Locks of this kind, as'rnade hitherto, are of relatively complicated construction which oflsets the advantage ohtainied by the elimination of separate locking device; furthermore, doors equipped with these locks cannot beshut by mere pushing-or slamming likedoors with ordinarylocksgand it 13 necessary to fully depress "the handle to lock the door from either side.
In the present lock these-detects are elim inated. Its construction is simple and permits the use of a'latch bolt having the: usual inclined surface, and'which will be pushed back and snap into place wheir the door: is pushed or: slammed shut.
Unlike some of the locks of this'type, the present lock has only one latch bolt which moves lengthwise in the usual manner. The moving of an inner 'arin by meansot a handle against a hookrigidly'secured to theilatch bolt will, in" every case, cause. the latter to move back, while the outer arm will move the latch bolt back in a similar a manner only in case a second hookpivoted I as seen from' the outside, with. .the outer:

Each disk has a rearward projection 27 against which bear springs 28, 29 respectively which hold the projections 27 from below against a stop 30 when the lock is at rest.

A spring 10 urges pawl 38 against the portion 37 of slide 32. The slide itself is urged down by a spring 11.
hen the outer handle 25 is depressed and the disk 23, which is connected to the handle, is thereby turned and the arm 21 swung back, the latter will engage hook 10 and the latch bolt will be withdrawn against the action of spring 12 engaging the latch bolt at its outer end. 1V hen the handle is released, the latch bolt will move back to its former position. During these operations the lifting slide 82 and the pivoted hook 16 have not been moved out of the lower position shown in Figure 1 which is the position at rest.
lVhen the inner disk 22 is rotated by means of the inner handle, arm 20 will en gage the rigid hook 10 of the latch bolt and cause the latch bolt to move back; simultaneously the lug 81 will lift the slide 32 as shown in Figure 2. The lug 36 will cause the pivoted hook 16 to swing upward and the pawl 38, which previously had been swung toward the front end of the lock, will snap over the edge of portion 37.
After the.do0r has been shut and the inner handle is released, the end portion of the latch bolt 4 will enter the rectangular opening 13 in the locking plate 4% of the door frame. The locking plate as. however, has no opening in alignment with the lug 13 and the advance of the latch bolt is limited by the engagement of lug 13 with locking plate In case the inner handle is rOiCLiSGtl while the door is open, the latch bolt will project somewhat further beyond the end plate :3, there being nothing in the path 01'' lug 1 This will cause a release projection at the upper edge of hook 16 to force pawl 38 out of its locking position, as shown in Figure 8, whereby the slide 32 is released and allowed to drop down with the hook 16 under the action of the spring.
As may easily be seen the door cannot be opened by means of the outer handle after it has been shut and the latch bolt been pulled back by means of the inner handle until the inner handle has again been operated. In order to indicate this locked condition to persons inside and outside the door, an indicator plate 17 is provided on each side, extending behind cover plates -11) and having a vertical movement. Each plate 1-7 is provided with a horizontal extension 1-8 secured in a rectangular opening l9 in portion 37 of slide 32 and extending through suitable slots in the door and the walls 1 and 2 of the housing. The indicator plates thus move up and down in unison with the slide 32 and alternately display the words open and vacant through a suitable opening in cover plates 46.
To permit, in certain exceptional cases, opening of the door from the outside after it has been locked from the inside, the hub portion 39 of the pawl 38 may be provided with a square hole so that the pawl can he swung out of its locking position by 1110:131 of a square key inserted into this hole. Paul 38 is preferably provided with an arm limiting the rotation of the pawl when the latter is turned by means of a key.
The inclined surface at the forward end of the latch bolt is provided on the outer side of the bolt, as required Ior doors opening inwardly. On doors opening outwardly this inclined surface must, of course, TiH't inwardly. The inclined surface permits of shutting the door by merely pushing or slamming it, without requiring the dcprc sion of a handle. When the door has been shut in this manner, either from the inside or the outside, the outer handle is not rendered inoperative. This will only be the case when the inner handle has been depressed.
lVhile I have herein described and illustrated one practical embodiment of my present improvements, it is nevertheless, to be understood that the essential features thereof might also be incorporated in various other alternative structures, and I therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several elements as may be fairly considered within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Claims:
1. In a lock, inner and outer independently rotatable handles, a lock b lt having a rearw rd extension, a part movably connected at one oi its ends with the bolt, memiiXed to each or" the handles and co operating respectively wi h said bolt exte sion and with said part whereby, upon the rotation of one of said handles the lock bolt is retracted, a'slidable member cooperating with said part, and said bolt retract ing member on the latter handle having part cooperating with said slidable member when the bolt is retracted to actuate the same and move said movable part on the latch bolt out of the path or" movement of the member on the other loch handle.

In a lock, inner and outer independently rotatable handles, a lock bolt, a part pivotally mounted at one or its ends upon the lock Jolt and having its other end normally positioned in parallel relation with the belt at one side thereof, an actuating arm lined to each handle member and adapted to coo mate with the bolt and with said part respectively to retract the bolt, a member sli-dably mounted in the lock case and supporting said pivoted part in its normal position, and said handle having the arm engaging the bolt being further providedwith ans for actuating said slidable member as the bolt is retracted to move said pivoted part out of the path of movement of the actuating arm on the other h lie 2. and means for releasably retaining the sli-dable member in the latter position.

In a lock, inner and outer independently rotatable handles, a lock bolt, a part pivotally mounted at one of its ends upon the lock bolt and having its other end normally positioned in parallel relation with the belt at one side thereof, an actuating arm fined to each handle member and adapted to cooperate with the boltand with said part respectively to retract the bolt, a member slidably mounted in the lock case and sup portingaid pivoted in its normal posi tion, and saio handle having the arm the bolt being further provided with means for t- ,tuating said slidable member the bolt is retracted to move said pivoted part out of the path of movement of the actuating arm on the other handle member, a pivoted pawl mounted in the lock case and cooperating with said slide to retain the sam in the latter position, and said pivoted parton the lock bolt having means to engage said pawl and release the slide in the movement of the lock bolt to its fully projected position.

8. la a lock, inner and outer independently rotatable handles, a lock bolt, a part pivotally mounted at one of its ends upon the lock bolt and having its other end normally positioned in parallel relation with the bolt atone side thereof, an actuating arm fixed to each handle member and adapted to cooperate with the bolt and with said part respectively to retract the bolt, a member slidably mounted in the lock ease and supporting said pivoted part in its normal position, and said handle having the arm engaging the bolt being further provided with means for actuating said slidable member as the bolt is retracted to move said pivoted part out of the path of movement of the actuating arm on the other handle member, said bolt having a lug thereon to engage a strike plate when the door is closed and limiting the projecting movement of the bolt, :1 pivoted pawl mounted in the loci: case and cooperating with said slide to retain the same in the latter position, and said pivoted part on the lock bolt having means to engage said pawl and release the slide in the movement of the lock bolt to its fully projected position, said pawl having means whereby the same may be manually operated independently of the lock bolt to release the slide, and indicating means carried by and movable with said slide and visible from the opposite sides of the lock case.
