CHURNING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,487, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed June 4, 1885. SeriulNo.167,693. (ModeLl T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FOUNTAINE LEwIs FonsHEn, of Batesville, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Churning Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device for working the dashers of churns.
The invention consists in'particular constructions and combinations of parts of the device, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of-my improved device and a vertical transverse section of a churn-body in which the dasher operates, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lever.
The letter A indicates a post or standard, which is fixed to a base, B, and has attached to it the two laterally-projecting rods or arms 0 D, which, as shown, have screw-threaded ends passing through post A, and receive nuts 0 c d d at opposite faces of the post. At their outer ends the rods 0 D have semicircular heads 0 D, respectively, which form bearings or half-bearings for the shaft E of the dasher F, said shaft having reduced portions formed by peripheral grooves e 0, turned in the shaft, into which grooves the heads 0 D of rods 0 D fit loosely.
The letter I indicates the churn-body in which the dasher works, the body having a cover, i, through a central aperture of which the dasher-shaft passes, and any suitable stopblocks, as at J, may be fixed to the base B around the churn-body,to center it and steady it in proper position relatively to the dasher and its shaft.
I show the dasher F made with opposite parallel limbs, f f, connected by an arched head-piece, f, to which the shaft E is fixed; but the dasher may have any preferred construction insuring a violent agitation of the cream in the body I when the dasher is rotated therein.
For operating the dasher I employ a lever, K, having a handle, k, formed at one end and branching out at a little distance from the handle into two parallel side arms, It If, having holes 10 through which a pin or bolt, L, may be passed to pivot the lever to the post A, which stands between the arms is W, and the arms are bent laterally to form oppositely-ac tending portions 70 the arm 7c having attached to its end a buckle, M, and the arm k having at its end a hole, a, into which a rivet or screw, n, may be passed for holding one end of a strap, N, to it. After the dasher F is adjusted in the churn-body I and the body is set to adjust the dasher-shaft E in its bearings G D the strap N will be given a couple of turns around the central concaved portion of the shaft, and then will be fastened in the buckle M, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
It is evident that by rocking the leverK up and down on its pivot L, the dasher-shaft F will be rotated quickly in reverse directlons, and will thoroughly agitate the cream in the churn body and bring the butter quickly, the application of the power by the lever and strap being very direct and effective, so that the device may be worked with little fatigue to the operator.
WVhen the churning is finished, the strap N will be unbuckled and unwound from the shaft E, and no dangling straps will remain 011 the dasher to interfere with its quick and thorough cleansing.
All parts of the device are simple and durable, and may be made at small cost, and so as to be knocked down for shipment in small space and readily set up by any one for use when required.
I am aware that churn-powers have heretofore been constructed of a pivoted lever, a band connected at its ends to the same and passed at its middle part around a dasher shaft held in open bearingsat the outer ends of horizontal arms, and I do not claim such, broadly, as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A churning device consisting of the base B, the vertical standard A, the upper and lower horizontal rods, 0 D, having semicir cular heads 0 D, and nuts 0 c d d, securing arms kk and passed around the dasher-shaft said rods on the standard, the vertically-movat its middle portion, said parts being com ing forked lever K, having handle k, side bined substantially as set forth.
arms, k 70 embracing the standard, the pivot- FOUNTAIN E LEWIS FOUSHEE. bolt L, the dasher-shaft E, having peripheral W'itnesses: grooves e e for the heads 0 D, and the strap REOHERD H. LEE, N, connected at its ends to the ends of the ALBERT P. FERRILL.
