch; and a depending arm adapted by gravity to hold said pivotally mounted member in position for supporting said second latch out of operative position and adapted by engagement with said lever in its movement into said notch to throw said pivotally mounted memwardly for permitting the lever to pass;
