IMPROVEMENT IN THE MODES OF CONNECTING PITMEN WITH SHAFTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,616, dated September 9, 1873; application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, RUDOLPH GLEAVE- LAND, of Oovington, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Operating the Dashers of Ghurns, or for other analogous purposes; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
I will illustrate my invention by describing it in conncctionwith a churn.
' Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of a churn taken through the line 60 m of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a bar for connecting the churnshaft with the shaft of a driving power.
The invention consists in the mode of relatively constructing abarand hand crank shaft, so that other power than that of the hand may be employed to operate, in the manner hereinafter described.
AB represent a churn-body having a socket or pivot, O, to receive the lower end ofa dashershaft, D E, and a cover, F, made in two unequal parts hinged to each other. To the upper end of the shaft D is detachably attached a bevel-gear wheel, G, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of the bevel-gear wheel H attached to the horizontal shaft I. One journal of the shaft I revolves in a hole in the upper end of a bar, J, attached to the churn-body A,
and its other journal revolves in a notch in the upper end of a similar bar, K, attached to the opposite side of said churn-body, where it is held in place by a spring-catch, L, also attached to said churn-body. One end of the shaft I projects, is flattened, and has a longitudinal slot formed in it, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. M is a crank, in which is formed a slot to receive the flattened end of the shaft I, so that the churn may be operated by handpower when desired. N is a bar, in one end of which is formed a slot to receive the flattened end of the shaft 1, when it is secured in place by-a spring catch pin, 0, as shown in Fig. 3. The other end of the bar N is slotted to receive the end of the shaft of the driving power, where it is secured in place by a bolt and nut, P.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bar N slotted at both ends, in combination with spring catch-pin O and end-slotted end-flattened shaft I, to enable power to be applied to the latter, as described.
