.throwing the same intoeither a locked or unlocked position as desired. iVhen the key is turned to Withdraw the bit 10 from the bit receiving notch 9 of the locking bolt, preparatory to .withdrawing the key from the lock, the tumbler 14 is forced downwardly into operative :position by the spring 18 and engages one o the notches 12 or '13, the former if the bolt has been thrown into an operative position and the latter if the bolt has been retracted into an inoperative position.
A further essential feature of the inven. tion resides in the provision of a sliding de: tent 24 which is'connectcd by a shank 25 to -a'plate 26 upon the exterior of the lock, the saidshank 25 operatingwithin a slot 27 in the back of the casing. This plate 2,6 is
slightly smaller in size "than the back of the lock and has substantially the same shape as the lock itself so as to be inconspieuous-in appearance and attract no attention from an unauthorized person unfamiliar with the lock Vand trying to open salue. lVhcn this plate. 26 is moved into a position foncentric with the easing 1 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the locking detent 24k is moved over the swinging end of thc tnmbler 145s()- as to hold the saine firmly m engagement with Ithe locking bolt and prevent it frombeing lifted into `an inoperative position either by meansl of the key itselfor any other implement which alight be utilized ln an effort toA pick the lock.v However, when the' plate A2G islmoved to one-side as indicated .the dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4,
the sliding' detent 24 is drawn beyondI the end 'ofthe' tumbler 14 so as' not to interfere withtlie'swingingmovement thereof. lt
will Vthusbe obviousI that in order to open 4vthe padlock the'operator must first move theplate26at the back thereofe to one side,
scenes and then -insert the key through the key hole opening 22 and turn the same in the usual mannerso that the bit thereof will raise the tumbler and slide the bolt.
Having thus described the invention what I elailn as new and desire to secure by L etters Patent is:
1. In a padlock, the combination of a cas ing having a slot therein, a shackle, a locking mechanism within the casing for coperation'with the shackle, a movable detent' :tor holding the locking mechanislnagainst operation, a plate upon the exterior of the ca'sing,.and a shank connecting the plate and the detent and slidable Within the before mentioned slot to move the detent into and out of operative position.
2. In a padlock, the combination of a casing, having a slot therein, a shackle, a loeking bolt slidably mounted within the casing and adapted to engage the shackle to hold it in a closed position, atumbler pivotally mounted withinv the easing and constructed at its swinging end to engage the locking bolt, a slide mounted upon the exterior of the casing, a stem'connccted to the slide and passing loosely through the before mentioned slot in the casing, and a detent car'- ricd by the stem and adapted to be moved over the swinging end of the tumbler to l10ld the said tumbler in engagement with the locking bolt.
ln a padlock, the combination of a eas- Ying having a slottherein, a shackle, a locking bolt slidably mounted Within the easing and'adapted to engage the shackle to hold it in a closed position, the said locking' bolt being formed with a bitreeeiving notch, a
tumbler pivotally mounted Within the casing and constructed at its swinging end to engage the locking bolt, the said tumbler lot`- ing also formed with a tang which normally extends across thc before mentioned bit receiving notch of the llocking bolt, a'key ii'ormed with ,n.-bit adapted to enter the bit receiving noth-,t'if the locking bolt to move the swinging endoi thel tumbler into an in-l operative positionA and 4throw the locking bolt, a plate slidably mountcdupon the exvterior et the easing, a stem projmzting'from the plate and passing loosely through the 1 slot in the casing, and a iletent. carried by the stem and adapted to be moved over the i swinging end ot' the tlnnl'ilerjto retain the tumbler in a 'positive engz'igemeht with the locking bolt. 4 y
4. Ina. padlock, the combination of a cas'- ing formed with an internal partition and also with a rib projecting inwardly therefrom, a shackle having one arm thereof. extendedl and passing slidably through theinterual wall, a locking bolt slidablyl mounted within the casing and adapted to engage'the extended arm o1 the shackle .to hold the shackle in n closed poSiiion, one end of the side of the casing provided with the rib, a'nd 10 locking bolt sliding upon the before menn. key for operating the locking bolt. tioned internal partition while the opposite In testimony whereof I affix my signature end is groovcd to revei've the before nienin presence of two witnesses.
