Description

MEANS FOR OPERATING GHURNS.
No. 419,985. Patented Jan. 21, 1890.
N PETERS. Phnlc-htbognphor. Washinglon. D. Cv
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED R. BASSETT, OF PAW PAW, MICHIGAN.
MEANS FOR OPERATING CHURNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,985, dated January 21, 1890. Application filed June 12, 1889. Serial No. 314,076. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED R. BAssETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paw Paw, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Operating Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for operating churns, in which a double lever or bent-bow lever acts in conjunction with cranks which are securely fastened to a revolving churn; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide facilities for revolving the churn by hand, and, second, to do away with the hand-crank or stooping position while churning. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the levers in c011- nection with the box of a churn; Fig. 2,a front view of the bow or levers.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the specification.
The legs B B and standards 0 C, connected with the cross-bar D, constitute the framework or support for the box and levers. The shape of the levers H is square and bent at its middle in the form of an inverted U, forming a double lever, as shown in Fig. 2 of my drawings. This lever H is held in position at its ends by the bolts J J, connected to the legs 13 B in such a manner that the upper nected to the levers H by the bolts I I at one end, while the opposite ends of the pitmanrods connect loosely to the outer ends of the cranks E E. The cranks E E are securely fastened to the box F, and revolve in the ends of the standards 0 C, as shown at Fig. 1 of my drawings. Thus it will be plainly seen that by a forward-and-backward motion of the levers H the box F is forced to revolve, while the legsB B stand squarely and permanently upon the floor.
I am aware that prior to my invention churns have been made having a revolving action; also, that levers have been made by which to revolve machinery. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the double or bentbow lever H, loosely fastened at its lower ends to the legs B B, pitman-rods Gt, connected to said bow-lever at I and to the cranks E, and the cranks E, secured to the box F and revolving in the standards 0, substantially and for the purpose set forth.
